I hate the fact that the XBOX 360 is american, but the console is so well round up.
The XB360 is the ONLY console in 24 years of my life that has had regualr issues and crashes, and disk read errors. It is the most overrated £300 I have ever spent my money on. Do I hate the XB360, no, I'm glad I have one so I can play PGR3, TD:U and pretty soon Pro Evo 6 and Forza 2, however it is not what I would consider a step up from the PS2 overall, rather I consider it in some ways to be a step backwards. The graphics have imrpoved, that's all well and good but the gameplay hasn't budged an inch, and the console is bugged to hell. Take PGR3 for instance, great game, looks great, good online but what does PGR3 have that honeslty makes it notably better than PGR2 other than the graphics? Nothing, it could be the same damn game. Like I said, I'm happy I have an XB360, but it £300 was a hell of a lot of cash for me, I wouldn't be, I'd be very dissapointed. And you talk like the 360 is gods gift to home entertainment.

When was your 360 built? It should say on the back of it. If it was built in '05, you can ship it to Microsoft and have them repair it/replace it.

I wouldn't be knocking on GoW for that. Fall of Man has the same frames per second rate, you know.

Actually, Resistance runs at a steady 30fps, Gears of War has significant drop by comparison, around 15fps very often, as I've seen from videos and reports.

Built and bought this year, there's a lot of people with problems with their 06 360's ontop of all thoes problems with the 05 ones. Bottom line is I've never had (by I've I actually mean both me and my brother since we both bought different consoles as kids when we lived with the folks) a console as faulty as the 360 and I've had plenty of consoles from launch or not long after launch inluding the Atari Jaguar.

TGS 2006: Pricey PS3 Games?
Expensive games could accompany a shift in business plans over at Sony.
by Anoop Gantayat
September 23, 2006 - Following up on Ken Kutaragi's pre-TGS keynote address, Japanese site Impress Watch has posted the latest in its "Random Tracking" editorial series. This periodic feature is written by Munechika Nishida, a well-known contributor to the Asahi Shimbun newspaper and Ultra One PC magazine, and this latest update has some surprising revelations on the PS3.

To most gamers, the most eye-catching part of the feature is a claim about game prices. Citing "multiple information sources," the article states that the price of PS3 games will be concentrated in the 8,800 to 9,800 yen range. The primary reason given is the rising cost of development.

In Japan, the standard price of a PS2 game is 6,800 yen, with only the biggest titles like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy rising to the 8,800 yen mark.

There's a deeper story to this price hike. According to the article, Sony was, as of E3, planning to alleviate cost pressures on 3rd parties by lowering royalty costs. The thinking at the time was that users would be able to create their own games and distribute them online throught he PS3, and Sony would not be able to charge royalties for such titles. The company would want to offer 3rd parties a similar pricing environment, with the savings from royalty costs passed on to consumers in the form of lower software prices.

However, this strategy has apparently been put on hold as Sony has been unable to complete preparations for turning the PS3 into an open platform. The article claims that Sony has made no progress in the preparations for allowing users to make their own games. Such preparations include a development environment, manuals, security management and community features.

It should come as no surprise that preparations have been delayed, as the article also claims that even support for 3rd party developers is lagging.

With the delay in progress towards an open platform, the site speculates that Sony is switching to a more traditional business model where the PS3 will be sold at a "surprisingly low price" and losses will be recouped on software royalties. This is the business model that was used for the PlayStation and PlayStation 2.

As part of this strategy shift, we could be seeing changes to Sony's plans for multiple PS3 SKUs. The article claims that while the 60 gigabyte PS3 will still be available, the company's focus will be shifted to the 20 gigabyte model. This is part of Sony's hope to change from a multi SKU business model to a single SKU model. The article cites as a source software distribution firms which noticed, at the end of August, a change in Sony's marketing approach for the PS3.

Some big revelations to be sure. We should be able to get a grasp on how accurate Nishida's sources were as PS3 pricing and shipment details become available in the coming weeks.

EDIT: Also, found a ton of boxart for various games.

^^^ You should just stick with a TV that does 720p actually. 1080i isn't worth it, and the price premium you'll probably pay in Brazil isn't worth it either, esp since you won't really notice a difference until you hit a TV larger than around 55".

I say just find a nice TV that does 720p and call it a day, 1080i might be a bonus, but it's not necessary.

oh ok thanx, good to know that. 👍

Hey duck....IGN is stupid but....that's the same price that 360 games retail for in Japan IIRC....

Well, I was thinking of excluding all the crap that was bolded, but then someone would come along and post the same article.

I posted it up because of the possibility of the 20GB model being the main model in the future.

I am just talking about the type of games & style. Not about the hardware.

If you're not happy, Add Mr Deap to ignore list.

Though it's hard in a way, cause sometime I post goodies. :sly:

Jeez. You must be on a low sodium diet (you know...without a grain of salt. :D). I'm kidding.

The wrong strategy of Sony is they launch the PS3 in Japan first.

Though, I bet it's to hurry the launch or they'll get eaten by MS.(Everyone know MS target SONY)
To more-or-less quote EA "they can sell it for $20 with a ham sandwich taped to it and we would still outsell it." Microsoft could give away 360's in Japan and they still wouldn't be able to get rid of them. The situation of the 360 in Japan is worse than the original XBox was. Hell, it is worse than the Sega Saturn was in America.

I am not surprised if 20GB becomes more popular in the future since many people are leaning toward the 20G version now. To be honest, 20G comes with HDMI is one of the best news I've heard.👍

What is the most popular PC OS in Japan, anyway? Windows?

GamePro Q&A: 5 Questions for Phil Harrison
Sep 24, 2006 @ 9:18pm

Summary:
GamePro editor Vicious Sid got an opportunity to speak with Sony executive Phil Harrison during Sony Computer Entertainment's Tokyo Game Show first-party PlayStation 3 preview.

Full Text:
GamePro: The PlayStation 3 games on display at TGS look great. There's been quite an improvement over the last few months.
Phil Harrison:

We knew it was a risk going 'radio silent' after E3, which is always part of our strategy. E3 was great, obviously, but saying nothing until today put a great deal of pressure on the titles here to really sing. I think they've more than done that.

But, we've got a long way to go. I don't want anyone to walk out of here thinking that these games are "it." We're still tuning, improving, tweaking performance.

GP: We were intrigued to see how many games have 1080p support, and to hear focus so much on talking about 1080p. Is that a real commitment from Sony to 1080p for the future?

PH: The PlayStation 3 is the only format that can do full HD, true HD. So it's obviously to our advantage to take advantage of that...where appropriate. And it doesn't require that every game be 1080p, because I think that some games actually look better at 720p depending on the style of the game, depending on the pixel rendering or pixel shading that's been adopted.

But I was being a little bit cheeky [discussing 1080p so much during the event] because one of our friendly competitors made a very bold statement, saying that that there's no way that we will be able to do [1080p] at launch. So we thought it was appropriate to, rather than get all emotional about it, just give it [1080p] a nudge.

GP: What does Sony have, as a company, that Microsoft doesn't?

[short pause]

PH: You know, we have had....I'm going to answer your question! But we've had a couple of accusations of sounding arrogant. So I've been very careful about answering that question.

One of the things that we do have, and we would never rely upon it, but we do have 200 million plus PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 sales worldwide. And that gives us a very loyal fan base, who we could never upset and never take advantage of, but it gives us some fans who love what we do, and push us really hard to do the best that we can do. And they have been pushing us. I read the forums, and the newsgroups

-- possibly some of the same ones that you read. And we've had some justifiable criticisms, and I won't try to defend that.

But what we do have is that ultimate fan base of people who want us to do a good job. So that's actually quite important. We've also got industry support, we've got worldwide studios as you've seen today, who are doing some incredible stuff and really leading the charge in making the PlayStation 3 shine as much as it can. And that makes a difference.
There was an interesting report issued a couple of days ago by Merryll Lynch which observed that Sony Computer Entertainment's internal development resources are as large as Microsoft's and Nintendo's combined. Obviously I know what our numbers are, but I didn't know where the [competitors] were at. So that's a tremendous power that we have. We have 14 studios worldwide and about 2200 people at last count, and all of those studios share common technology, common tools, and that really helps.

From a product point of view, I think you saw earlier on when I did a quick whiz across the "cross media bar," that we've got some really consumer-friendly functionality built into the console, before you even buy a game. "Do I want PlayStation 3 to be my digital...life center?" You know what I mean. And I think that there are more things in PlayStation 3 that give people who buy it more reason to use it more often. Not very eloquent, but you understand.

What else do we have? Ken Kutaragi! We have somebody who is visionary and equally brutal in his demands that we achieve that vision. Which is...sometimes a challenge, but never a dull moment, you know?

GP: Speaking of Ken Kutaragi, he was quoted in an interview with PC Watch magazine a few months ago speaking about possible hardware upgrades for the PS3, such as a better video card, maybe more RAM or a Blu-ray burner? Is that a direction that Sony is interested in pursuing with the PS3, making it more of a consumer personal computer?

PH: Definitely from a software point of view, PlayStation 3 will grow over time, just as we've made upgrades available for the PSP to add functionality. I can't comment on the hardware strategy, but whatever we do, if we do it, when we do it, the key thing is going to be maintaining the existing library of games. So, nobody need worry that they're going to be left behind.

[Time's up: Harrison's assistant asks me to wrap up the interview. But, in an amusing twist, Harrison takes a keen interest in what he calls "the questions reporters don't ask." He actually slides this reporter's notebook across the table and begins skimming over its contents!

Luckily, Harrison grants me one more question, and it's a doozy, one that GamePro community members echo again and again in our forums.]

GP: What do you say to gamers who don't care about Blu-ray movies but would rather have a cheaper console?

PH: That's a great question. I can understand that. There's this sort of misunderstanding that the Blu-ray disc player for movies is somehow burdening the console with unnecessary cost. That is completely not true. We put our Blu-ray Disc functionality in the console purely from a game design point of view. Once we had that storage capacity on Blu-ray Disc, adding the movie playback functionality was extremely cost-effective, [the cost] is actually non-existent.

So games like Resistance which, as a launch title, is up to 20-something gigabytes already. And that's day one -- think about four years, six years from now. We'll be pushing the 50 gigabyte limit with dual-layer Blu-ray very quickly. So we absolutely need it as game designers, and in that regard, the consumer is getting the movie functionality effectively for free.

[Final thoughts on the interview: Harrison is an extremely charming guy (and tall, at six feet seven inches!). I liked him immediately. In contrast to his somewhat stiff public speaking style, he's very sharp, straightforward, and engaging in a one-on-one conversation. It was a great interview, and he's clearly a key asset for Sony Computer Entertainment.]

Propaganda, Go!
That article is crap. It completely neglects the fact that Microsoft lost (and loses) money on every single XBox and 360 sold, not to mention the silly amount of money selling games for $60 gets them in return. And MS selling 10 million 360's by December is a pipe dream cranked out by Moore. Companies losing money on hardware has been a prevalent problem since the Saturn days.
And what the hell is this:

Without an exclusive there, Microsoft and Nintendo would gain the edge in game sales, since their games cost less than Sony's.
Sony at least has a reason to charge $60 for the games. Microsoft doesn't.

And this is rediculous:

When things are all said and done, the most valuable piece of the pie at Sony is its video game division. They could very well put it up for sale. And who could be the potential buyer?

Microsoft.

That's right. I said it. Just think about it.

Who could benefit the most by purchasing Sony's video game division?

Microsoft.
Oh please. Microsoft has had the ability to buy out (completely) Sega twice now. Twice, and once when they had a console with a few million already sold. If SCEI was bought by Microsoft, all hell would break loose. It would be broken up as an anti-trust.

And this takes the cake:

You might say there's no way the U.S. government would allow such a thing. Anti-trust, you say.

Just remember who's running the government. A Microsoft takeover would be treated with the same kid gloves that created DaimlerChrysler.
Right. Because Mercedes performing a hostile takeover of an American company falls under American laws despite not being in America. Not to mention that the forming of DCX is still only the 5th largest automobile company. Moron.

No no no. This takes the cake:

But there's more! Want an HDMI cable? That'll be another $100 to $125. Now we're at $850 or so. You've got a Blu-ray player, so you'll want a few Blu-ray movies -- Sony titles only, of course. Buy six of them while you're at it! At an average list price of $25 each, we're talking another $150. That pushes our total price to an even $1,000.
Who the hell wrote this? Peter Moore himself? $100-125 for an HDMI cable? try subtracting 100 from the latter and you pretty much their. And, FYI, DVD's cost about the same when they were new. And Sony isn't the only company making Blu-ray discs.

I love it when some idiot gets a blog.

@ Mr. Deap It's not necessary to post all those large pictures in here, especially since they were already posted here three days ago. Post one pic, and then provide a link for the rest. Not everybody is using broadband. Plus, the list for game release dates were posted several days ago in the game launch thread.

Here's a pic of the Eye Toy. I'm not sure if it was posted before. So, here it is below.

Also, there's rumor going around that Sony are going to add a second HDMI output for the 60GB, again, after taking one off from last year's specs. Whatever...

10329.jpg

They got rid of the dual HDMI ports? Wtf... they NEED those!

THE PS3 IS THE FUTURE!!

Everyone should have uber high speed connection to enjoy the PS3. If that person can't view the pics, it mean he doesn't have the money to buy a PS3 anyway. :sly:

Mr Deap
I've posted way much worst stuff in the XBOX 360 thread than here.
That's good for you.
Does that make you proud?

Guess I'll wait 3 years for the PS3 like I did for the PS1. That way I'll have more selection of games + cheaper :)
