The PS2 has 4mb of graphics memory, and that's it.
I know, and developers are still grouching about that.

And I do understand, believe me, that the PS3 with its 512megs of combined memory is a huge leap over a PC with a gig of system ram and a 256meg current gen graphics card. I've posted elsewhere that the new consoles will outperform 3ghz PCs with those specs because the 360, PS3 and Revolution are streamlined systems with blazing fast throughput, and aren't hampered with a Wincrash OS. The ram the PS3 will be equipped with will allow developers all sorts of opportunities that they've only dreamed of previously. In fact, the imagination will be the primary limit.

However, we've already had a letter pasted in by a game programmer that they're still going to have to treat these consoles as consoles, do skimpy routines and code and squeeze as much as they can into every load segment. I don't know how much developers will feel constrained at first, because all three of these systems are the equivalent of moving from a Sentra to a Z06.

On the other hand, the Sony people were bragging about "Toy Story" movie quality graphics. To do that, you'll need a ton of data in the box at once, and I don't think that 512 total ram is what developers would pencil in as their requirement. I have no doubt that when the next Next Gens come out that they'll have at least a gigabyte of system ram, and not because they have a Windows-like OS running them. Except maybe the XBox 720. :sly:

Honestly, I'm not bagging on the consoles. I'm sure that the games on all three will amaze me forever, just like Devil May Cry 3 and Gran Turismo 4 on the PS2. Those are astounding games. But I have no doubt that a PS3 with 512megs of system ram will deliver more movie quality graphics, give developers more liberty to realize their dreams, and be much more future proof.

EDIT: I'm curious about the second part of the above article which posted before mine, if it will mention system limitations hampering a few things.

Wow cell is benchmarked LINK

Found but havent read it yet so im excited :)

also a nice forbes article

LINK

That is really fascinating stuff...

One thing I hadn't considered is that Sony-Toshiba-IBM may have developed the architecture for the next generation computer, and many other devices, not just a monster of a game console/entertainment box. Another thing that intrigues me is the fact that the CELL itself can network. Just what will this mean?

owo, nice article, but he messed up this part:
"CELL is not a PC where you run 5 MS WORD windows, with 3 excel windows, and playing media player mp3 music in the background, with 10 internet explorer windows, and other programs to download games and movies from internet…etc. All this in the same time, so you need a lot of RAM, a big HDD, and a lot of general purpose integer calculations. NO ! the CELL is not designed for this kind of work or applications, but its designed like the emotion engine of ps2 ( the cell at this point of time is even more ambitious than the EE at its time ) mainly for multimedia and video games, those applications doesn’t need a lot of integer general purpose calculations capabilities, but a lot of floating point calculations. SO sony is not foolish to spend 3 billion $ and 5 years of development collaborating with the best semi conductor companies in the world ( Toshiba and IBM ) to create a CPU that is a monster in integer calculations, and not so good on floating point calculations. Sony concentrated mainly on floating point calculations because the main purpose of CELL is to run games not MS office applications.":dunce:

PS3 info coming soon:
Well Sony fans, it would appear that the drought of PS3 information is coming to a close. Jamil Moledina, Game Developers Conference (GDC) director, has revealed that SCE’s Phil Harrison will be dropping some new information at his keynote speech. If that is not soon enough for you, Koei’s president Kiyoshi Komatsu let slip at a press conference today that Sony will be holding a conference of its own on March 15th. Komatsu said that he has “consulted with SCE about what kind of details they should announce, and [has] told them that I'm hoping they will make an announcement that will heat up the game industry”.

Sony has yet to confirm the conference for the 15th, but no matter what it appears that we will be getting some new information this month. It seems a bit strange to hold a press conference so close to GDC; however it wouldn’t be completely unheard of. If there is any significant information given at the press conference next week you can expect it to be reiterated by Phil Harrison in his keynote.

Sony’s keynote speech at GDC, entitled “PlayStation 3: Beyond the Box”, will be held on March 22nd and will cap off what has been an amazing software month for the industry. Check back with PS3Portal frequently, we will keep this story updated and hopefully be bringing you some awesome new information next week.

Well the wheels keep turning on the already bumpy and downright tedious road of the Sony machine, but here is some new info on the release (sort of)

PS3 STILL "ON TRACK", LAUNCH PLANS NEXT WEEK?

Sony's Euro boss, David Reeves, says PS3 production is "on track" - plus, final launch plans unveiled on Wednesday?

15:23 Another day, another turn for the saga-wheel of PlayStation 3 production: while last week Sony admitted that manufacturing difficulties could hinder the console's current spring launch projection, now David Reeves, head of Sony's European operations, says that PS3 production is "on track."

Are we to read this to imply a spring launch is go for PS3? Well, that's the fans' dream but as we tip over the cusp of that season and into it proper, it's looking increasingly unlikely Sony's console will materialise prior to summer. Still, talking to trade magazine MCV, Reeves said that he wasn't worried about Sony's yet-to-be-revealed PS3 launch plans. "There are so many rumours out there but no-one really knows the facts," he said. "I know what's going to happen and I am honestly very, very confident about it."

Well, cheers for that Mr. Reeves, who went on to say in the interview that it's his job "to match day and date with the U.S launch... I am doing my very best to make that happen." Despite these words suggesting Sony is working toward a simultaneous North American and Europe launch for PS3, this isn't apparently the case. According to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe head of corporate communications, Nick Sharples, Reeves was simply stating that "it's his job and his responsibility to try and get PlayStation 3 into Europe as quickly as he possibly can. That's what he's trying to achieve ."

"It's certainly not meant to imply that there will be [simultaneous] day and date, or anything like that," Sharples added in comments given to GamesIndustry.biz. He reportedly went on to say that Sony at this stage is "definitely not" leaping aboard a simultaneous release wagon.

But the question on everyone's lips is still "When the hell are we going to get a release date, or dates, confirmed?" Current rumours suggest that it could be as early as next week when Sony divulges this eagerly anticipated PS3 info - speculation is rife that a publisher meeting on March 15 will shed more light on the PS3, including the all-important launch information.

Kiyoshi Komatsu, president of long-time PlayStation supporter Koei, said that he hopes Sony will finally break their silence at this meeting. "I've been consulted with SCE about what kind of details they should announce," said Komatsu. "I've told them that I'm hoping they will make an announcement that will heat up the game industry."

Unfortunately, Sony isn't like Nintendo or Sega, who played touch football with each other, or more like Tae Kwan Do. Sony tends to be like Microsoft and wage a darn war, and this contest between them is pretty much a war. As long as Sony keeps people in the dark about the PS3 launch details, thousands of people will hesitate to buy an XBox360.

I still doesn't matter, anyway. Stores still don't have XBox360 consoles in stock. If they do, they're gone in a day. There's still no short supply of people wanting to purchase the 360, but there are still short supplies of the console.

That's true, Solid L, but you have to know that Sony isn't about to let up on Microsoft because of that. Sony is a pretty wicked cut-throat competitor, and will be sure and kick Microsoft while they're down. One way of doing that is to dangle the lure of the potential release of the PS3 in front of everyone as long as possible. It also hurts sales of the other consoles a bit, including the PS2, but they've managed to get it out in sufficient numbers already to have profited from it handsomely.

But watch the shelves. I couldn't believe that Devil May Cry 3 is already a greatest hit, and has been out only about half a year! Not only that, it's a Special Edition! I think this is a sign that Sony and the game community are ready to make some substantial waves with the PS3, earlier than we suspect, and put the PS2 out to pasture.

Devil May cry 3 came out March 3rd, A year ago. That is the time most games become greatest hits. God of War, GT4 are also greatest hits now. Midnight Club 3 is about to be with bonous content. And this has nothing to do with the future of PS2. It will still sell games as strong as ever and it will have a longer life span than Xbox, a system with no big name first party titles coming out or any non mutiplatform "would be" blockbusters like Final Fantasy XII.

Also Xbox is the first console ever to have increased its price after a drop. Now xbox is $180 again with Forza. There are no more $150 systems being made. $30 more for a $20 game. So where does the extra $10 come from?

I tried to order God of War when I ordered MGS3S but they didn't have it available. That's OK, since my MGS3S game was a preorder, anyway. But, they would'nt combine the orders, and it was going to cost me an extra five bucks to ship it, so I didn't get it. I figured I would've bought it by now and played it, but haven't yet. I never will now, since I'm going to play nothing but MGS3S for the next few weeks, them all my other MGS titles. I'm doing a refresher course of MGS games, even though I pretty much know everything.

That's really strange about Devil May Cry 3. I didn't even see it till I went into a local Best Buy and saw rows of the game last October. Now admittedly I was so wrapped up in buying music gear on ebay for months, as well as GT4, Rainbow 6 and Battlefield 2 that I didn't check out games for weeks at a time. But it wasn't just me either. One of my relatives first saw the displays last fall too. Oh well, curiouser things have slipped past me. I hear there was a Presidential election in 2004. ;)

I don't know man, as much as I love MGS, I really think you're missing out on something GREAT with God of War.

Honestly, you can rent it (I'd do it now while BlockBuster still doesn't have late fee's, which are returning soon). You can probably beat it in 5-6 days if you give it an hour or so a day, and believe me, if You give it an hour or so, you'll probably end up beating it. And I don't think you're playing MGS3S online anyway, but if you ever do, then you really never will play God of War, because the online in this game = Sex.

i just got a email that i can win a PS3 (it was from GAME i trust it!) when it is released, do you think this tells us that it is coming out anytime soon?

I'm sure I'll get it, but probably not for a while. When I first played the demo, I didn't care for it that much. But, it looked fantastic and the game play was something new and unique. It just took me a while to get use to it.

Maybe I'll get after I'm done with MGS3:S.

Yes man, at least give God of war a rent, it's a very good game, and do it now or I'll bite you..grrrr:mad: :D

Definately, well, for a rent you'll be able to beat it, unless you plan on seeing a few of the extra videos and beating it on God Mode (which is crazy FUn I thought...haha) then you'll finish it in a matter of a week or two.

Really, I don't think you'll go wrong if you buy it used from Gamestop, then take it back 7 day's later and say you didn't like it. It's store policy and they don't have a choice. Safe way to go I'd say, or you could rent it.

btw, I you really should get an online adapter, otherwise you won't really get to "enjoy" all of the features of MGS3:S...because I've played the online game amongst some staff from GameDaily and it is just great. I really love it.

I went to buy one, and they were out. I never thought about getting one again after that. I doubt I will. I'm waiting for the PS3. I'll go online with that. So, no need to get the adapter now, since I'm not into online gaming like the rest of you.

I admit, MGS3:S has me very interested in online gaming. It looks like fun. I guess, I never cared for online gaming in the past because I never liked any of the games that were online. Plus, it seems there are new ways to dealing with those that cheat, or act like idiots.

Well, it's really hectic online, as in tense. When you're trying to hide from people as Snake, it's DEFINATELY much more fun that playing in the game. Human opponents as guards is just SO much harder. not to mention that people actually work better (sometimes, LOL). I really think it's the TRUE way to try to experience the MGS stealth feeling over the regular game.

The only thing that is kinda out there for me is when you're playing against people, the action is so tense that switching between 1st and 3rd person can be a bother...but it's still insanely fun.

Here's hoping tomorrow will be interesting on the PS3 front.

It's all an elaborate joke from Sony.

Tomorrow they are just going to say "Gotcha! There really isn't going to be a PS3, we're just yanking your chain, but really though, we'll make something"

Wouldn't that be funny? No.

But In all honesty I think this is their last chance to really make any big splashes before the end of their financial year end, which is March 31st. Right now their stock is falling, and without something to spark it, they'll have really bad close out numbers, so hopefully this will be what we've all been waiting for.

If Sony announces it at $399, then their stocks will probably skyrocket because it'll guaruntee a great price, tons of extras, and an almost sure fire success for blu-ray...maybe this was their idea all along? Because bumped up stocks give them more money and a *tad* more elbow room as far as losses go.

This is good news... finally we will have some of our questions answered. All we've been hearing are news of delays, prices, Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD... etc. I can't wait to hear what Sony has to say tommorow.

PS3 release in Japan in NOVEMBER 2006 ????

That would really su*k... for me personally and for Sony as a company.

If you actually read the report its based on the Dow Jones reprot (money analists) that spoke to a paper in Tokyo (jurno's), so this reprort is coming from two sources that I dont turst one bit. Dont beleive everything you read unless its from the horse's mouth. wait till tommorow or when sony will speak out.

on another note has anyone see these?

Here pictures are to an obvious Design of the PlayStation 3 of Sony. Unfortunately there is no description or confirmation for the authenticity of these pictures, therefore is it with caution to be enjoyed. However it is briefly before the Sony sony-Meeting in Japan the day after tomorrow on 15 March conceivable that these pictures are "oozed". We experience details only on 15 March. - Translated using bablefish

Will a price of $399 be a good thing, as far as stock markets are concerned? After all the PS3 isn't going to cost $399 to produce. Still, a good up-beat presentation could make a difference and a competitive price for the PS3 could make a lot of peoples day.
I just hope something concrete will happen. I'm fed up to the back teeth with endless speculation and guessing. Hopefully a few coffin lids will be nailed shut, but I'm not too optimistic....

According to that paper report, the one thing causing the delay is the one BIG thing I've been waiting for. How Sony is going to use managed copy copy protection with the BD. Sony don't even know, yet. Bleh.

Oh, that PS3 is a FAKE. That's the only word I recognized in that article, BTW.

CRAP!

In the "who didn't see this coming?" news of the day Sony has announced that the Playstation 3 won't be shipping this Spring. A Japanese newspaper is reporting the launch has been pushed back to November in Japan, potentially leaving US high definition gamers PS3-less until 2007. The stated reason for the delay? Copy protection related to the Blu-ray drive. Apparently that preliminary AACS agreement wasn't enough, or maybe Sony is just planning on slipping a combo (or at least 4x drive) in the unit.

It's been pretty obvious that the PS3 would slip, with it being March and developers still not having final hardware to work on, but November seems pretty late, it will be interesting to see how they keep the hype machine rolling all year long.
