PS3 General Discussion

Urgh! Sony are a bunch of tools!

Just downloaded the latest update which is required 3.50 (3D Blu-Ray Playback) and reboot after install. Come on to a message which says my sign-in info is incorrect for the PSN (impossible, I automatically sign-in) so I keep trying and trying until I decide to try the forgot password route, error page! PSN Status page on Sonys website gets a 404 and a tiny little bar across the top saying it's down for scheduled maintenance. Well thanks for telling me Sony.

Got my Batman platinum today. Tried the additional content, and it wasn't worth it. The combat challenges are easy, and the infinite challenges are somewhat boring - determined leaderboard top men's cannon fodder. I would have enjoyed the Predator Challenges anyway, though these new maps were somewhat less creative.

I've downloaded and installed the Joker maps a few days ago, but they did not appear in the game. What gives? I've downloaded them again, and installed. I'll see if they're showing the next time I load the game.

And what if I don't read gaming sites everyday or check the Playstation website? Which I don't, and I'm sure many others don't either.

Why didn't they push a notice through over the last few days, it only needed to be a little dialogue like the one telling me a system update is required.
And what if you didn't sign on in the last few days? They put out a press release and put a notice on their Blog and Web site. You can what if all day long, but they did give notice.

There is always one person that complains they weren't notified about scheduled maintenance in the specific way they prefer.

And honestly, you can't live without PSN for 12 hours? The rest of the system still works.

The Play As Joker stuff? That is just for challenges. When you select your Batman suit you can also choose to be Joker, and then all the thugs are turned into guards.

Tried to log in today.
Was forced to do an update.

Can not log into PS3 Network anymore, since I have the same over the Gran-turismo site, I guess it is a Sony issue?

Seems I missed it in the messages of today.

Anyone else getting a "this service is not available in your region" message when trying to get into the PS Store?

Seriously guys? We were literally discussing the scheduled maintenance taking PSN down today in the posts just before yours.

I've been having internet issues lately so I wasn't sure if it was something on my end or from the maintenance. Apologies, next time I will just look at my screen with a blank stare.

Even if it is something on your end it is impossible to tell until the PSN comes back up.

They probably have more people signing in over the last few days then they get visits to their blog. I'm a casual gamer so I never visit their sites or read game blogs. Even if I wasn't notified before why wasn't I informed when I failed to log in or try to reach the forgotten password pages? They had plenty of chances to say the issue was caused by maintenance, but as I was unaware I though something had changed with my account.

I can live without the PSN fine, that isn't my problem.

I can't remember, but doesn't the news ticker give Blog headlines? And the PS Store updated yesterday to avoid people missing it today, and in all their store update news they mentioned why the update was a day early. So really, there were clues to tip you off, available directly from your PS3, yesterday. If you signed on yesterday the news ticker would have been announcing the update.

And not everyone likes pop-up or pushed messages.

How do you keep up with games coming out?

Because the connection to the server is likely not up. No server means no messages coming back to you. Of course they did have a message on the relevant section of their Web site where they knew people woudl go if they were unaware.

Well, this isn't their first PSN maintenance down time. Not even the first down time this year. This is how they do it. Apparently it is working fine for them. I'm sure you can call them or visit one of their forums to call them tools and your complaint will reach those that can do something about it.

I'm not sure, I disabled my news ticker because it was annoying me. As far as I'm aware you can't disable the pop-up messages for when one of your friends comes online, when you receive a message or when a system update is required, so whether people like them or not important information is displayed to the user. I don't visit the store everyday either. Basically I log into my user account, insert a disc then play, like you would with a games console.

Other times it was the usual time out error which is expected with maintenance work, however this time being prompted with a message informing you that your email and password is no longer the right combination doesn't suggest maintenance at all.

US doesn't allow disabling of the news ticker, but we can disable notification messages.

But if you disabled your news ticker and then complain about not seeing news...

So, how do you know what to buy and when? I mean, by this time next year I can think of three games I am excited about buying other than GT5. No wait, four. I forgot Dead Rising 2.

I always get an error code. The US appears to be getting some service not available in your region message today. They must be doing something different than normal.

While trying to solve various wifi connection issues I've had, it was a tip given to switch off the ticker along with the media server. They worked so I never switched them back on.

I don't. GT5, Dirt 3 and Black Ops are the only games I can think of that I want. I only know about those because of the threads we have on GTP, and I'm only interested because I have the games they are replacing.

We usually get service not available or error codes but like I've said. Not this time.

Sony has announced that Netflix streaming will no longer require a disc starting in October. So...no disc, an a search feature make PS3 the best Netflix streaming device outside of the PC.

I heard they will be adding the search feature to the 360 version as well. Ideally they will be the same application after October.

iPhone with AV cables > PS3, because it isn't the size of house.

I am glad they are ditching the disc, maybe I will actually use my PS3 as a Netflix box now. Although now that I have my media PC hooked into my TV I don't even know if I need to bother.

On another note why didn't I know Theme Hospital was out on the US PSN store! That game is epic.

Great news, thanks man. 👍

I just sold my Xbox 360(no disc, of course), and I was willing to put up with the Netflix disc. This does make my life a tiny bit easier. :D

Yeah, I use the disc myself and can't wait to be rid of it.

EDIT: The Streaming App is available today for Canadian users and American users will get it next month.

Iphone has a remote? Or do you play jump rope when someone passes by the tv with your 25 foot hdmi cable?

What do you need a remote for? And do you have that many people walking around your house during your movie that it's going to be a problem with a cable?

My point is, I find the iPhone to be better because I have a Netflix box where ever I go. Go to my girlfriend's house, boom there I have Netflix. Sit at the airport, boom there I have Netflix. Anywhere I have wi-fi, I have Netflix in my pocket for really easy use.

My PS3 or 360 aren't nearly as portable, which is why for me I don't use them that much since I'm typically watching movies at someone else's house. Before I was using my laptop, but the phone is smaller.

A console might be a better option for some, but in terms of portability you aren't going to beat a phone.

You might want to send that back to Apple if it keeps doing that. Sounds like quite a serious fault.

I don't understand how such a tiny device could make such loud noi-BOOM!!!

Your point is still valid, but for me (and many others I imagine) having a long cable running across the room to the tv is asking for someone to yank the thing off the table. Not to mention the fact that a cable of such length (for it to reach my coffee table) would probably weigh enough to pull the device off the table.

You sit that far away from your TV? I don't know I typically just leave my phone on the tv stand and watch the movie. Works well enough.

reasonable size HD tv in the living room, couches are at a comfortable viewing distance which is about 7 or 8 feet at the max.

You can have multiple devices registered at once, so I don't see why it matters. You don't have to choose. At the rate I see Netflix being added into TVs and DVD/Blu-Ray players I doubt your portability will matter much in a few years.

And does the iPhone do HD or is it more like the Wii version?

I just bought an enclosed entertainment center because I have a kid. I don't need lots of people walking around to be a problem, just one.

Sit at the airport, boom there I have Netflix.
And eyestrain. It is the one thing I will give credit to the iPad for.

You sit that far away from your TV?
How close do you sit? My TV is on one wall, my sofa on the other.

You may want to watch that eyestrain.

I haven't hooked my phone into an HDTV so I'm not sure on that. It probably doesn't though as that would be quite a bit of data to stream to a phone. I can't imagine the iPhone has enough umph to do that either.

My point was that the iPhone, and I suspect other mobile devices do this too, are better due to their portability. I know people get touchy with anything slightly negative about anything PS3 related so perhaps I should have said iPhone > video game console. Your best bet is probably still a laptop though.

A phone isn't that big, even with a closed entertainment centre there is room somewhere. If you say there isn't you are just being difficult.

And eye strain? The iPhone's screen (as well as other mobile devices) is fine. It's clear, it's bright, and I don't know to many people who have issues with it. I do about 70% of my daily work from my phone and I have awful eyes...it's never been an issue for me ever.

The only negative thing about mobile devices, especially iPhones, is that the battery life is crap when you are streaming. Although I watched a movie at the airport on my phone and over 80 mins it used about 60% of the battery, so it could be worse but lord knows it should be better.
