you can still get your hdd out of your ps3.
But you can't use it with any PS3 other than the one that formatted the drive, they're locked to only work with one system... You can, however, back up the drive onto an external hard drive then restore another drive from that back up, which is the only way to copy otherwise protected saves.
Interesting that I'm not the only one whose Fat PS3 died thanks to GT5. I have seen this happen with other big releases, as someone mentioned there were a lot of reports of it happening thanks to Heavy Rain, but I suspect that's because a lot more people buy the big releases so you'd have more people saying that particular game was what did it, when it was going to happen soon anyway.
I wonder, if my console wasn't hot when it died, does that mean it's more likely to be a PSU failure than the solder reflowing itself?
Just thought I'd let you guys know that I'm getting a replacement 160gb Slim tonight, Sainsburys didn't have any and they're not on their site so I've phoned HMV to get them to save me one so I can pick it up later, £239.99. Good opportunity to do some work!
Edit: Also, thanks for the repair shop suggestions, guys, but at the end of the day given it's age and probable state of wear, I suspect something else would go wrong not long after the YLOD fix. I think I'd prefer the peace of mind that comes with a new console to be honest, thanks though.
