PS3 just YLOD'd

My PS3 YLOD during NBA 2k11 on Halloween, I sent it away to be fixed and mostly to retrieve my game saves and photos, since I've had it back I've got 2 more NBA 2k games out of it, I picked up my GT5 signature edition today as I've been away, skipped installation, got through the opening movie got to the main menu and YLOD again!

Didn't even get to do a lap :(

I've done the self-fix three times on my old 60gig, it lasted 3 months the first time, then one month, then a couple weeks.

Each time you heat the solder up to that point, it weakens it, and lowers the melting point. It's only a matter of time that it happens again.

I finally accepted my losses and bought a 160gig bundle today. Came with two games (Infamous GH, and NHL 11), which I intend to sell to make a few bucks back.

On to GT5!
 
Is it because the solders are lead-free that's why they are weak? I reckon same thing happens to Xbox 360's and even some MacBook's... CMIIW

Every time you heat the ICBs up it burns away the flux. Without the flux the solder has nothing to stick to... hence why it is weakened.

For what it may worth...I heated it at around 180 degrees, and not 350 like the video says..will see how long it will last.

Was saved today it started back up, got up to level 6 before it konked out again, am going to get a new ps3 tomorrow so I can play GT5 properly. Got that VW bus challenge first go!

My Ps3 YLOed too :( (Fat 80gb with retrocompatibility)

Two days ago I was playing BD2, then i turned it off. in the afternoon I tried to turn it on again to play GT5p but it YLOed.

Is there a way that it is just the power supply?? coz mine didnt shut down (overheat), I turned it off the last time it worked.


Thanks god I didnt find a copy of GT5 in Gamerush that day... imagine opening ur gt 5 and trying to put it on ur ps3 for the first time just to see your ps3 YLOing!!!!

If it turns on and beeps, then immediately shuts off, it means your power supply is working fine.
 
Hehe after reading this thread and considering the age and usage my OG Phat 60Gb with BC and the lot I figured you know it's not a bad idea to redo the thermal paste(I have had it from just a few months from release)

So yep cracked it open(had done it before to give it a good dusting about a year ago) no fear of warranty.
Not being new at all to redoing thermal paste it was a fairly easy job. The original TIM was pretty hard and crusty. Cleaned it up real nice and put some Arctic Ceramique on and stuck it all back together fire it up and start GT5 start playing and LOL!

YLOD!! Now this is just typical for me I go and "fix something" that wasn't broken. Okay then, apart you come again then. Check the contact for the heatsinks check for gaps in my paste job, do a little touch up. Reassembly begins again.

Okay now I have really made a mess it is now instant YLOD. I'm guessing I may have pulled on the chips when I removed the heatsink for the 2nd time(Ceramique is pretty sticky)

Okay then time for drastic measures.

Nope no heatgun.(it's well after midnight now...)

Well I think I am gonna try the old "bake it" trick.

Eureka! it's alive!

Now of course I instantly plug in an external HDD and do a backup(figures I just upgraded the 60 to a 140 I took outta my laptop)

Needless to say I haven't played GT5 yet today to give it a good thrashing but I have been catching up on Fringe today and it's seems to be fine so far.


Lesson learned "if ain't broke don't fix it"
 
My PS3 just died yesterday from the YLOD. It was still alive until, being the idiot I was and trusting my older brother who didn't know anything about the YLOD, put in GT5 to see if it was properly working and it managed 2 minutes in GT5 until it bricked. I am going to be very sad if I can't get my PS3 working again because then I would probably lose all of my car collection(almost 100 cars, about 2 to go :( ) and I would lose my progress in the game :(

For those who are getting the YLOD and want to salvage your files, you should look at youtube on how to reflow your ps3 to get it working temporarily (heat gun, baking, shimming). I advise that after doing this, do not run any games on it since it can risk another YLOD before you can salvage anything. You want it to boot up with minimal stress into the XMB. Now after you 'fix' it, you need another ps3 to do a system transfer to the other system with an ethernet cord. This transfer virtually CLONES your ps3, meaning all your protected files etc will be transfered along with settings and ownership of files. Just follow the on screen instructions on how to do it once you select it in the XMB. Any download content needs to be deactivated on the old ps3 so that the new ps3 can activate them and use them (psn games etc). During the file transfer, I would recommend leaving a fan of some sort blowing on the YLOD system with the upper casing left off to prevent a melt down during the transfer, better safe than sorry. I have had to do this with both of my fat ps3 systems.

Backing up the system via usb external flash or hdd will not enable it's use for a different ps3 system (bound by mac address serial numbers). The only way to make another ps3 run your old saved games and protected content is to transfer the system over. The process clones your old ps3 to a different one while changing all the file permissions to give the new system ownership of all files.
 
I just ordered a 160gb yesterday. My phattie hasn't been used much until GT5 so hopefully it can hold out long enough. I looked on ebay and these fatties with a few extras are selling for as much as a new slim. That convinced me to get a new one. I'll sell the old one on ebay and likely break even.

I was able to reflow my PS3! Using gilksy's guides (heat gun, thermal paste and clamp). I hope it lasts long enough or until I can buy a Slim.

Me too, did it last night, had the YLOD (was just watching PlayTV oddly, hadn't played GT5 that day...), took it apart, blew out the dust, did the reflow and replaced the thermal compound.

Boots up now, about 6 screws spare 👍

Put the hard drive cage lid on in the wrong order though, so it's on the slant and hard drive doesn't go all the way in, thus taking it apart again tonight to sort that out :)
 
YLOD hit me again. I'm currently on my second reflow. I don't really want to put some stress on my PS3 any further. If this gets fixed, I would probably just let it stay as it is. My bad, I rushed the first reflow a bit. Time for a Slim, I guess. :)

Backing up can be restored on a different ps3. I had mine backed up, it ylod. On my new ps3 after restoring the back up, I had all my movies, music, themes, game updates, and the majority of game saves. A few game saves were locked to the original ps3, but most worked. I tend to back up monthly now and save my game saves at the end of each day.

just got a 160gb SLIM for bday

wanted to know if doing endurance races or playing for 4+ hours straight will increase the chances of getting your PS3 messed up

You will be fine with a slim. Just make sure it is well ventilated, which is the same for any electrical device!
 
Yup, I reckon Slim is more reliable, mainly because it runs cooler and eats less power (parts are newer/smaller). I've read somewhere the real problem with the original PS3 is the lead-free solder (BGA), heat dries it up. Same with Xbox 360 RROD.

By the way, I got my second YLOD fixed. But I won't be playing any games until my Slim arrives.
 
Well my original 60gig has died...RIGHT AFTER I BACKED UP MY SAVE YEESSSSS!. It has been reflowed but that is only a bandaid they break again. I will just get a slim now and move my saves from the memory stick.
 
I've got a launch PS3, 60GB version.
I bought a new HDD a while back though, a 320GB one.
Now, if my PS3 YLOD's, won't the HDD be fine? Won't I just be able to buy a new PS3, and put in the HDD that I'm using now?
I can't imagine the HDD taking any damage, because the PS3 YLOD's, but I'd like some confirmation :)
 
It does not affect the drives. If you put a drive from one playstation into another it will prompt a format and erase all the data.

Well that's it then - I'm backing up all my save data.
Weird thing is, I've really beat up my PS3 over the years, and I've never had any problems with it, even though it's the one most likely to YLOD.
But thanks for clarifying ^^ I've got a job to do now.
 
I personally dont use the back up because it takes too long and only my saves are important. I just copy those to a memory stick. Some people like the back up however.
