I do not know why anyone is complaining about the way it looks. The buttons are perfect, and the it will be more scratch-resistant than the thicker version. If you check out www.ps3fanboy.com, they have some more official pictures and specs. It will NOT be backwards compatible at all. I am an owner of the very first PS3 in Idaho, USA, and I am looking forward to this one, because my 60GB original died about a week ago. I am going to appreciate the new 120GB hard drive, and the new 3.0 firmware update (with its really needed updates)!!!

Nah the buttons look out of place, why did they need to put circles around them?

*sigh* No backward compatibility, that's just lame. I don't understand why I shouldn't be able to play older games on my newer system. I don't want a ton of systems laying around my house. I have a 60GB system now and it can't plya PS1 or PS2 games for beans, which is really disappointing.

I think it's just a ploy for people to re-buy the games through the PSN store.

I don't really care, I mean the buttons aren't there to be played with... you literally touch them TWO times every time you play: power on, eject disc (the power off with controller). Besides it is a NEW PS3! Who cares? lol Mine just died so I am kind of excited for this new model.

Why doesn't your 60GB run backwards compat? Mine did until a week ago. I thought all 60GB models run PS2/PS1 games? The funny thing is, after about 6 months or so, when good games started coming out for the PS3, I completely dropped my PS2 games and traded them in for chump change at my GameStop! Just to think GTA: San Andreas went for $5!!! lol

Not bad - it's not TINY, but it's smaller.. from this view; it's actually wider (front to back) than the original is.. I would not be able to fit this in my current setup (a 40g, a 60g, an x360, and a GC; they all sit vertical, and at an angle so they fit on the shelf. That will not happen for me with this one)
So it's pretty much the same machine as the 120g that is currently available, correct?

Well yes, except the current model is a 160GB model. So for getting the Slim, you get 40GB less of memory at $100 less. And obviously, the smaller size. Even though it may look fatter in the pictures, it is overall 33% smaller than the original. Oh, and you don't get anything else other than a controller with the Slim.

It runs them, it's just that they are laggy, really really really poor graphics, or just freeze up. It's sort of annoying. I still have my PS2 which I can hook up and play though.

From the way the slim looks it seems like Sony has decided to go for a totally barebones approach and literally give you what you need and nothing more (smart from a business point of view). Its design in my opinion is no where near as aesthically pleasing as the fat one, for one the matt black plastic actually makes it look like its from a previous generation. Yes it may well be more resistant and durable but I liked the piano black on the PS3. Most I guess are only interested in how it plays not how it looks.

Im also surpised that the slim has arrived so quickly and I think there are 2 reasons for this, the backlash about the PS3 and its pricing... and the recession. I do think later down the line there will be another slim which will probably bring it down to PS2 slim DVD size.

I hope with this one they have addressed the Blu Ray drive failures and also the YLOD issues.

Thats odd, my 60GB with BC played all my PS2 games flawlessly and they probably looked slightly better. It depends whether you have a console with hardware or software based BC.

Robin.

I'm discusted by the price policy of Sony... $299 is not equal to 299 EUR. A little less motivation to buy a console. Also dissapointed that no big news were announced during press conference. Hope that TGS will do better...

Let's be FLAT honest for a second...

For what the Euro currently exchanges at 299 Euro is $422.38US

Stop complaining, what you wanted I assume is US pricing in Europe which would be 211 Euro

Stuff is just cheaper in America, one of the few remaining "perks".

I would get a slim ONLY if the market for BC compatible 20GB/60GB/80GB models goes higher than what it cost for the slim and I doubt that would happen.

I'm just running out of space....

I could change my PC output to DVI and leave it DVI so I don't run into any DRM issues. That would leave my VGA port for a Dreamcast VGA box... I still have one open Component input, one S-Video and one Composite output.

That's just one issue, I have two power sticks, (2) USB Hard Drives, 5.1 System, Direct TV Box, 24" LCD, PC, OTA HDTV Antenna and Printer all occupying two plugs and two sticks.

The PS2 Plays PS1 games, The PC has ePSX and I have a PSOne only because I "lost" my original PSX console I got when it was released in the US (Pre-order). If I got a PS2 Slim, where I am suppose to put this thing?

BC compatible is important for other reasons than just playing PS2 games. A co-worker keeps buggin me when about when I get a PS3 will I sell him my slim PS2 for peanuts. I can put it in my car (I have a screen in it). Otherwise I have PS3 taking up valuable real estate in my room, its not tiny its about the size of my Direct TV box.

Quite pleased to see that I dont like the look of the slim version, one less temptation to waste money on...
Definitely prefer the gloss black finish on the original, much more classy!

Still, hopefully the slim (and the price cut) will give a decent boost to the PS3s sales (given logically the more people buying the console the more developers will want to release games for it...)

Amazon.co.uk
As you may know, this product can sometimes be in great demand... As a result, each household may only purchase five units.
LOL at Amazon's purchase restrictions...
5 per person indeed....

Congrats Sony, you've figured out a way to make me want to buy a PS3, finally. The lack of PSOne and PS2 support is somewhat troublesome, especially since I still use my 360 to play a few of my old XBOX titles, but I'll survive. I'm thinking I may wait for some of the bundled 80GB models to float around at the right price to buy in. The "Slim Factor" isn't that big of a deal for me.

We'll see. Chances are I'll buy a PS3 come holiday time.

Thing is, most people who want to buy the PS3 but can't is because of the price of the thing, if you kept in the BC, it'd be more, and that isn't a massive part of the market for Sony. In my 8 months or so, I've never played anything other than a PS3 game, I'm considering buying FFVII on the store. But at £7, it's not exactly much is it?

It still plays PSOne games.

And a 'fix' to play PS2 games is still on the way.

What I like about the slim PS3 is the bright metal frame of the USB ports. The old ones are so damn dark, you need a flashlight just to find them!

I don't want it, though. Only two USB ports? I need three. Two for my controllers, which I never unplug. I need the third for my flash drive. I hate to unplug things over and over again because it's been my experience that is when the connections goes bad or breaks.

I also like my camera flash card input on my 60GB launch PS3. I use it a lot, and would like to keep it.

I've been through a couple PS3's already because they feel the need to die on me, is there any way to know which one I have?

It has everything as the current 80GB System has and they all do the same thing. Its not pretty but it will grow on the user who buy it. It will be nice if Sony returns PS2 BC. Hats off the Sony for the redesign. I also noticed the last 80GB systems have no heat protection for the disc drive. My launch 60GB disc could run for hours and come out cool. And one whole side of the PS3 would be totally cool. I miss than :).

So, is there any reason not to buy a PS3 now? Can the bickering end?

I dont know solid maybe if they shaved another $50 then... Nah I'm kidding. 120GB Dual Shock3, Free Online, great features, Blu-Ray $299. PS1 and PS2 launch price. Great game library. Yeah ,what reason does one waiting have now not to go there?

Look at the model number right by the build date on the bottom of the system.

Apparently it's software emulation.

Why wouldn't someone buy a PS3 now? Well exclusive games are always a factor. I know I am more keen towards the 360's exclusives over the PS3's, Project Gotham, Forza, and Mass Effect being a few of them.

If I was console-less right now and had to choose between a 360 and a PS3 I would probably go with the 360 for the exclusive games and for the fact that pretty much all of my friends own one where only a few of my friends own PS3's. OK well maybe that's not entirely true, if I was console-less I'd probably use the money to upgrade my computer a bit more since I find PC gaming much better than any console.

Even though I have a PS3 I rarely use it. Pretty much the only thing it's done in months is stream media from my computer...when it's working of course.

I wouldn't buy one of these. Sure, the smaller-form factor is a plus, also the fact that it uses up less electricity, but, there are a few things to consider:

- We don't know if it'll be more reliable than the current models, which tend to YLOD.
- There's no Install Other OS function -- Not a big deal to the vast majority of people, but it is to me.
- Only two USB ports.
- No memory card readers.
- Not sure on this one, but I assume it has no backwards compatibility.

Not complaining here, I love my 60 GB PS3 but it would seem that every PS3 model that comes out is a step backward in terms of features. So, scrap the abbility to install Linux on your system, which to me was incredibly cool considering it's a commercial gaming console and all.

For those worried about the lack of USB ports could you just hook up a hub? Or does the PS3 not support that?
