Are You Going To Buy a PS3 Slim?

While you are absolutely correct about using the PS2 component cable for the PS3 for 1080p, due to how many more devices use HDMI, you can actually get said HDMI ($3.55) for less than the component ($7.98) and still have enough to buy an Optical Toslink Cable ($2.14 (if you need one like I do)) and have change left over. 👍
Ever feel like there is some kind of monoprice amnesia that sweeps across the Internet every few months? I swear we have to remind people that HDMI is not expensive multiple times a year.

Looks like they didn't bother with much ventilation. Normally I wouldn't be concerned with the heat, but as I've killed 3 Xbox 360s, 1 PS3, and a hard drive in my second PS3, I'd want as many holes and complicated heatsinks as they could put in it for cooling...
I am interested in seeing the dissection videos when it is finally available to the public. If it keeps the liquid cooling system and has the smaller, and cooler, chipsets then I imagine it should be fine, or at least as good as the current models.

Robin, can you post POLL on who will buy the SLIM?

Yeah I will post one up now :)

Me too, its one of the things I really look forward to when a new piece of tech comes out.

Robin.

In the last year and a half, it appears I've mentioned or linked to monoprice in 23 posts. Just doing my part to save people some cash. :D

I voted in the newly added poll. I was the first, do I get a prize?:sly::lol:
Right now I don't intend to get a PS3 Slim as I already own a PS3, but in the future who knows. I had to get two PS2s because one broke and I am already on my second PS3 ( refurb ), so if it breaks again and the Slim becomes the best option, then maybe that decision will change.

I'm not that worried since I have left my PS2 Slim(which has little ventilation) on for like a week and it wasn't hot.

Than again this is the overheating generation of video games.:nervous:

If there was an option "If i didn't have a PS3 already I would" I would vote for that.

If there was an option "If i didn't have a PS3 already I would" I would vote for that.

Third option, "No, I already own a PS3".

I might get one if and when my current ones dies.

I wonder if there will be overheating concerns with this model? GameSpy says the new fans seem kind of dopey.

Hey guys, If you think 2 USB slots are too little, and no card reader, you can buy this little device.

I think it's pretty cool, but I need to find some review.

Joystiq did a review. It works fine, but looked stupid, in their opinion.

However, I am not sure it will fit with the slim model properly, as it was designed to kind of tuck under the lip of the larger PS3.

I couldn't find a reason to get the slim unless you are a first time Ps3 buyer, or your current Ps3 has failed. It does look pretty cool. Unless you are confined for space or don't like the orignal Ps3 design, there doesn't seem to by any standout reasons or features to upgrade a pefectly working original Ps3. $300 is cheaper but not cheap by any means.
:)👍

I don't know what to do...
Should I get the PS3 Slim or just buy the Phat one cause it looks nicer and it will inevitably be cheaper.
I'll have enough money in like 3/4 months.
So yeah, gimme advice peeps...
Allyn 👍

I'm going to buy one, just because i want one! I will have it for a spare, and maybe to watch a few blu-rays on!!:)👍

I still own my Original 60 GIG model to this day, but, I will buy the slim for a reason, 36% less energy use. As well it looks cool, 120 gigs is planty so I don't think i will swap it with Bigger and Faster HDD. Only when SSD drop in pricing.

By the way guys, since I never bought 2nd PS3 , is it easy to switch my Profile PSN to the new System? Will my credit card info transfer as well or that's for the HDD?

So this means the phat should drop in price ....... you beaudy:tup:

It should, but it hasn't. Click on the EB link provided before, the new slim will be cheaper than ANY OF THE FAT VERSIONS!! :grumpy: $499 for 120Gb slim, $529 for 40Gb fat. :odd:

And still the 60Gb is going for $700 here. You'd think they would've finished milking that cow a long time ago, especially since they are all pretty used now.

My neighbor had to get a second PS3 and I believe all he did was log in and no problem.

Of course he didn't backup at anytime and lost all HDD info but all was well.
Just remember to backup often as you never know when they're going to crap out on you.

EDIT: Just about all stores in the USA have the fat PS3 for $299 US.

Yes. When you setup your account it will ask you to sign up for PlayStation Network where you would normally sign in. When you click on it you have the option to use an existing account.

I'm not positive, but I think the 36% figure is in reference to the current 80GB. The power usage difference is much larger between the launch 60 and the Slim.

I thought about buying it for the usb ports but I think you end up with only 3 USB ports, thats still not really enough, I wanted 4 so thats why I didnt buy it.

Thanks guys for quick response. So logging in will be no problem. I was thinking taking out my 180 gig drive from my PS3 FAT into the SLIM, but I figured, I start the games again, and not have too much junk on my hard drive.. just to have some fun like I never own a PS3 ; ) ..

MGS4 here we go again!!!!

The thingy? You will have 4 USB ports on FAT PS3, it only uses ONE usb port, 3 on the little thingy, and one extra on your PS3. So in the end you have 4. and card reader..

- We don't know if it'll be more reliable than the current models, which tend to YLOD.

I don't get why the hell everyone complains about the YLOD. Game Informer made a survey, according to which 54.2 PERCENT of Xbox 360s Red Ring or E79 or have some other hardware failure. Luckily for Sony, ONLY 10.3% of PS3s have the YLOD. I wouldn't be complaining!

The PS2 never ran hot to begin with...The PS3 on the other hand pumps out enough heat to heat a room. Its not quite the same.

As long as processor power keeps increasing the heat will come along with it. Maybe we'll get back to room sized systems and computers one day.

No, but some PSTwos had problems with overheating anyways. So did PSOnes, if my memory isn't failing me.

I was at Best Buy today looking at prices of PS3s and HDTVs.
I saw the 180GB PS3 with some game I don't want for $399.00, then the signs for PS3 slim "First week of September" for $299.00USD. I didn't even know about the slim, now I have choices . I've never had a PS3 but am ready to finally pull the trigger on one after playing GT5P at a friends. I'm not sure if that extra 40 gigs is worth it, but at least they seem to be reliable and have the largest hard drives so far, besides I was planning on that one anyhow. However the slim is new which makes me want it, I just don't want to buy something unreliable and have problems. I'm not sure I can wait for a long term review to come out to find out if they are any good or not. I guess it will come down to BB having them in stock when I go back for the TV and the PS3. Best Buy has two year protection plan you can buy though so maybe I can just exchange it if it craps out.

First off, I think the $399 phat PS3 is 160Gb, not 180, but I'm also guessing that is a typo as you have correctly stated that it is 40Gb larger, so I'll move on...

If you were looking at the 160Gb phatty with Uncharted* and the voucher for PAIN, it was a good deal (provided you wanted both of those games) but now that Uncharted has had a price drop, you're better off saving your $100 and buying a larger hard drive, if you ever need to. So far, my 80Gb has a ton of demos on it and it's still only half full after a year and a half. If I was putting my movies on the PS3 drive instead of my external, I'd need a larger HD long ago. It's all a matter of how you use it.

*Games are all a matter of opinion, but I think Uncharted is one of the best games I've ever played. If I were you, after you have your PS3, do yourself a favor and either download the demo from the PSN or go rent it for a weekend. Again, personally, I'd suggest renting as the demo throws you into the middle of the game instead of starting you at the beginning so you actually know what's going on. :)👍

What liquid cooling?
Er, ignore me. I had images of this in my head as a liquid cooling system (I'm old and nearly three years is rough on the memory), but seeing it now I realize it is just heatpipes. It looks completely different than the image I had in my head.

God, I'm getting old.

I just came from game mania: link. The official Sony price is: €279 for a 80gb PS3 with one controller and 2 games. €299 for the new slim version.
