Hmmm... As soon as I read this article:

Sony to disable PlayStation 3 operating system feature

I thought I'd come here and see what you guys though. Maybe you haven't heard yet, but coming April 1st, The PS3 is to lose another of its core launch features - the ability to install a 3rd party OS.

I don't know whether you do, or you don't use this feature. I don't at present, but I was going to use it once I upgraded my HDD, I guess I'll never get a chance to use it at all now... Thanks Sony!

Sony have apparently decided to remove this feature in response to the hacking exploits of Geohot, who had found a way to hack into the PS3.

What do you guys think of this?

Geohot's blog discussing this topic

Other features the PS3 has lost over time:

PS2 emulation. First in hardware, then in software.
SACD support
Flash card reader
2 usb ports
Now, 3rd party OS install

EDIT: Any chance a mod can move this to the PS3 forum, I must of clicked the wrong link! :dunce:

As with all the other features, none of these will effect me at all as I have a 60GB launch so I can run PS2 games and have the USBs which I really need as I use all 4 often (G25, USB keyboard, USB headset and a control charger.

I wouldn't plan on using a 3rd party OS as I don't like playing around with anything on my PS3 outside that which is official seeing as I can never afford to replace it should things go wrong).

seeing as its offically losing an offical feature, does that mean there will be another price drop?

but, yes, im happy i got a used first gen too.

OtherOS is/was an official feature. You can't mess up the GameOS by using it.

Oh I'm aware the feature may well be there to be used, but the words third party and operating system aren't words I like to put together as I'm absolutely IT illiterate. I bought a PS3 to play games on and thats what I do, so I will stick to the original OS and nothing else as it's the safest option. I don't even like installing new programs on my laptop unless I'm familiar with the company and know someone personally who's used it.

For example I've never heard of this Geohot so I wouldn't even go near it with a barge pole unless someone I know personally could vouch for it and run me through it.

Geohot = George Hotz = a guy that broke the iPhone OS as a teenager, which enabled jailbreaking your iPhone and iPod touch.

I don't see the need to install a third-party OS on your PS3 anyway - it's meant to be a games console not a computer...

Haha, the comments on the blog are worse than youtube, all people want is to pirate games, they don't care about linux a bit!

Well, I never pirated games, there's a store I can rent most games 2Euros for two days... but I hope there will be cfw, I'd love to have otherOS (and maybe some nice looking XMB) back...

Its absolutely disgraceful that they are removing this feature. It was an officially advertised feature which I purchased and therefore have the right to use. Im sure this is illegal in some way and you should see the fall out all over the web. This will also harm the guys who use PS3's as cheap clusters (supercomputers) including the US millitary. I certainly wont be updating.

Robin.

+1 :)

Isnt this a joke for April fools? I heard that it wasnt typed out by the usual guy who notifies you of updates, and does April 1st ring any bells? We will find out shortly.

Tis was being discussed in the PS3 general thread, but we'll leave this one here.

I've never lost them as I've never had them in the first place. I bought my PS3 knowing it couldn't do/didn't have any of those. If you PS3 could do those things, it still can. You're making it look like Sony are removing those features to, when they aren't, but this is the first feature that they are removing from existing consoles.

Oh, and PS3 tag added.

Don't agree with the above points made. PS3 original still has the features. It was 600 Euro. The new PS3 is 250 Euro. It's only logical it can do less.

As for the 3rd party OS install. Perhaps people should blame the hacker instead of Sony. How can anyone say it's not justified for Sony to disable a feature that capicitates dunning illegal games.

I certainly wont be updating.

Are you sure?

BBC News Article
Sony has said the update is optional, but those people that do not install it will no longer have access to features, such as its online games network and the ability to playback certain games or Blu-ray DVDs that require the most up-to-date firmware.

It looks like we have no choice but to update... :grumpy:

I agree, I have not lost any of the feature that are listed because I still have a launch 60gb model. I originally brought my PS3 with the understanding that all features that were available at launch would be available as long as I required them. I will be losing the ability to install a third party OS though.

It doesn't have to end in tears though. Sony could offer some form of compensation (in the form of free Store downloads), for those of us that have been inconvenienced by this move. 👍

Oh, and PS3 tag added.

How do you do that? :)

it's not only for using other OS for hacking, there was an artical that FBi was buy used 60gb versions on ebay for braking codes. One could also make a cheap super computer and use ps3 for science. there are other applications of other OS beside hacking.

Are you sure?

Oh yes, as my Blu Ray drive is busted I cannot do anything with it anyway. I'm not about to loose more features because Sony and its team of engineers can't patch threats made by a teenager!

I never installed another OS on the PS3, but taking away features that they used to advertise the console, is troubling.

i don't think Sony ever advertised another OS on the PS3.But i could be wrong

I am very upset by this, I do use Linux on my 60GB PS3 and I just wonder what will happen with my current partition. Will it become dead, wasted space on m HDD?

HOWEVER, I'm well aware that this might be an April's Fools joke. Boy do I want it to be.

It seems weird to me that this might be an April Fool's joke. It was posted by BBC on March 30. Pretty serious organization (relative to most of the internet, anyway), two days before April 1.

Is it legal for a company to intentionally cripple a product they've sold you?

If it's leading to damaging the integrity of the hardware, and indeed the product, yes. Protection of IP is more than enough of a reason to remove a feature.

This will affect about 0.00001% of PS3 owners. Move on.

(If of course it's not an April's Fool.)

SONY posted this in their official blog. The so called firmware update is releasing on April 1st. Doesn't matter how serious the BBC is, BBC is getting the information from SONY's blog.

I know, I'm just being hopeful that it really is a joke. I will be upset, yes, but I will obviously keep my PS3 and keep on lovin' it.

It's not an April fools. A company will not make themselves look bad, and give themselves negative publicity, in order to make a joke.

Couldn't you just fit in a new one then? 💡 :)

Totally agree. Also, as I understand it, it isn't even necessary as he doesn't need to use otherOS for his hack, just possibly could. Not sure about that, tho...

Soon we'll know if it all was just a (bad) joke... :nervous:
