So people without internet cannot play new games? I somehow doubt that, but... make.believe.![]()
No, they won't. If this were the case then this would also affect people without their PS3 connected to the Internet at all. However future games will require a newer firmware (without OtherOS). That's the point.

This only limits the ability to take games online because without the new firmware you can't access the PSN, which still doesn't affect people without Internet connected.

If it's leading to damaging the integrity of the hardware, and indeed the product, yes. Protection of IP is more than enough of a reason to remove a feature.
This will affect about 0.00001% of PS3 owners. Move on.
(If of course it's not an April's Fool.)
I read that someone has found a way to keep the Other OS (I won't post the link as I haven't had a chance to check if what he has done is legal or not).
Personally I've got no desire to run Linux on my PS3 and imagine that the majority of owners don't either. However, I don't accept Sony's published reason and am disappointed that they've removed something I have thought about playing with from time to time.
If I'd have had more warning I might have bought a new disk and used that for moving forward with firmware updates and kept the current one for playing with Linux. Given how cheap disks are these days that might have been a practical solution.
Is there any benefit to installing Linux on the PS3 other than the fact that up until now you could? I presume most PS3 owners also have a PC of some description.
I'm not trolling here, i'm just not aware of any reason why members of the public would need Linux OS on their PS3's.
Well, as of about 2hrs ago, if you don't have the update and are running through a PROXY or with the DNS trick, you can no longer get online with the PS3. Sad.
I've been wondering that too, and I'd also like to know how many of the people here complaining about Sony taking some of their toys away actually used otherOS...Thats what I have been wondering, except for the cheap super computer crowd whats the benefits?
As it stands, I will not be updating my PS3 even if it means no GT5.Game over for now 👎
Sony wants to see Geohot's firmware.

OK, let me put it this way... Microsoft (hypothetically) decides to remove, say, Windows Fax and Scan from Windows by way of an Automatic Update. According to your logic I'm allowed to complain about MS's actions even though I've never used Fax & Scan?I haven't but I don't see why that would be a valid argument? The point isn't that I haven't, it's that I won't be able to even if I wanted to. It's that they took away a feature that I paid for. It's that they SAID they wouldn't remove the specific feature.

If you haven't ever used something, imo you have no right to complain about it being taken away.
So your not gonna update so you can continue to have OtherOS that you haven't yet used, even if the cost is not playing a game you wanted to play?
Look buddy, look at it in a way that makes you feel better. How about those weren't features you paid for, but yet extra features that were included in your PS3 purchase?
I say swallow your pride, accept change, and don't support people like Geohot, who you could literally blame for this update anyways.... Just think about it yeah? What if you were Sony? What if it was literally your dollars being threatened by the idea of your product being hacked and now games are being rented, borrowed, or whatever and put on HDD's without ever purchasing the game.
The law SAID we will not pirate things...But we did it anyways...now we suffer the consequences
"Really? Your opinion on this issue is so strong that you're telling me what to do? No reason for you to get upset over my choice on the matter. "
On the contrary! You seemed upset, and I was really trying to give it a more positive outlook so you could feel more at ease. Sorry if I offended you fore it was not my intentions... Text may seem sarcastic and rude sometimes but I assure you I was really trying to get you to feel better![]()

So you take your four seat sedan to the shop for service. While in there, they remove the headrests in the back of the car.
THAT pisses me off severely!...
Some people compare this to the loss of PS2 backward compatibility. But it is only comparable to that in the Slim models, as the Slim models do not have Other OS or PS2 backward compatibility out of the box. No one with a PS2 compatible PS3 has had that compatibility taken away. It isn't the best comparison due to the circumstances in this case. But it is a way of pointing out that the "It Only Does Everything" machine does two less things if bought now than it did when it launched. What do you mean by lose another feature?

Dave_sz and I rarely agree on things, but we are in some agreement on the poor form by Sony by doing this. Now, I am not refusing to update my system because I didn't use Other OS. That doesn't change the fact that when I purchased the system it was a feature of the product.
What do you mean by lose another feature?
Losing Other OS in the 60 GB model is not losing another feature, as we haven't had any other feature taken away. That is what I meant by saying that Other OS and PS2 compatibility are only comparable in slim models, as those are the only models to not have either. Why wouldn't you just compare it to the launch model PS3s? The 60gb cost more because of the few extra features and the hardware differences. I paid for those differences and those features. Some years later they decide to take a few of those extra features and delete them through updates and not refund my money?
seeing as its due on April 1st, could it be a wind up?
