Some people seem to have been banned at thier own request.

Why?

Why dont they just leave? Are they so addicted that the do not trust themselves to stay away?

I'm like that. GTP is too addicting...

For example, I will want a temporary ban for a week or so when my exams come in a few years. I could stay away from GTP myself without asking, but it's too addicting to stay away and will distract me from my studying. If I were banned, I can't view GTP's forums at all so I won't be distracted.

Some people request to be temporarily banned when they need to spend more time doing schoolwork etc. and they would like to have the temptation of spending time here (voluntarily) taken away from them. Makes sense to me. It's like a nicotine patch - the proviso is that willpower is still required, but the patch helps take the edge off. Maybe GTP should come with a warning - posting can be addictive!

They probably can't trust themselves to not post at GTP, which admittedly, wastes valuable time.

Although one fairly-new member requested a self-imposed ban for a year; does anyone think he'll remember this place when he returns?

Most notable of the self-banners was VipFreak. lol
I can see where the people come from though. I seem to spend all my waking hours on GTP when my computer is on.

Okay, its a fair answer...

I thought there was some other reason, but this does seem logical given that there are younger members who need exams.

Do you know if you can get a ban on MSN messenger? My 14 year old daughter is sitting her exams right now and we need a bloody crow-bar to extract her from the computer...

plus it will give us a chance to use the computer once in a while...

You could always uninstall the MSN Messenger program! :)

Simplest way would be to just disallow MSN Messenger in your firewall (that is, if you use a 3rd party firewall). Another easy way would be to password protect access to the computer (but if she needs the PC for her studying then this isn't an option). You can password protect her user account (if she doesn't have a user account, then just password protect the default user account). It's easy to get past a password-protected user account though, so if she knows what she's doing at the PC she might already know how to get past this or she may work it out. An easier way would be to password protect your screensaver (though simply rebooting the PC will get past this).

If any of these sound like they're what you want, I can provide more info or you can look on have a search for yourself with the appropriate terms.

edit: Just noticed your Web programming thread, so I imagine you were being facetious about banning your daughter from MSN

Doesn't work for me. I then spend hours working out ways of getting around it

Hahaha problem solved then

Either uninstall messenger, or disconnect the internet! (Or, if you're really cocky, find out her password for MSN and change it... That'll fix your problem).

Thats just to be more concentrated because some forums are so cool you cant just leave and come back later

Haha, yeah!

I'm always at risk here. I'm too lazy to type my password in every single time I sign in, so I tell it to automatically remember it for me.

i dont mind her using MSN, in fact we as parents would much rather she spent her evening with us in the house rather than hanging about god knows where with her friends...14 year old girls seem to be a trouble magnet, if you know what i mean...

i just wish i could get some kind of time-out thing going. She uses it for an hour or so then it cuts off...

You need to install an internet cafe style system in on the computer then each month you give your daughter say 20 tokens and she can only use the internet for 20 hours a month, that way she can either blow all the tokens at once or ration them out. :)

Just remember to keep the tokens safe!

Spec....
