The Mustang sucks as car yet is arguably one of the most popular sports car platforms in the world....
The 1969/70 model wasn't, since its release coincided with the Mustang's sales going into freefall up until the Mustang II came out.
 
The only bad car is this car.

All the others could be lived with, this is outrun by a golf cart.
 
I love it, it's a legal, small, economical commuter car.
But it can only go ten miles an hour! My toy battery powered jeep could've outran it! I could run faster than it!

Although, paying a nickel to fill up at the pump must be nice.
 
I have to disagree. The 1969/70 model is the most desirable, expensive, and arguably best looking Mustang.
You can't disagree with how much the car sold, which was what determining what "the most popular sports car platform" is related to. That's assuming you can related popularity with quality in the first place

Have you ever even been in one? I must say the are very comfortable, roomy and ride quite well. I've never been behind the wheel of one though, unfortunately. They are much better than anything else Ford put out up until the New Edge, maybe even later.

The Bugatti Veyron is a dreadful car. But it goes 250 mph+. That just proves speed doesn't matter.

When referring to the car selling new years ago, I see your point. But think about it... The mustang now had competition, starting in 1967, when sales fell. The Mustang always sold better than its competition, but some buyers were driven towards the competition, such as the Camaro, which without a doubt had an effect on Mustang sales.

Now, in the collectors market, Mustangs are very popular, which doesn't matter about how many were sold brand new. Ford sold a lot more coupes than fastbacks, but you see fastbacks more often nowadays for example. My point earlier was that even though the 69-70 Mustangs didn't sell as good back then, they are loved by collectors much more.

There's also kits that convert coupes to fastbacks now, so anyone can have them.

Though that depends on the year. Fastbacks sold well in the late 60s.
