Quick question on why only rolling starts.

They're all rolling starts, though we do get some double-file ones. I can't remember if it was an actual explanation, or just speculation, but it could be performance-related as all the cars launching at the same time would grind the framerate to a halt. Again, I don't know that as a fact.

I read something about frame rate. If you had a grid start, you'd have a 6-16 cars on screen, at once, at the first corner causing frame issues.

Yep. The main reason why PD removed the grid starts from GT5 (five)'s A - Spec mode was because people complained about the drops in frame rate and screen tear. The rolling starts mended the frame rate and made the tearing less noticeable/frequent. I wished PD had just lowered the resolution as an alternative solution. They also removed some flags and spectators as well to help the frame rate and tearing.

When you play online, your PS3 is only processing your car/physics, location and the location of everyone else. When you play single player, the PS3 is processing your car/car's physics and the physics of your opponents' cars.

My guess is because of the way the single player career is structured. Put the player in the back of a rolling start with the cars already spread out and let them try to get to first place within 2-3 laps. That's a majority of the races for single player.

I probably just suck but starting the player 10 seconds behind is stupid. But the time the race starts, the AI is tackling the first corner and pulls off.

I supposed its' also to decrease loading times. While you're watching the rolling start the rest of the track and parameters are still loading. Notice how at short tracks the rolling start is quicker than on bigger tracks.

Shame. I don't mind having to wait a bit more for the track to load for a standing start. Maybe this should be an option to turn on/off with an "increase loading time" warning.

Played a few hours of single player so far and only rolling starts. Is it like this for the entirety of it? Why? Why doesn't GT6 have any grid starts?
The GT method of madness is typically, no grid starts in one mode, no rolling starts in another mode. Just because.

If they removed rolling starts then they would have to remake their PS1 level AI.

Let us be real, the AI is primative at BEST.

What about 16 player online??? Rolling starts isn't the issue... It's the staggered chase the rabbit starts that is just silly...

i think the reason for rolling starts is that the game engine would cripple the PS3 if all the cars started at once during a race.

Hell, just the smoke/dust from a few cars causes noticeable frame rate drops in rally races. Even having more then 5 cars on the screen in a tarmac race causes issues.

when is DriveClub GT7 coming out?

I don't think it's got anything to do with frame rates dropping, simply because they let us race online with standing starts. I think it's got more to do with trying to hide the shoddy AI. Imagine the carnage of 20 park bots nose diving into turn 1 right in front of you!

Now I want to see it!

Here's a summary.

Standing starts would kill the framerate as the cars are all closer together. The only fix that retained standing starts would've been to space the grids out further, but that would've made every track inaccurate.

Standing starts are possible online because your PS3 is only processing the physics of YOUR car. Every other person playing is having their PS3 process only their car, whereas on single player it's not only handling the physics of all 16 cars, but also the "brains" and pathing data of the 15 cars you're against.

Even rolling starts have framerate issues. Watch a rolling start on Brands Hatch with 16 cars, the framerate hits around 15FPS or so.

You're so wrong it's laughable. The only reason we have rolling start is because on standing starts we would all pass the AI in turn 1, then everyone would realize how broken of a game GT6 is. They need to have that head start to make it atleast somewhat of a "challenge".

Best way to launch a car is GT5/6 is flat out gas and launch. You can easy notice it in license and events where you start from 0.

That's because there is no low speed physics and proper tire physics.

That's why there's no (and will be no) drag racing. It would be the most idiotic mode in game - you flat out, spin all the way and start faster then everyone else.

That's why there's no standing starts.
