My friend and I are testing out the Skyline GT-R V-SPEC (R33) '97 and we're having a problem. We both put all the parts in our cars(not tweaked beyond that) and for some reason, my car has a quicker launch but his has the higher top speed. His car has 663hp and mine has 693hp.

The top speed number by his gear graph says 185mph (his car can reach a speed of 180mph) and mine says 177mph(which hits about 170-171mph). Only difference between the two cars is he used the Sports Exhaust, for sound; but we quickly found out that the exhaust didn't make up the difference.

Does anybody know why this is going on? :scared:

Are your gear ratios identical?

I'm not sure if it shows up on graphs but suspension settings will effect launch speed and top speed so it could also be that

The gear ratios aren't identical. We only bought the parts for our cars. We haven't went inside and tweaked them yet. Everything is set how the game gave them to us.

Sorry I failed at reading, just saw you stated that in the OP

Umm.. jeeze I really don't know.. are your BHP figures the same? he may have changed the oil while you haven't. I don't remember doing an engine rebuild on my R33 so I doubt it's that extreme

My bhp is 693 and his is at 663. Only reason is because he has Sports Exhaust; it adds/drops 30 bhp. When I put that exhaust on my car, the top speed number by the gear ghaph goes down from 177mph to 173. We also both have oil changes.

Also, these are both brand new cars purchased today from the dealership.

Wow.. I.. um.

I'm genuinely baffled..I can't for the life of me think of why there would be such a drastic difference between cars.

Though if I remember rightly, the GTR engine is hand built so there often are some that pull better on takeoff or have a higher top speed, maybe PD put a randomiser into the mix to represent this?

I don't know. I had honestly forgotten about that. There could be a randomizer that simulates cars being slightly different.

EDIT: If you're baffled by that, then check this.. Why does the 663bhp GT-R has the higher top speed and the 693bhp GT-R has the launch?

It may sound daft, but do you and your friend have different rims fitted? It's been said that different rims alter the gear ratios, which could be causing your different top speeds and acceleration.

Do you also both have the same aero parts fitted? That could be a factor.

Also double check that your vehicles weigh the same, just in case.

How about mileage, how much difference is there between yours and your friends miles driven?

Last thing I would do is that if everything is set identically but the cars still have different speeds, I would get the chassis repaired incase one car has more sustained damage than the other.

We both have different type rims. I'm about to change mine to the way he has his. We also both have the same aero parts on our cars. The cars weigh the same, and there isn't any difference in the mileage. We bought the cars, changed the oil and rims, added the parts without tweaking the parts, and hopped straight into an online room. The only thing different is the rims and the paint.

EDIT: Changing the rims to the ones that my friend didn't do anything. The top speed number by the gear box is still at 177. My friends is at 185.

How about the turbo's, are they identical? Engine upgrades the same(not the parts but the stages)? How about the ecu? Launch speed and top speed may be due to different drive train parts but the hp difference is definitely something in the engine department. Did your friend adjust the engine limiter?

The cars are the same. We both have everything bought. Nothing has been changed in any of the options. The only difference is the exhaust. That accounts for the 30 horsepower that's missing from his. That still doesn't account for why his lower horsepower car has the higher top speed between the two of us.

Gotcha. The launch speed difference is due to the hp difference. His higher top speed would indicate that he changed something. If they were identical in every possible way(except the exhaust) then your car should be faster. At least on the straights anyway......don't quote me on this though, I've be wrong an awful lot today on this forum.

So everyone knows i am the friend that is working on the R33 with Ace not one thing is different between our cars

I have not changed anything on the car let alone changed the gearing on the transmission now if u actually read the first post u would know this the only difference is the exhaust

See, like I said, nothing is different between our cars. We both purchased the cars and brought them straight online.

If you read my posts you would see that I mentioned the exhausts being different. There are no differences on the car's EXCEPT THE EXHAUSTS(I made that caps so it wouldn't be missed that its the only difference), one has more hp(DUE TO THE EXHAUSTS) and one is faster then the other. I'm all out of idea's so maybe someone will have more idea's then previously mentioned to figure it out for you fellas.

Eh, I understood what you said. He knows too. We're just frustrated in trying to figure out why the lower horsepower GT-R is the one with the higher top end, when mine is the exact same, but with quicker take off and a lower top end. It's baffling..

Perhaps try and purchase a new GTR and try again? it's not particularly expensive

Also @Drift - you need to use the Edit function rather than triple posting :)

Alright, I'll try that in the morning. I'm taking my mind off of this for the night and gonna get some basketball in my system.

You guys realize the OP is not talking about actual speed, just the graphs represented in the tuning section. Actual top speed of those cars with 663/693hp is well over 200mph. The 693 hp car has a quicker launch because it has more power. Why PD decided to put the graphs the way they did who knows..but it was probably the custom wheels, and changing back to standard wheels didn't change the transmission. But why does it matter? Just tune it to whatever top speed you want.

Yeah, but the problem that my friend and myself are trying to figure out why, with the customizable transmission that hasn't been touched, is the 663hp GT-R have a higher top speed than my 693hp GT-R. I'm not only talking about that number that's by the gear graph. We were racing on Nurburgring and I told him that I was topping out at 170-171mph. He told me he was topping out at 180mph.

Sorry if I confused you guys about it.

It would be good to see the two power graphs ghosted over each other, that way you could see if the power levels from the different exhausts are also shifting the peak of the power band. Perhaps the more powerful exhaust is actually lowering where the peak power is in the rpm range, so that it is delevering less power at the top of the rpm range.

I'm going to let you into a secret. Your cars are different.

If you have two identical cars tuned in an identical fashion you will have two identical cars. If there's a difference either the cars weren't identical or the tuning isn't. GT5 tuning is "dumb" in the sense that this part always does this when stuck onto this. There's no randomising factor.

Yes, you may both insist that they're identical cars tuned in an identical fashion, but if that were the case they'd still be identical. If you fancy having them independently checked, find an adjudicator and both of you send your car to them.

Were you racing with boost on ? That would account for the different speeds.

Let me simplify this for you.

The cars are not identical, they have at least 2 different parts.
One of you put different rims on which caused a difference in the transmission
This led to different top speeds and transmission ratios
The ratios may or may not change back when you change the rims
Because you have different ratios the cars top out at different places because neither of the transmissions on either car, is tall enough to meet the needs of 650+ HP.

Solution: Adjust tranmission on both cars to appropriate top speed and the 693 hp car will be slightly faster in acceleration and top speed.

The answer is this:
One of you installed the gearbox before tuning the engine, one of you installed the gearbox after tuning the engine.

The gears are set when you install the 'box.
If you tune the engine after, you gain some extra rpm = extra top speed.
If you tune the engine before, the game compensates for the extra rpm and adjusts the gears accordingly in order to get the pre-programmed top speed.

This is the case with both fixed ratio 'boxes and FC 'boxes.

A reset of the gearbox (uninstall - reinstall) will put both cars at the same ratios.

Were they both bought new? If not, do engine & chassis rebuilds on both, then put the same exhausts & rims on both & make sure all other parts & settings (esp. transmission - reset both) are identical. They then must surely have the same performance...

Perhaps the more powerful exhaust is actually lowering where the peak power is in the rpm range, so that it is delivering less power at the top of the rpm range.

I don't know. I'd have to check that when he gets back on later.

I'll check it again today. We'll buy another set of cars and see if the same thing happens. If so, I'll send it to a third person to have them checked.

Were you racing with boost on ? That would account for the different speeds.

No, we weren't using boost. We checked the gears, I had quicker takeoff, but from third gear to sixth, his just ate mine alive.

So you're telling me my transmission changed because of the rims I added? Eh. But I know what to do to make my car faster, we just ran both cars like they were after the parts were added to see what we needed to tweak on the cars.

Well, I upgraded the engine before I added my transmission. I went in order down the list. I'd have to ask my boy when he finally hops back on the game today. But if that's the case, shouldn't we both have the same top speed right out the box without having to reset?

Were they both bought new? If not, do engine & chassis rebuilds on both, then put the same exhausts & rims on both & make sure all other parts & settings (esp. transmission - reset both) are identical. They then must surely have the same performance...

Yes, they was both bought new. I bought mine first. Then he bought his. We'll check back into this later today. I appreciate all the answers.

it might be the ORDER you put the parts on, that does make a slight difference in how they preform, you'll notice sometimes after putting all parts on and before making any changes to the settings you set gear ratios to default and they will change. why some tuners on here when they list their set-ups state "set to default" before making changes

I went down the list, top to bottom. Some cars I'll go from bottom to top. I'll try with another car today.

This.

The individual gear ratios in the transmission don't reset back to stock on their own, you have to go back and "restore defaults" to get the original "stock" numbers back. This happens when you add/remove power or change anything, like in JohnnyPenso's post! Go back and click on the "restore defaults" button for the transmission and see what happens.
