Dallara F192, just clean and simple lines, before all the silly bits started getting bolted on

So many interesting cars posted, so I thought I'd pick a few from maybe less well known avenues that invoked watershed moments in history.

Apologies for the black and white, but its the only decent sized photo of both Big John Mazmanian's Willys alongside the Stone Woods and Cook car. An absolute golden age of drag racing.

Swamp Rat XIV, not the first rear engined dragster, but the one that made it work and forced the entire class to follow suit

So-Cal Belly Tank. A 296ci flathead built by Bobby Meeks pushed this car to 198mph in 1952.

Some better known cars:

"VLE", mk2 Escort works car. It was revelation in the rally scene and still a car often seen in competition today

McLaren M8. Built in various revisions to compete in the CanAm series in the late 60s, they utterly dominated the series until the Porsche 917 turned up with that monster flat 12. Sadly, the M8 was also to take the life of Bruce McLaren in 1970. This is an M8F

MP4/4. Had to be here didn't it ? Would have gotten 16/16 wins if it hadn't been for a certain Mr Schlesser...

One of my favorite all time race cars. Saitama Toyopet Green Brave Mark X. In the spirit of touring sedan racing, taking a rear wheel drive Camry, Super TAikyu Endurance racing(and winning). Genius.

Various Olds Cutlass cars that Oldsmobile raced before the Aurora body style. These were raced in both SCCA Trans-Am & IMSA GTO racing.

Moving on to Pontiac. First is the Grand Prix of Leighton Reese of SCCA Trans-Am fame.

Probably my favorite race car, the GTO.R. I owned the road car when GM announced that they were going racing with this car.

At the same time as the GTO.R was racing, Pontiac also went Daytona Prototype racing.

And to help with the lack of trucks in this thread. This Chevy truck is credited as being driven by Jimmie Johnson (yes, 7-time NASCAR cup champion)

And Walker Evans's Dodge Ram W150 desert race truck (pic won't display).

Mercedes W10 – The livery alone would be enough to warrant how I feel about this car, but the detailing of the parts where it matters most also makes it stand out for me, perhaps more so than any previous car from the current F1 team.

01-mercedes-benz-gims-2019-exhibitions-cars-mercedes-amg-f1-w10-eq-power-3400x1440.jpeg

Aston Martin DBR9 – The first-generation road car is still a stunner in my mind, so when it went racing in 2005, I was hooked. It wore the later Gulf colours well, but there's something about its debut attire that stands out more. Plus that n/a V12 soundtrack is simply astonishing.

Speaking of sounds...

Porsche 911 RSR (2018) - Whoever green-lit the new exhaust system for this variant of the RSR deserves a medal. I've never known one modification completely change the character of a car so much – this has to be up their amongst the all-time greatest sounding race cars ever to grace a race track.

images_porsche_911_2017_7_b.jpg

1997 BTCC grid – Can't quite put my finger on exactly why, but this particular batch of Super Tourers seems to resonate with me more than most (though the 1995 field comes a close second). Chassis, liveries, it all just feels right somehow.

Porsche 917 – The photo below speaks volumes about the diversity of this car. It might have only raced for 2 years before being effectively outlawed, but it no doubt left its mark on the racing world. I'd probably go so far as to say that this is my favourite race car of all time.

Kicking off with the most stylish rally car ever put on a stage, a car so cool that Cyberpunk 2077 basically had no option but to trace it in for the car in the trailer, a car I can't hope to do enough justice to as the Grand Tour boys did, the Lancia Rallye (037)

And I'm also a big fan of the current WRC Toyota Yaris, because huge vented box arches will never go out of style.

maxresdefault.jpg

Aaaand continuing that trend, here's the marveloussly ugly MG Metro 6r4. Its naturally aspirated 6 cylinder engine and steel body construction made it the safest of the truly competitive cars in group B. The internet is full of footage of hairy moments in these cars.

Gollop.jpg

I would also post a McLaren F1 GTR, which won Le Mans when I was 1 year old (bet some of ya feel old now ;)), but after La Sarthe GR3 in the daily races on GTS, I think we're all about sick of the sight of them.
