Many hours of practice. I've improved by about 5 seconds a lap in 5 years; mostly 2/3 hours a day of driving.

I can tell you that raw pace is 65% of someone's skill, being consistent is really important, my only GTP win was by more than 20 seconds, even though the second place had the Best Lap of the race, about 1 second faster than mine.
