I have always wondered what is considered good sportsmanship in these final-straight situations... thanks for your replies people, this is a great thread!

I never block at the end of a race; and none of you shouldnt either :)

Where is the grammar nazi now? LOL :P

Here is a video of it working in it's simplest form in an FMSC race at Indy.

http://youtu.be/HZGXLFd5rnQ?t=48m45s

The link should jump to the 48m45s minute mark.

I didn't do it that well and almost messed it up but still it was effective in that race.

I stand corrected, thanks for the link bro. Ill have to work on that myself

Wow, That was subtle and very clever....
I mean no disrespect here and i am only encouraging conversation about this topic, but isn't a technique like that exploiting the draft feature of the game. maybe we should encourage hosts to just turn it off.... otherwise, this could lead to everybody suspicious breaking in the last turn trying to be behind somebody so they can draft for the win?? what do you think??? good trick though in the video, i had to watch it twice to catch it... the ultimate shark may of been the orange car hanging back.... but fell short.

That's how I race and how I expect to be raced!

I've even pushed others to a win when in a group of cars just because I didn't have a clear line to pass and I've had plenty of other people do the same for me. You'll make a lot more friends racing with them as clean as you can.

First of all, drafting can't be turned off. The only settings are weak or strong and weak is the only setting that I ever use. Drafting and sling shooting by is racing and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Being in the lead on the last lap, especially at Daytona, isn't always the best place to be.

That race had the draft set to low and it was still to strong. If GT5 could fix the draft then nobody would need to use it in the first place.

Also, after 30+ minutes of racing people forget the move. Making it useful. I have seen many people do it and they are all good drivers, just takes the element surprise, and the driver behind you needs to be really wanting your spot.

That's how I race and how I expect to be raced!

In most of the series I race in (FMSC, ORCA, FIA, TOCA), almost all of the drivers use this move (some are really good at it).

I see no problems if someone is side by side with you on the final straight giving them a little squeeze towards the grass or wall, but only if you give them enough room to manouevre. Kinda more of an intimidation move than a deliberate dirty block. Ramming them in the wall is not something I approve of.

In the group I race with regularly, we usually don't have close finishes where this situation comes up. However if I am ever in that spot and someone is drafting me, I'll just hold my line. There's worse things in life than losing a close virtual race.

Amen. Sound advice.

If you want a "realistic" racing experience, one lane change would be allowed but it has to be safe, meaning you can't wait until the last millisecond to make the lane change and have a collision result. But in most online lobbies I've been in, just about anything goes and often the hosts are the worst abusers.

I was once in a shuffle race on SSR7 and was in second coming to the line (I let him through in the tunnel). When I pulled out of the slipstream to pass he/she made very little attempt to block me and I won by about a tenth. Have to dig the replay out to remember properly though. So I guess it depends on the user.

I just do handbrake turns over the finish line either if i am winning or last...its how i roll :)

The wishful thinking etiquette is one line change allowed. Its almost only a racing league thing unfortunately.
In a Online lobby? Dont expect too much racing ethics there but if your feel like Good Guy Greg just change once your direction per situation.

What the final lap the final straight, winnings everything my friend, Block em , smash em , side swipe em into the dirt, whatever it takes don't let em in front.Ask yourself this question If they were so good they would'nt they have been in front of you by now?

And this is the kind of guy that makes GT5 online frustrating much of the time..win at all costs...no consideration or courtesy for fellow drivers. Basically drive like it's an arcade game and not a race simulation.

Note to Self: Instantly kick "rooster70" when they enter a room.

To be fair to, rooster70, it may have been a tongue in cheek kinda comment.

Nope, I'm serious. I don't play online that often... so I go for quality over quantity. If I see anyone driving like a kid, they get kicked.

To be fair, I'm going to take him at his word until he says otherwise and assume he's the type of person his comments make him out to be:idea:

To each their own, I wouldn't dream of telling you how to host your rooms. I just feel that sarcasm can be difficult to convey in a forum post. For this reason I prefer to give people the benefit of the doubt until they prove themselves unable to play with respect for others.

.Ask yourself this question If they were so good they would'nt they have been in front of you by now?

Ask yourself this question. If you were a better driver than the person behind. Wouldn't you have increased to gap to the extend that drafting was not possible?

This kind of person shouldn't be playing GT5, or any other sim racing games.

Block on the final straight, this aint church. Your trying to win the race!

True, and racing drivers sometimes block each other in order to win the race. They can't overdo it though or they will get DQ'd.

This. Exactly this. Skilled drivers know how to properly counter-attack after a long straight, and don't need to block at all cost.

If and only if the person behind me played out the whole race dirty/corner cutting etc or if they let me pass on purpose to get a draft at the end to win, I will try to block them. Otherwise, no.

As an unsportsman-like driver, you can expect to be treated as such, or simply kicked. But I suspect you just don't give a darn. And even the fastest and cleanest drivers will make mistakes, so the best overall driver in an online room will not always be the race winner, especially if they are tring to drive respectfully and fairly while others are driving like you.

See response above re: mistakes.

Sarcasm, joking, and double-meaning/double-enténdre are noted by "LOL," or smilies and other emoticons. Straightforward statements are taken straightforward by most resasonable people.

I could not possibly agree more. Manners and respect are extremely under-rated and a real sore spot in many online interactions. That's the cause for my tone with Mr. Bailey.

I just don't understand how anyone gets satisfaction or pleasure from winning a race with dirty, disrespectful tactics.

Yep most reasonable people would put a "LOL," smilies or other emoticon to portray humour, however many do not use them. I've seen many posts on here that were misunderstood.

I've no idea whether that post was serious or sarcastic, all I was trying to say was that I wouldn't kick anyone automatically solely based on a post made in here. That's just how I prefer to handle it.

On Topic: If in the lead on the final straight on the last lap (or on any straight or lap) I would use the standard one blocking move, if that didn't work out I'd just have to concede the position. As someone else has said, there are worse things in life than losing an online race :)

First off, I'm a clean driver and I race clean and fair, but this thread has me a bit mystified.

Most people want to race like they do in real life. Rubbing, blocking, bumping, etc is all done in real races to gain advantage. It's not nice and other drivers get infuriated by it, but it's there. You see it every time you watch F1, NASCAR, etc.

I know that if I was in a real race for any kind of decent money, I would block on the final lap if I had to, to try and keep the lead. In a game, it doesn't matter to me enough to block. I'll just let the faster car(s) pass me.

My question is... In on-line races, do we want to race like real life or do we want to race cordially? Personally, I would rather it be a mix of both. Having some drivers that push it a little too far is like real life and I want a racing experience to be a racing experience, not an easy pass, rules of the road type race.

I hope this makes sense and doesn't make me look like a dirty racer, that's far from the truth. I just don't think I'll ever see Alonzo or Button ever "let" someone pass them without a fight.
