Racism in F1

No doubt to mclaren for having drivers easily subjected to racial abuse.
 
Seems to be a problem in Spain.

Gerry Sutcliffe, sports minister for the British government, has demanded the FIA take action to prevent a repeat of the "sickening" racist abuse suffered by Hamilton.

Following racist abuse suffered by English footballers in Spain in recent years, Sutcliffe believes strong action is required now.

"Racism should not be tolerated and this is not the first time British sportsmen have been racially abused in Spain," he said.

I saw this in a paper in a car windscreen on the way home! Looked it up straight away.

It seems spanish F1 fans have been giving lewis some pretty bad racial abuse.

The FIA should definately dish out some sort of punishment for this.

Honestly, who cares? If this bothers Hamilton, he's really an idiot. If the fans are non-violent, why should they be punished?

and the "Hamilton's Family" costumes are mega lol.

Uh, why? Would you also be so pissed off if three of my friends and I showed up to race-day with huge eyebrows taped to our faces with shirts on that said, "Alonso's Family" ?

I don't see the problem with people expressing themselves as long as they aren't violent.

Yeah, neonazis are allowed to do that. Any responsible person would personally dismiss such crap, however. Nazi propaganda and misinformation has little to do with taunting. They're idiots, but get over it. When you pay so much attention to race and color, there are always going to be people that exploit it.
 
I pretty much doubt the fellas making fun of Hamilton are neoNazis.

I don't think it did really bother him; his official response being something along the lines of "I'm saddened about this as I really like Spain nad the Spanish people have always been very warm to me", which sounds like a load of PR tosh to me. It's not Hamilton that instigated the possible punishment - it's the FIA; Article 1 from the FIA's Statutes (taken from autosport.com):

So, as I understand it - and I could be wrong - Hamilton has nothing to do with starting proceedings against the Spanish races; it's entirely an FIA matter.
 
... and the Spanish never liked Hamilton. Never, ever, evah.

He was considered a good driver and a good teammate until he started equaling Alonso... he then became all that is evil in the world.
 
Those men have just permanently tarnished their country's image, both in the world of motorsport and international socio-political relations. Good job.

That's exactly what I'm saying. The people shouldn't be punished unless they're violent. If FIA isn't happy, F1 can remove Spain from its tour.

I sort of doubt it, actually.

This is a disgrace, but is there really any root of this, other than the alleged, 'preferred' treatment of Lewis Hamilton over Fernando Alonso? My local newspaper published the story, right after the Super Bowl results and Tom Brady-bashing. It is a shame because Hamilton did not ask for it, the McLaren team just wanted to see their up-and-coming rookie driver go for the big one. Alonso securing three in a row could have started a monopoly that could have seen the sport languish.

Edit: I see the root, but Hamilton is no Rooney.

Yeah, I remember they started giving the Australian tennis players some pretty severe stuff at the Hopman Cup qualifiers one year.

But they only started doing it once the Spanish players started losing.
 
It's pretty sad behaviour just because some Spaniards can't hack their precious Alonso being beaten... They need to get over it, and the FIA need to drop Spain from the race list for a year or two to give them a metaphorical slap on the wrist. Goes to show how childish some of the Spanish sports fans really are.

Granted, racism isn't limited to just Spain...so no one go picking me out for singling them out...just sticking to the subject at hand.
 
I think I'm gonna wait untill the actual Spanish and Europeans GP's before I make an opinion on wether they should be on the calendar or not. There was only 20'000 at the test session, usually theres around 10 times that figure at the Spanish GP. If they did loose the GP's thats alot of income going down the drain for the FIA.
 
Im not really surprised by this, after last seasons favoritism in Mclaren I could see how people in Spain are quite upset, I know there is no excuse for this behavior but I understand why its happening.

I think they hate Alonso over here equally as much.

Well now they are apart so everything is swell again.. see what the FIA make of this incident, they should ban the individuals but not remove the race from the calendar.

Not so, we Brits removed this type of thing from sport decades ago. It's just a shame to see that Spain is so far behind.

I actually doubt that the FIA would loose a single penny from dropping Spain from the calender, they have quite a number of non-European venues lining up with serious funding to step in. That Spain is the home nation of Alonso means very little to the FIA in the long term, they know that support can be fickle in that regard (German viewing figures dropped sharply when MS retired) and will look at the long term. The rumours of the FIA dropping a European event for another in Asia or the Middle East have been doing the rounds for quite a while now, with Bernie mainly threatening Silverstone and Spa, guess we can add another now.

You misunderstood me. I meant that Spaniards are very open about their feelings... thus, they're always in trouble for calling everyone names at all kinds of sports events. Samuel Eto'o, from Barça is always the target of most of these racial slurs, and whenever there's an Arab player, it gets worse. I remember during the football world cup, they were arguing why none of the players from France were white.
 
Racism has been present in soccer for years (and still is). Not surprised that spanish fans did this. I'm sure that italian fans (if Alonso were italian) would probably do something similar. Soccer fans in Romania (where I'm originally from) do it quite often as well.

The best thing Hamilton can do is ignore this sort of things.
