Rock, R & B, Rap, Jazz, Metal, Country, and Folk, all find their origins in the Blues.
Rock and R & B were bot "born" in the '40's and '50's
And as R & B is really just an off shoot of the Big Band music of the '20's and '30's, And Rock is just A faster version. You would have to say that technically R & B was probably first. If only by the amount of time it took someone to say "That I, IV, V progression would be smokin' if we sped it up a bit..."
If You're gonna "bust a cap" on popular music you really need to know what a "I, IV, V progression is".
Can any of my other musician friends help him out (the door).
Also, as your first post alludes to Rap and R & B being the "gateway" to drug use, indiscriminate sex, etc. I have to say you really don't read much do you?
Some of My favorite bands, such as Def Leppard, AC/DC, Aerosmith, and so on in that genre have had MANY heavily publicized problems with drugs and alcohol.
It's a "ROCK STAR" lifestyle problem. It's is not exclusive to Rap, or, R & B, or ANY other genre. It is a universal problem with taking a bunch of poor kids from the trailer park, and the ghetto, and nearly instantaneously giving them access to drugs, alcohol, and willing groupies in conjunction with instant fame and riches.

Also, give Jurassic 5 a try. Fun-keh beats and a real lack of posturing. 👍
And remember this: Rap and real R&B are not the same thing - no matter what the record companies try to sell you.

Do you see me complaining about the types of music I do not like?
No.

I know this thread is old, but I've been meaning to get this off of my chest...
The majority of rap music isn't about excesses of drug dealing, that is just what major radio and TV channels decide to play because it's what sells. Think about it. There's maybe 20-40 major rap artists who are popular enough to go platinum, let alone multi-platinum. Only an idiot would judge an entire genre of music by 30 popular artists out of thousands upon thousands. It's simply not logical. Anyone who believes rap is only about money, hoes, and clothes is a sheep and MTV is their shepherd. These people should be smart and actually try to educate themselves on what Hip-Hop is all about and not let MTV try and tell you what Hip-Hop is.
I've also noticed how some rock fans are almost militantly anti-rap. Every time I register and begin posting at a non-Hip-Hop message board, I look in the music section and there is always, without exception, a "Rap is Crap" thread somewhere in the latest five pages. I've never seen a "Rock Music Sucks!" thread in my entire time spent on the internet and if there are any, there aren't nearly as much as there are anti-rap threads, I guarantee you. I've also noticed a similar mentality in my interactions with rock fans in person. I think that these uneducated persons should get a life and stop ridiculing the opinions of others. It makes you seem like an obnoxious moron.
If anyone is interested in expanding their horizons, you can AIM me whenever you like and I can suggest some songs that are not fitting of the general stereotype of rap music.
