When I was shopping .308(I think), it was people warning about the old Brazilian surplus stuff that was blowing up rifles.

Couple of my coworkers went halfsies on a no-name .308, and they had same manufacturer stamp on their ammo! They were supposedly brand new, so they weren't the old 70's or whatever surplus, but I'm certain they got a bit nervous of the news. :D

I imagine it wasn't only the ammo that exploded...

Big score man. I walked by the ammunition section at Walmart, just as the dude was just about to unpack a case of .22LR. Guy there recognized me so he was nice enough give me a heads up as I was glancing through the pretty much empty shelves again. :D

They were just boxes of 325 for $14.27, but I ended up picking up the limit of 3 boxes for my homies.

Never seen a box of 325 before. They are Federals, and I wonder if it's a new package size to ease the shortage.

P.S. Do you guys think the Cheaper than Dirt is taking advantage of the consumers?

That's an $850 gun.

Free market says no. The customer has the right and ability to do two seconds on research to see that CTD is ripping them off. The customer also has the right to think "I don't like CTD's business practices" and not buy from them.

Personally, I want to try getting a stash of 30 round magazines and selling them during the next panic at an upmarked price. As far as I'm concerned, it's investing.

I see what you are saying, but I hate seeing a large retailer going full scalper mode, man. Very ugly. You are right, I hope people remember this, and shop elsewhere next time.

I figured the gun was a $1,000 gun, but it was even lower, eh? Again, that is a obscene mark up.

$1,000 is not unreasonable. Depends on the retailer. Some LGS's have a warranty or repair service that comes with the mark up.

Here's a fun question from The Firearm Blog. Are submachine guns obsolete? Civilian ownership is all but gone due to Federal laws restricting SBR's and select fire guns. Although modern pistol hollow-points are very good, they still don't compare to rifle cartridges. Most LE departments would be best served by carbines for SWAT and duty use.

A good candidate for an SMG replacement is the AAC Honey Badger.

What say you?

I say SMG's have been obsolete for a long time now, the small PDW's (And not SBR's) are better and superior than SMG's in every way possible.

Lets compare the H&K MP7 PDW with the H&K UMP in .40S&W/.45ACP.

hk_ump45.jpg

The MP7 has as much capacity in a much smaller, lighter package while having superior armor penetration and more range. The ammunition is also much lighter, its less likely to go through the target or several walls causing collateral damage and produces less recoil which is super awesome when firing full auto.

If I wanted a weapon the size of a small rifle then I'd get a small rifle, and not a SMG. If I wanted something to clear rooms with more oomph than a pistol but is much lighter and more compact than a SBR I'd get a PDW like an FNP90 or an H&K MP7.

By the way....

The Kriss Vector, I wouldn't mind having having one of these for myself.

There are still some SMGs you can get... As long as they're registered as transferable prior to May 19, 1986 with BATFE, and provided there aren't any state laws restricting them in your area.

As for them being obsolete, I'd say yeah for most uses. There's not a ton of things they do better than a short-barreled M4 - for military/LE application.

For me personally, I can't think of a reason to own an SMG other than for collecting.

Yes, that is a rip off. As another poster stated, that is an $850 rifle. AR's are ALL overpriced right now. When all this hysteria started, I knew a couple guys who sold their AR's for three times what they had invested into them. It's crazy with ammo right now too. Nobody has any. I remember the place I stop at always used to be sold out of 9mm and .223, and had a little .45 ACP, but now there is absolutely NOTHING except some oddball shotgun shells.

I posted earlier that I got some .22LR, but that's only because while I was checking out the bare shelves, dude who was about to cut open a new case that just came in gave me a heads up. Since then, it's back to out of stock on anything anybody would want. Before it gets better, it really got worse, because even the oddball rifle rounds are gone now.

I'm stocked up on the .22LR, but I bought the max limit of three boxes, because my friend was completely out(all three went to my buddies), but I'm gonna try to resist buying new ammo that shows up at stores I'm already stocked up on. I'm of the impression that scalpers & hoarders are causing this shortage, and I don't want to contribute to that. I'll buy .308s(brass, got plenty of steel cases), but the coveted .22 & .45ACP, I'll buy maybe a box or two(just to replace what I shoot), if any.

Edit - I forgot to add this. My buddy asked one of my coworker who's been hoarding .22LR, cheating the max limit at stores to do so, if he could buy some .22LR off of him. Now this guy, he's had 10,000+ rounds to start with, buying them aggressively since the shortage started, he says he'd got too much, so he's looking to selling them. My bud offers $25 for a brick. Answer: "I can get $75 online" :ouch:

My other coworker(he also have 10,000+ rounds, bastard lol), he tells me that the guy is posting them online now, two bricks for $90. I guess it makes the world go around, but ever since my younger days of buying concert tickets, I've learned to hate scalpers. It's one thing to buy low, sell high, but hoarding something people needs, buying them up in stores while other people are hard at work at their jobs, that's low. 👎

I understand that, man. Heck, you oughta leave a link to the website. I could deal with a few more .22 rounds. Haha. I have a decent stock up on .45, so I'm not too jumpy on getting it. At a local gun shop down the road, the guy told me I could get 100 .357 rounds that were hollow point for $80. I don't think that's a bad deal at all. I will probably get some very soon from them.

You must be getting the late end of it. It's been that way for months here. Now it's starting to be stocked up with other shells.

I have a box or two stocked away for myself, but I'd like to be able to take a range trip every once in awhile and I can't cause there's no ammo. The places that do have ammo want outrageous prices for it.

Yeah, don't get me wrong. I'm talking about people who are in it, not to shoot or stock up, but to make a buck on it. When there is a shortage, that's when they strike, and I have no good feelings about that.

Just to clarify, I know Z-Man has talked about stocking up on high-cap magazines, but that at least to me is totally different. Buying when they are cheap & abundant as investment, selling them when they are going high, I don't see anything wrong with that. Heck, as some of you know, I recently sold a high-cap Glock magazine for $99! My frustration is with those who are effectively clearing out the inventory of items in short supply at the local store(breaking the limit rules!), then you won't sell to your friends for small mark up, but wants over the double of what you paid. Not retail, but somebody you know.
I understand that, man. Heck, you oughta leave a link to the website. I could deal with a few more .22 rounds.
He wants full mark up though. AND(here's the best part), he recently discovered that ammunition is no standard shipping, so he can't ship them(he could, but won't)! So he has it online, but it's a local classified. I hope nobody buy them.

The key is going on the offbeat path for buying ammo. Stay away from the major retailers,(1) - they don't have it or (2) - it is overpriced. I got informed by a very good friend about this particular place down in Holmes county (Amish Country) of a little fly by night gun shop that is not known by too many. This Amish guy has it all ! I picked up a brick of 22LR for $30.00 ... nice. I quickly called my wife and kids. They went storming down there and each of them picked up a brick each as well. We all went back a week later and all 4 of us did it again. 2 days later in my route, I swung in there and picked up 3 boxes of .223. The wife went in there 4 days later and bought 3 boxes of .38. All of us have been going down there on a regular basis now. Now stocking up on 9mm, .38, .44, .45acp, .357, .223, 7.62x54R, 7.62X39, 12ga., 16ga., 17HMR, 7mm Mag., .308. I'm becoming an ammo whore  I got caught with my pants down on this .22LR stuff, I was desperately low. It's not going to happen again, I'll be stocked up for sure this time around.

A little something that got brought up this weekend concerning the ammo shortage. Is the Government hording ammo in lieu of all of this gun ban crap that is going on ? Since they can't control the arms movement (which is at record setting high btw), are they controlling the flow of ammo to the retailers ? Kind of like "well, they can have their guns, but they will have no ammo to fire" ? Possibility of a Government conspiracy ? Can't rule it out can we ?

Heh, I just shot one of these yesterday. Sounds perfect for your application. Smith has been building some real winners lately. The grip on the M&P's seems to cater to far more hands than the Glock, the single stack Shield is probably the best shooting deep concealment gun out there, and there's Apex Tactical parts if you ever want to splurge a bit for a better gun.

Do report back with your experiences. I'm very interested in the M&P series

Finally shot my M&P Shield at the range last week, and boy am I happy with the purchase. I've been used to shooting full sized pistols, and so I wasn't expecting the kick from the Shield. After that initial surprise, it was easy and really nice to shoot. I wasn't as accurate at 10 yards with my Shield as with the full size M&P, but I think I just need more practice.

Since my friend has a full size M&P9, I got to shoot the full size and the Shield back-to-back. The Shield, as it should, feels just like a miniaturized version of the full size. The Shield snapped, while the full size felt buttery smooth in comparison. Both grips felt good, and neither triggers are that great.

I end up putting about 50 rounds through the Shield, so it's still breaking in. One thing I didn't like was that the Shield slide spring was really stiff, hopefully that will loosen up a bit when it's all broken in.

I also shot a Gen4 Glock. I still don't like the grip, but it was nicer than the crappy range rentals that I've shot in the past.

I said everything's gone, but you can still get that in some stores. :D

Same here bro. While I luckily stocked up on the .22LR(on Black Friday :P), as soon as the inventory normalize, I'm gonna go for 10,000 rounds like the oldtimers around me. I don't consider .22LR a defensive caliber, but they are king when it comes to plinking. 👍

I guess it's possible, and it very well could be in their book as a potential play, but I honestly don't think that's possible. And if one of NRA backed politicians find out about it, it would damage the Administration's reputation greatly. I still think it's people overbuying out of fear.

Edit:

Love Glocks, but am not a fan of their grip. Although I've ever considered buying a Gen 4, but maybe the grips are more tolerable?

You might like the M&P a little more concerning the grip. Trigger ain't as nice as on the Glock though. But if you are really that concerned with having a nice trigger, that's why you've got that 1911 right?

I didn't know it stood for the caliber.

M&P probably does have nicer grip, but I just like the surefire reputation & the simplicity of the Glock too much!

I do love my 1911, but my next gun will be modern & compact for carry. If I had $600 for a handgun right now, I'd be looking for something like Glock 30S. :embarrassed:

Lucky me I've just been informed on when the ammo truck comes to Walmart. Every Tuesday evening. Now I know when to be there so I get first dibs. Likely going to buy everything they have. :mischievous:

What about the Five-seveN?

Expensive gun. Fun to shoot and can be even more fun with some work done on it. Ammo isn't expensive, just hard to find. Reloading spent brass is a next-to-impossible task just because there isn't a lot of data and because the cartridge is such high pressure.
