No evidence of Sony going this way? Sorry to disappoint.

"The module needed to play online, which had
been an extra-cost option, is now bundled with the standard $149 console. Sony expects to have 100 PlayStation 2 games available to play online by Christmas, up from 65 today. While revenues for online games are insignificant now, Microsoft and Sony say they expect that to change as online gaming grows in popularity.

"As with iTunes, people are more likely to buy in on a pay-per-use approach," said Andrew House, executive vice president for Sony Computer Entertainment America. As a gamer, he said, "I'm perfectly prepared to do microtransactions in order to buy additional game levels."

Sony will begin to sell downloadable game add-ons like new levels of play and additional game weapons within the next 6 to 12 months. "Downloads will become a substantial moneymaker for us," Mr. House said.

"Online gaming is the new frontier for us," Mr. House of
Sony said. "First arcade games went into the home. Then PlayStation 2 created more photorealism. Online gaming is the next quantum leap." "

That's been said in the NYTimes. Perhaps somewhat more reputable than other gaming mags - they do have a tendency to make stuff up.

Oh dear, now im a little worried then if this is the way Sony are going to treat the loyal customers :grumpy: I think though that over in the UK we wont see much want for this as not that many people are on Broadband (although many of people are going this way)

Man, some of you guys are really retarded! I mean, whining because Sony is trying to come up with a way to make more money? Well duh! They are a business ya know! If you don't feel it is worth the extra money then don't buy it! Simple. I, for one, can't see any down side to downloadable content. It's not as if PD is going to start selling GT's with 1 track and 10 cars and you have to download the rest. Don't be stupid! GT4 is already going to have 100 times more content than any other racing game, long before any downloads are added in. THAT is what you are paying the $50 (or euros, or whatever) for. The downloads are an ADD-ON! Now how, exactly, is the ability to add more content to an aging game a bad thing? I think a lot of you are just spoiled!

My feelings exactly.

Why is having downloadable content exploiting loyal customers. Get real. Sony are a business. They sell products. If consumers do not want those products they will go bust.

In the UK 25% of Internet users are now on broadband. Thats happened in less than 3 years. By the time PS3 is up and running Broadband will be the norm.

People pay £200 for a mobile phone that will take a picture. Then pay another £200 6 months later for a phone that will shoot video. Youngsters these days have lots of dispossable income. £10 is the eqivalent of buying 2 magazines!

Downloadable content is the norm now for mobiles, PCs and digital TV. Video games will be no different.

Its just a more efficent way of distributing games etc. :dunce:

I think they twisted KY's words... He wasn't talking about paying for downloadable content when he said that. They probably got it from the E3 '04 presentation when they were talking about the 3D crowds...
Agreed... those 2 presentations were completely independant of one another. And having watched Kaz's... he was not even talking about online functions when he referenced the increased human element in GT. he was talking about 3D crowds, pit crews, and the driver animations.

More careless journalism at it's finest.

Also the menu screen we saw did have a "Flea Market" area, but most likely this for the "Trade" function for past GTs. What wouldn't be suprising is that you could access other garages not only from memory cards, but also from the net. Then i'm sure people would sell their garages on ebay and the likes. But not directly from Sony.

Hold on guys, Im all for expanding games and if that Sony believe that this is the way to go then ok, tis that I wont be buying anything apart from the game. But what I am bothered about is what if sometime down the line say late PS3 or PS4 and Sony obviously want the games out for their console faster so they put pressure on developers like PD and they rush out their games, and then a bug is found and PD have to release a patch to fix the game bug, now this has already been done on X-box with Unreal tournament. Im just looking beyond the idea of downloading extra content. Im not saying that sont should never let the downloading of extra content happen (because they would never lister to me anyway) I'm just worried of what could come from this. :)

People Of Gtp! We Are Screw!
