Need to get a new fridge. Current refrigerator is running out of its life. Any thoughts or advice?

I am looking at a Samung 19.7 cu ft fridge from Best Buy. Any good/bad experiences?
Thanks in advance.

Well, it so happens I need a new one too :D
I'll keep a close eye on this one.

My only reservation with the Samsung is that it is a little smaller. Many are in the greater than 22 cu ft range. But the space I have available means that this is probably the ideal size.

If possible buy an A+ or A++ class! Its better for your wallet because it doesnt spend so much electricity, and its bettere for the environment:tup:!

Exactly why I'll be getting a new one, my old fridge is eating electricity.

I can check Consumer Reports for you if you'd like.

What configuration (if any) are you looking at - normal (top freezer/bottom fridge) side-by-side, etc?

Don't buy this one..

Half-assed drink dispenser (it works properly about 10% of the time), freezer compartment is rubbish dimensions, useless other features just for the sake of a digital display on the front, and doesn't seem to fit in my kitchen properly.. was £800 new, but we got for £300.. it looks the business.. but really, it's rubbish.. we ended up getting another chest freezer aswell.

Make sure it's cold, but no so cold that it's freezing because then it would be a freezer and you don't want that. Oh and make sure it can store plenty of beer.

As mentioned just look at the efficiency rating, I guess you could read about the model you like online. Bosch or Indesit are quite good.

^This.

Also make sure it's cold enough, otherwise is just an expensive cupboard. 👍

Most important thing:

Make sure it has a good warranty. First, buy a fancy one like Bosch. Then make sure it has a good warranty also. Because in this day and age there are no reliable appliances. Talk to people you know and see what they think of the customer service and warranty service they've gotten from the store they purchased from.

Don't buy a Bosch. It'll come with a LeBraun and they'll crap out right when you need them.

Before buying a side/side think about what you keep in your frige now. A leftover pizza box will only fit in a side/side on its side. I cuss mine almost everytime I try putting something in it. Hint: Go to LOWE'S and find one you like kick it like you would if you were buying a car (tires) then go buy it the next day (Scratch and dent sale).

My samsung took a turd, under warranty, which they don't honor. Took it back to costco for a full refund and a whirlpool.

He's actually looking at French Door models. You could fit an entire side of beef in that thing.

Also, my side-by-side fits pizza boxes alright (barely but fits). You must buy some honkin' pies.

And I in no way condone the kicking act. ;)

Extra-large pies do not, Large pizzas do. Sometimes I can squeeze the XLs diagonally, but you want to do that when there's just a few slices left.

Our old GE has a 40/60 split to facilitate those lazy leftovers, and still hums along, although the auto-ice feature died out a few years back.

I bought a whirpool about 6 months ago, its has A+ efficiency, very silent and economic and with good spaces inside! Also bought an warranty extent from 2 years to 5 for more 60 euros! Gave almost 500 euros, it has capacity for 311 liters!

EDIT: Now that i look to the picture, the fridge looks smaller...:indiff:

Thanks for everyone's input. Very helpful and good to know.

I'm looking at a French door because it sounds fancy and b/c I have limited space in the front that prevents wide opening. Side-by-side does not work due to the layout also.

So far, I have heard great and terrible things about Samsung fridge. I may just take a gamble. Best Buy has a decent sale right now. I have no requirements on interior configuration. I generally just fit what I have to the fridge.

Great to see this forum is so useful for non-GT5 stuff.

Omnis, your response is excellent. i think if they add a CP3 ice maker, they should be good for the next 10 years.

Why would a french door work for you while a side-by-side wouldn't?

The layout of my kitchen. Right now, the old fashion has the hinge on the left side and the door swings out into the island (just touching the island). The fridge is next to pantry so there is no room on the other side.

A side-by-side would mean that when I open the right door, I will have to step around the door to get access inside. Does that make sense? I cannot quite explain it well in words. I have to draw a diagram and I do not know how.

Yeah but the french doors open just like a side-by-side. Unless you mean the top doors would swing over the countertop since they'd have the necessary height clearance.

The kicking act was meant to be taken to be "funny" should have said that. I work in the food service so I prefer a fridge with room. My fridge is 17.5" wide with the freezer being 10.5" wide with ice maker so if not for my chest freezer I'd be up the creek because I can go to the store to get a loaf of bread and come home with $75 worth of food. I love food!

Omnis, yes I thought about that. But the way the layout is, when I want to get something in the fridge (not the freezer), on a side-by-side, I would have to walk to the left of the fridge and open the right side. Whereas, with a french door, I can open the left door to get things out.

Since the side-by-side left door is the freezer and that is the more convenient and common door to use, in my particular layout.

My rationale makes sense?
