Windows Installer is the program that installs a program onto your computer. Is there a way to reset it, or reinstall it, or something like that?

Every time I log in to an account on this machine windows installer comes up like it is going to install something, but never installs anything. It doesn't error or anything either. After a few seconds it goes away.

In XP it is start and all programs and then what? That will remove it from the startup processes and it isn't in the startup folder under all programs. Is there a way to actually re-install the windows installer program itself?

After I log in my desktop will come up and everything on the task bar will be loading when this installer window pop's up. It is up for about 5 seconds, but never seems to install anything and it comes up when anybody logs in. I looked it up and it told me to reinstall and I don't remember how. Here is what the installer window that comes up looks like -

Windows installer isn't in the start-up folder so I can't delete it. I was wondering if there was a way to actually re-install the program itself, like re-installing a piece of software.

Windows installer wasn't my problem, but you can reinstall windows installer by going to your windows folder and installer, I think.

or you could use the registry: hkey_local_machine/software/microsoft/windows/current_version/run and look to see if anything *odd* is there....just for future reference

The registry wasn't my problem. I just hadn't fully installed a program.

That what I thought your problem was, I just didn't want to post anything that might mess you up more.
You can also take care of that by going Start -> Run, typing in msconfig, selecting the startup tab, and then looking for installer.exe or soemthing along those lines.
I can't completely remember what I did to fix that problem when I had it, but it was something along those lines.

I found out what aplication it was by hitting control alt delete when the installer window came up.

None of these ways are working for me. I think cardude's way could have definately worked, except there's no "Installer" folder in the Windows directory. Would you be able to re-locate where you found Windows Installer and direct me where to go?

Yeah, I read somewhere at one time that you copied the folder location of windows installer and then in there, there is a choice to reinstall windows installer, but for the life of me, I can't remember what folder windows installer was located.
Jimmy, what exactly are you trying to do? You don't want to remove windows installer, you won't be able to install anything, if you remove it.

No, I just want to stop it from popping up all the time. It's exactly the same situation as you had. I'd just like to know exactly how you fixed it, so I can do the same.

Oh, I see now. To tell what it is, click the X in the upper right hand corner either immediately after it pops up or after it starts to install, I don't remember exactly what time I clicked the X. If that doesn't work, quick hit CTRL + ALT + DEL after it shows up. It should show the program. Then re-install that program. Most likely it is either Quicktime, I - Tunes, or Windows Journal Viewer, if you installed it from Windows Update. I don't have a PDA by the way, so I have no use for WJV.

Isn't there a folder somewhere? It pops up after I open anything. Folders, My Computer, anything. It's just really irritating, and I'd like to know how to re-install Windows Installer, not the program it's trying to install. I don't exactly understand what you're saying sorry.

I don't think that reinstalling the Windows Installer program is going to make any difference. The problem in these sitautions is usually that a program has been abandoned by the user during installation or it failed part way through installation for some reason, so the program thinks it can finish it's installation when Windows reboots.
Is it telling you the name of the program it's trying to install? You might be able to do a full install of it and either leave it on your PC or uninstall it after it's installed. But I don't know if it's a program you've downloaded that won't install for some reason or something you've tried to install of a CD you have.
You might be able to get some sort of Windows Registry cleaner program that will tell you what programs are trying to load on boot and you can clean them out of the registry so they're effectively uninstalled.

I didn't have your problem. That window only showed up for 30 seconds after I would logon. It then went away until I logged on again. It sounds like you have another problem. I fixed mine by reinstalling I-Tunes, because I-Tunes hadn't fully installed and was trying to install on startup, or something. I don't know what your problem is. Do you have a virus. Otherwise, click the X and see if it tells you the program it is trying to install.

Well I get that same pop-up window you get, but I get it whenever I open up anything. It pops up for like a millisecond. It's quick. But it does get annoying. I don't know what it is. I've tried pressing cancel, etc. It's just weird. I can't really explain it any better, it just pops up whenever I open up a new folder, My Computer, etc etc etc.

I already fixed mine, a long time ago. Now we are trying to fix Jimmy's computer. I am not sure. What program would run any time you open a windows feature. That program is either installed incorrectly, or it is partially installed. Do those windows pop-up when you are in safe mode? What OS do you have?

ummm, that doesn't guarantee anything. Now that you have switched to firefox, you shouldn't get any more. There still be some remaining spyware from your IE days. I'd check if I were you. XP is very vulnerable to spyware.Jimmy Enslashay
