I was just reading Gamespot's review on this and they made a great testament about this game. They said, not in these exact words, that the coolest part about the game is the atmosphere. The constant feeling that you shouldn't be where you are.

I think that's how I felt about the game but I couldn't put it into words. :dopey:

Sorry to come in and not read all the past pages. :( :guilty:

I have a question though...

Do you all know if there is any exclusive content in the PS2 version of this game?

I own the gamecube version and it rocks.
Everything about it was awesome and overall it's one of my favorite games ever made. :dopey:

Honest to god, this game is one of the best made for this console generation. 👍

So about that PS2 exclusive content... Does anyone know if there is any and if so, what is it?

Thanks.

Edit:
btw, I finally got all "5 star" ratings in the Mercs mini-games and in-turn I managed to get the HandCannon with infinite ammo. :trouble:
You all think the Killer 7 and broken butterfly are powerful?
Just wait till you get the handcannon, it's incredible! :trouble:

That's how I felt when playing Silent Hill 3, my favorite "horror" game so far. I hope RE4 changes that though. :D

And Kent, I know there's exclusive content on the PS2 version, but I can't remember exactly what it is.

Good to know, Kent! Was it hard getting all five star rattings?

Edit: Oh, the max Fire Power ratting on the Broken Butterfly is 50! On the Killer7 it's 35! What is it for the "Handcannon?" What does it look like? Thanks!

As far as I know, it's no different at all. But, there is a thermal scope for rifles that I didn't get on the PS2 version. I'm using this RE4 walkthrough http://www.planetdreamcast.com/residentevil/residentevil/re4/walkthrough.htm as reference.

OK, I just got done testing which standard 9mm ammo pistol is the best. It's the Blacktail. Here's the results. All pistols were rated at full power ups, including their "specialty" item. Note: I didn't include the standard 9mm since by default that is the worst 9mm in the game.

The Blacktail wins, hands down, for me. It has great stopping power, high capacity, not the most expense pistol to buy or power up, it has the fastest firing speed and doesn't recoil as much as the others for a quicker follow up shot. The Mataldia was terrible. The burst function blazes through ammo too quickly for it to be a good choice.

Punisher

Fire Power = 1.9
Firing Speed = .33 seconds
Reloading Speed = .83 seconds
Capacity = 28 rounds (Rounds penetrate up to five bodies)

Red9

Fire Power = 6.5 (Still requires two shot kills on Ganados)
Firing Speed = .40
Reloading Speed = 1.67 seconds
Capacity = 22 rounds

Blacktail

Fire Power = 4.5 (Two shot kills on Ganados)
Firing Speed = .27 seconds
Reloading Speed = .83
Capacity = 35 rounds

Matilda

Fire Power = 2.5
Firing Speed = .47 seconds
Reloading Speed = .87 seconds
Capacity = 100 rounds (Its specialty)

Hey guys...

Regarding the 5 star ratings... Not too hard once you really learn how to play the merc's game. 👍

According to the brady game guide the HandCannon has this setup for power levels.
1) 30
2) 35
3) 40
4) 45
5) 50
6) 60
Exclusive: * 99.99
(infinite ammo)

The "HC" makes the broken butterfly look and feel weak. :trouble:

Infact, I can walk through the game super-easy with the handcannon.
I'm talking, the chainsaw mad-men go down in very few shots (I want to say 1).

The key to getting that full 99.99 power level is having the infinite ammo. 👍
And trust me, it may seem like having the infinite ammo wouldn't make that much of a difference- but it does. :trouble:

Also, the Blacktail was my handgun of choice (other than the hc).
But in defense of the standard 9, the exclusive upgrade gives you 5 times the chance of a critical headshot. 👍

Still not great compared to the blacktail, but atleast it will get you through the game if you want it to.

On a side note:
All this talk has made me want to play RE4 again!
I have such a setup too.
Infinite Rocket Launcher
Infinite Tommy Gun
Infinite HandCannon
Blacktail (fully tuned)
RiotGun (fully tuned)
Semi-auto Rifle (fully tuned with all scopes)
OE 9mm (fully tuned)

With the largest case and no need for health I'm just breezing through the game.

If I run through it again that will make my 5th time.

Of course, my skills my have died-off a bit, but earning 5 star ratings on the mercs missions will teach you some hard-core techniques to the game.
Plus, once you know the game really well you don't have that fear of death keeping you from running.

And just to elaborate on those mercs missions...
They were fun as hell!
I loved playing them and after time I found them to be more entertaining than the game in some ways.

Oddly, I expected leon to be the weakest of the group because of his limited armory.
However, it was the opposite after I got my skills up to par.

Basically, I got 4 stars on each level.
The first with leon, then as each new character was unlocked I used that one for the next level.

Once all 4 levels were unlocked I started in reverse... Using Wester for the final level first I would get 5 stars, then use Hunk, then Krauser, then Ada, then Leon.

Sticking to 1 level and learning it well, then getting all 5 star ratings on it made things easier.

After getting that level cleared with all 4 at a 5 star level I would move back to the previous level and do the same thing.

By the time I got back to the village level Leon took the overall highest score of any level (I will check out my scores sometime soon and then post them).

He seems to have a great balance as a character (unlike wester and hunk).
Also, Krauser's bow is badass... Not only does it kill most opponents in one shot, it also floors the big guys with one shot so that even if you don't kill them you atleast knock them over.

Oh and finally, my last piece of experience for this post...

When doing the mercs missions, take the time to just run through the level as far as you possibley can and explore as much as possible.
Eventually you will figure out which places to make you stands and for how long you can make a stand there.
It will also give you a good idea of where the pickups are and how to take down the stronger enemies using the environment to your advantage (explosives or just hit-n-run techniques).

If you all have any questions I will be happy to help. 👍
I've got a deep knowledge of the game and a strategy guide to back me up for anything I don't know. :sly:

(Man I loved this game... Easily the best RE ever and probably one of the top games to this date)

Edit:
Forgot to mention... The handcannon looks like a huge magnum revolver (something like a .357 only really big... will try to find a picture :D )

Didn't find a picture but did find this...
http://faqs.ign.com/articles/582/582831p1.html

Also, it seems my memory wasn't as good as this guy's research...
The Handcannon takes out prety much everything in 1 shot.
Of course, that depends on where you shot what...
Ganados taking a head shot will need two since a head shot will open up the parasite, but 1 to the chest will kill him outright (since the parasite doesn't come up).

El Gigante (2 according to this guy)
Major bosses... 1 to 3 in most cases.

Overall, I just can't tell you how powerful the thing is... You've got to work towards getting it and then experience it yourself. :trouble:

Thanks for the link and the tips, Kent!

I soon as I read the link you gave, and read the 50 Magnum part, I knew it had to be Smith & Wesson's new 50 Magnum pistol. It came out about two-three years ago, which is perfect timing for this game. Here's a pic of it...
stmonster1103jcustom0bt.jpg

I just started playing again, and I'm already at the third level. This game goes so quickly now I know what to look out for, and what tactics I should use. I just got to the sacrafice and I dropped a frag grenade. Got all them bastiges, including the Red Monk who had a 15,000 Peseta pendent, while the rest had Spinels. I made about 30,000 pesetas right there!

Funny thing I hear about the Handcannon, it has the same power as the Tommy Gun? Or, can you do the same with that? That doesn't seem right. How powerful is that thing? I want that more than anything. Well, the hand cannon, too. I bet a the Handcannon and the Tommy Gun are all that's needed to play this game.

Oh, I have a new technique for the El Gigantes. Shoot them in the head with the Killer7, that is full up, and then shoot the plegas on their back once they bow down on one knee. Done. No more running up and slicing at that stupid thing!

Other tips I've found out...

Save the rocket launcher you get in that one room in the castle and used it on those flying insect things. Actually, when you come into that one huge round room with the insect nest, shoot the nest with the rocket launcher. It gets completely destroyed, and you can collect all the "jewel eyes" that are on the ground.

In the room with the falling ceiling, throw a flash grenade to kill all the plagas first, then shoot the red lights out.

At the end of the mine cart ride, after climbing up, look for a pile of bones. In there will be all the gold from the people you killed while on the ride. Look for the "take"sign.

When the truck comes after you, just before entering the castle, and after shooting it down, walk near it and collect the gold from the people it ran over.

I've been playing the GC version a while now. The hardest part about getting that Handcannon is beating mercs with the main character. Once you unlock a character in Mercenaries, it's a lot easier to unlock the others since our hero has a crappy set of weapons. Patience is key to getting a high score with him.

Don't buy the riot shotgun. It just sucks. The other shotguns get better bonuses and are better for the most part anyway.

Of all the pistols, there really isn't one that stands out. The Red9 has got some serious style points and can do 5 damage per shot (remember the ROF of pistols!), but the other pistols have advantages, too. The Punisher, for example, can shoot through multiple enemies and even shields. When you're out of shotgun shells, this is extremely useful.

The Broken Butterfly beats out the Killer 7 any day. But they both look cool. 👍

Any trucks you see in the game can be taken out with one or two shotgun blasts. Otherwise, they're a real pain to take out.

Later in the game, the suplex move (a melee attack; aim below the knees and you can do it) will crush an enemies head with a high percentage of success. Sometimes, however, those darn bugs pop out. Usually, though, it kills outright. It's not as good as the kick, though, since the kick is effectively a shotgun blast that pushes multiple enemies out and back.

In Mercenaries, every character has a different attack. Just be sure to aim below the knees of your enemies with a pistol or use a flashbang.

Hiya! :D :O  Meow! (='.'=)

There is a difference between the PS2 and GC version. The PS2 have the following exclusive:

Ada Wong's "Seperate Way". Five missions of Ada and you get to do what she have been doing while Leon was playing around.

New weapons such as the P.R.L 412 Laser Cannon and the Gunpowder Bowgun

New unlockable costumes for Leon and Ashley

Supports Progressive Scan, 16:9 Widescreen, and Dolby Pro Logic II

For PREMIUM EDITIONS ONLY: Addition of The Making of Resident Evil 4 DVD, Limited Edition "Ada Wong" Laser Cell(I LOVE IT), Brady Games REsident Evil Proglue, and this cool metallic CASE!

(I got these information from my RE4 Premium Edition box! Unopened due to Soul Calibur III absorbing my soul....)

Hint: A friend of mine ask me a funny question after I got this game.

"Who do you think rang those bells while Leon was fighting all those Garnados in the beginning of the town?"

I am guessing Ada! :O DARN IT I AM GOING TO OPEN THIS GAME NOW AND PLAY :grumpy:

I've gotta know... What are the new exclusive costums for leon and ashley?

In the GC version they are the Raccoom (sp?) City police dept. uniform and the "pop star" outfit for ashley.

I didn't really like the Pop Star outfit that much but it was a nice addition none the less.

So, what are they if any of you know? :D

So far, all I have are the same outfits you just described. But, I do know, from PSM Magazine, that there's a suit of armor for Ash and a '30s gangster's suit, scarf and hat for Leon, to go with the Tommy Gun.

I have yet to unlock any of that stuff. I have yet to do Ada's thing, or the timed merc runs. I'll get to it, after I play through my second run of the game. I'm at the end of level 4=1 at the big and scary 'Right-hand-man' boss fight. Do you know if it's worth the 30,000 Pesetas to buy a rocket launcher to off this guy? The first time I played RE4, I got the hell out of there without fighting him much. I didn't have enough ammo, nor a gun powerful enough to fight him. Meh, I'll figure it out by playing the level over, and over and over again until I figure out what's the best thing to do, but any tips would be greatly appreciated! 👍

I'm not sure I know which boss you're talking about.

Could you describe the fight that occurs because I am sure I could give you some advice on how to win the battle without depleating your funds or ammo supply.

Details on how the boss fights you and what he looks like would probably be enough.

Sorry I don't know exactly what you're talking about but I look forward to helping as much as I can. 👍

So again... any description you can give would help greatly. 👍

Hiya! :D :O  Meow! (='.'=)

I think I know which boss you are talking about Solid Lifters. :O

You are talking about the boss that can attack from above the room and you have to press two buttons to dodge it. That one nasty boss that is trying to kill you while the elevator is coming down.

Buying the rocket launcher and shooting him with it while frozen is certaintly the easiest way to beat him, but at a price. What I would do is use up all the gas tank to freeze him to kill down time. When there is no gas tank left, I would recommend run down that tunnel back and forth while dodging that boss's attack from the above until that elevator shows up. :O 👍

Thanks for the help, guys, but I did what I said I was going to do. I just played for an hour after putting my boys to bed. Since I got the chance to play some more, I figured it out for myself.

Kent, MA just described the monster I was talking about. The one you gotta freeze. I figured out what MA suggested on my own. I bought a rocket launcher, dodged his attacks and froze him the first chance I got. Then blew him to pieces with just one shot of the rocket launcher. Done.

I would've never had fought him otherwise because he wastes too much of your ammo. Plus, I needed that pendent you get for killing him for the crown. I made a lot more money then without it. The pendent alone was 12,000 pesetas, plus I got a extra 11,000 once the crown was complete for having the extra pendent. That makes a total of 23, 0000 pesetas for that one pendent! That means I wasted only 7,000 for the rocket launcher. But, it wasn't a waste, now was it?

You have to fight the bastard at some point, no matter if you just want to dodge his attacks, until the elevator shows up, or kill him for the pendent. How valuable is that ammo later on in the game? A LOT! Plus, how much money did I make keeping, then selling, all those R+G+Y herbs I would have used, since either fighting or running from this guy is going to hurt you! With the rocket launcher, it's just freeze him once, and blast him once, and that's the end of him! So, that 7,000 wasn't a waste by any means! It was money well spent!

Oh, my El Gigante method didn't work on those two El Gigantes you meat up with in the furnance. As soon as you think you've got this game figured out, they throw you for a loop! Sneaky buggers!

Ah, I see.

I wondered if that was the boss... "Verdugo" I think the name is. :trouble:

You did it just right.
Spending the money on the launcher is certainly the best way to go for him as well as many of the others in the game.

In fact, on my first time around I was constantly buying a launcher and keeping it for the unexpected boss battles.
The Launcher may cost a bit, but regardless of what boss you are fighting, it seems like the ammo used is always more costly than the launcher.

I would just avoid using the launcher for anything other than bosses though.... Well, you can use the launcher on that one circle of cultist as to take them all out the easy way (since there is a merchant right around there you can replace the launcher immediately too).

Sorry I couldn't get in and help out sooner but it seems you managed on your own just fine. 👍

Don't be shy about coming back as you make progress though. :D
I'm sure you will encounter a boss pretty soon who will really stump you. :ouch:

Also, this just came to mind, but when you run into Krauser and end up getting into the real fight with him, come back and let us know... He's one of the few bosses that you shouldn't use a launcher on.

I'll have the story for you if it's needed when the time comes.

I'm now at the island, which is the start of level five. I remember the first time I played through that this part is hard! So, I decided to do Ada's Assigment, to earn the Tommy Gun for the infin ammo, but it starts off in the same place, and is a lot harder than the regular game! Two hits or whatever, and Ada dies! Plus, no herbs to improver her health, and very little ammo! I hope it gets better, from here.

JJ machine gun guy is too hard to beat. I shoot him in the head 8 times, and he still wont go down. And that's with the rifle! I mind that, if I only had a decent amount of ammo available! I can't make it past him without dying.

So, I was wondering, to I get the ability to upgrade any of my weapons? I noticed I don't earm Pesetas, so I guess the answer is no. But, I'm still asking, because I could use some good news!

Sorry to say it, but you don't get to upgrade any weapons in the assignment ada game. :(

I may be able to run through assignment ada again to jog my memory of strategies to beat the levels... However, one thing I do remember is that I was not sparing with my rifle ammo.

I think I used the rifle to take down as many opponents as possible for the first few attempts.
After that I started learning which guys to take down with the rifle from a distance and which ones to put the pistol on.

Also, you may want to try that technique because you might be suprised what kinds of ammo they will give you when you use the rifle.
It seems like the pistol ammo is most common but rifle ammo does come to you at times. 👍

And of course, the biggest key to making it past those crazy gatlin gunners... Do your spy work for a few run-throughs, then learn to kill all the baddies up to a certain point and from there do sniper work on the big guys from a distance that will let you avoid alerting them to your pressence.

I know it's hard but I'm sure you can do it.

Just remember to experiment with what guns you use and where.

And most importantly, remember to be liberal about that Run Button. 👍
Ada's biggest advantage in many situations is her speed.

Run ahead, alert the weaklings, run back to a safe spot, take them down with the pistol as they come at you.

Do just the opposite for the big gunners... Slowly creep forward to that point where he still will not recognize that you are there, bust a few in him, then retreat if he sees you.

However, like I said a moment ago, try to avoid tipping them off that you are there...
Use the rifle from way long distance and in cheap trick ways... You don't need to win this fair-n-square. :trouble:

Good luck and if I get the chance this afternoon I will run through Assignment Ada just to get a refresher on how to beat it. 👍

Good luck until then.

Too many spoilers in here now, I'll come back to this thread once I have the game. :p

Thanks for the tips! I did just what you said, and beat the damn game! But it was not easy! I found it too stressful to be fun, but oh well. I'm glad it's over. The rifle was a great strategy. Popping baddies in the head, brought them down for good, so I could concetrate on the next guy. But, I ran into a little problem I had six grenades, and no ammo! So, I had to fight a hammer guy with grenades, and it did nothing untl the last grenade. I got a box of rifle ammo, and killed a JJ guy with five shots with it. Then, moved on to the next room that had tons of items.

Wesker battle took me forever! I aimed for his knee, but he almost never went down, so I died over, and over, and over again,. I finally beat him with no ammo and no health bars at all! Talk about a close one!

Well, I did it for the Tommy Gun, and I don't get it! I had to play a game called seperate ways, and played the entire game as Ada, I suppose. I'm on the first level, at the church and I have to ring the bell, but I'm stuck. I don't know how to take the round signia and leve out the door that closes when I take the stupid signia. So, what do I do there? Where's my Tommy Gun? It wasn't at the Merchant! I hope I didn't get screwed!

EDIT: Duh! Leon finds a green cat's eye, so that's what I had to look for. Found it; used it; done!

Sorry but now you've gone swimming into PS2 exclusive waters...
Gamecube's Ada game play is limited to "Assignment Ada."

Glad the post helped though. 👍

Now, for me... I'm headed to do some more Ring laps but tonight I plan on getting in some handcannon fun. :trouble:

I'll come back with my mercs scores as well. 👍

Till then,

Edit:
Mercs missions scoring records...
Level 1) 84860 (Leon)
Level 2) 66830 (Leon)
Level 3) 70070 (Hunk)
Level 4) 74980 (Ada)

However, the first two levels were the last two I worked for 5 stars on.
Also, just in case... The levels in order are...
The Village
The Castle
The Mining Area
The Bonus Area Not Found In Game

Btw, Even though he never pulled the high score, Krauser was awesome for this stuff and he was one of the easiest to get 5 stars with on each level.
Partly because he only has 1 type of ammo to collect, partly because he has a super powerful bow. :D

And for that matter, Ada was also a consistant killer. 👍

Once you guys get 5 stars all the way around try posting up some comparison scores. ;)
I'm sure you all can do better.

Heck, once I managed to go well over 90,000 but died just before it was time for the mission to end. :(

Hiya! :D :O  Meow! (='.'=)

I need to catch up to you guys! I can always say my Gamecube version of Resident Evil 4 is done, but not my PS2 version. :nervous: I am at the part where Ashley runs away from Leon after coughing up blood and gets caught by the turning wall. :yuck: Now I must face those giant insect stuff underground. :O I still remember the first time I went down there and you here someone running behind you!

OK, so GC version doesn't have "Seperate Ways" play. Ahhhh, another PS2 exclusive...

SW are missions you complete as Ada. I did the first mission already, which wasn't hard, but not quick and easy. You had to rescue Leon. You had to ring the church bell as he fought the villagers. Sound familiar, huh? ;)

After I completed Ada Ass (he-he), it said I could purchase the "Chicago Typwriter" in "Seperate Ways" from the Merchant for 1,000,000 Pesetas. But, when I went to the Merchant in mission one, it wasn't there! Bah! Like I said before, I hope I ain't screwed!

The Merc scores are unkown to me, since I only played once and only got a one star level. I didn't know what to do. I stayed on the roof, and just plicked-off villiagers. Heh. I just wanted to see what it was about. But, with that one star rating, I could tell it wasn't going to be easy.

Your strategies will come in handy once I can commit to it. But first, I need to finish my second game with Leon, and then Seperate Ways. Then, figure out where the hell my Tommy Gun went! :indiff:

Going to rent this game out next week w00t.
This game is huge. I doubt you'll be able to finish it with just a rental. But, I understand you may not want to finish it.

The exclusive Seperate Ways will probably be worth its purchase. But, I don't know how many missions there are. I'll finish it up, and report back later.

Just got this and played it for 4 hours straight. its good, not quite as good as all the reviews are making out, but very good none-the-less. Best Resi yet, but i think i prefer Devil May Cry 3 more, that was just more fun.
I also think that new camera is very annoying, im getting used to it but its to twitchy. Plus the way you have to fire your gun is very annoying, why cant you at least walk while aiming!?? its not hard especially with a pistol!
Thank god they havent made Ashley a pain in the ass like most gaming kids!
Oh and i like the TMP thats a kool gun!

You unlock the Tommy Gun when you finish Seperate Ways. You unlock Seperate Ways when you finish Assignment Ada.

Did you mean the Tommy Gun, or did you really unlock the Handcannon?

EDIT: Oh, you unlock the PLR 412 after you complete the Leon game on Pro level.

Darn. :ouch: I hate when I get brain fart! What I meant is I got everything so far except for the PLR 412.

I already started professional mode and stopped right after crossing the big bridge to the castle's land. :O In this mode, I find ammo drops pretty scarce. :indiff: I will talk about professional mode more when I get back again later tonight. :O

So,is this game scary? I don't really like scary games. Or is it just a bunch of shocks? I'm fine with shocks. I think...

Its not scary or jumpy at all (IMO). But i have gone urgghh alot, which i dont think i have done at any game before. i think its because its the 1st Resi with real(ish) graphics & everything just looks better.
But i am very hard when it comes to being made jump or scared, only 1 film & 1 game ever made me jump.
The game was Resident Evil2. it wasnt at any of the obvious bits, it was when i went into a room & a licker fell down from above, i didn't notice it at all and it really made me jump! lol. the stupid thing is the 2nd time i tried the game and i went in the room the licker started on the floor!?? odd.
