Welcome!

Rivalries in GT4 are numerous and some are more popular than others.

In the past we have had several threads about "this car .vs. that car."
Well this thread is where I would like to discuss as many of these match-ups as possible.

Post rival combos.
Discuss your favorite rival pairs or elaborate on why you like one car more than its rival.

All the information posted will be used for a good purpose and the more info I can get- the better. 👍

I look forward to hearing what you all have to say. :D
Thanks for any and all replies.

Now to start the discussion...
Two rivalries I've recently started a spot race for are the Impreza / Evo and the RGT / M3 GTR.
Feel free to talk about those rivals but please add onto this subject by posting other rival combos that I haven't mentioned.

BTW, does anyone know a good rival for the Aston Martin DB9?
Thanks again...
Later. :D

Subaru Imperza WRX vs. Mitsubishi Evolution

Just to start it off. ;)

Alpine 1600s vs BMW 2000 turbo.Both 72 models

Maybe even the Lancia Stratos, the Ferrari engined car deserves a shot but I cant get it balanced while braking, and I hate using asc :indiff:

Cage em`and tune them simolutaniously

Both takes snow tyres; the beam will have a slight advantage at higher speeds for ex. Nurb or even Capri
but the Renault rear engined will catch back on slippery or tight turned roads like Deep Forest or Chamonix

I enjoy their differnt but old school driving types 👍

Mitsubishi Evo vs Subaru WRX STi:

The Evo is faster on dry pavement, especially anywhere that isn't the USA, because it has AYC and a better suspension setup.

The Subaru is faster in the wet, snow, mud, dirt, sand, etc. because it has a more effective AWD system for inclement conditions.

I'm not really sure which one I like better, because I don't particularly like either of them, but if I had to choose, I would choose the Subaru, because it has a Boxer engine, and it isn't quite as overwhelmingly popular and overrated as the Evo. :)

RGT vs M3 GTR:

I usually prefer BMW's all the way, but the M3 GTR road version is just an ugly bastard child of the M3 and M5 with an engine that should've been more powerful. That, combined with the fact that Porsches are my "other love," means that this is quite a tough choice. :)

Like the M3 GTR road version, this particular Ruf/Porsche isn't the most handsome one (standard Carrera/Boxster-style 996 headlights), but it's better-looking than the BMW, and faster too.

If you were referring to the M3 GTR road version, Kent, I'll have to vote for the Ruf. But, if you were talking about the racecar (doubt it, since it's much, much quicker), then my vote would whole-heartedly go to the BMW. :)

This was a great idea, Kent... :) 👍 I've got a couple for y'all to ponder... :)

JZA80 Toyota Supra vs BNR34 Nissan Skyline GT-R

A5 Volkswagen GTI vs EP3 Honda Civic Type-R

Some interesting combos there. 👍

Also, I was reffering to the M3 gtr road version. :D
However, coming up with a good rival for the race version might not be that hard... Maybe the S4 touring car? :trouble:

Regarding the "BNR Skyline"...
First off, were those tech names for the Skyline GT-R R34 and the '97 Supra?
Well, I don't know what the BNR part of that means and therefore don't know what car it is. Although I must admit that I've seen one... Specifically the HKS BNR Skyline. :drools:

While I'm on the subject of things I don't know... What does JDM stand for?
Is it Japanese Domestic Model?
(that was just a guess)

Anyway, keep those rivalries coming.
As you all may have noticed, I'm doing a spot race right now that caters to this subject and everything we say in here will have some effect on the race. :)

Btw, this isn't my idea. ;)
This is just one of those things we all think about but only a few of us take the time to look into.
(Vedub#### has a write-up posted that addresses a few of these combos) 👍

That reminds me of a few he pointed out...
RX8 vs Nissan Z
Miata vs MR2

And finally...
I'd still like to hear any comments you all have regarding a rival for the DB9, I would also like to hear what you all think the best match for a '00 skyline GT-R would be. :dopey:

Suggestions for DB9 rivals:
- TVR Tamora or Cerbera Speed Six
- RUF RGT
- Mercedes-Benz E 55 AMG
- Lotus Esprit Sport 350

Other suggestions:
Isuzu 117 Coupe vs. Mazda 110S (L10A) vs. Nissan Skyline 2000 GT-B (S54A)

Honda S600 vs. Toyota Sports 800

Lotus Elan S1 vs. Ginetta G4

Looks like I missed one of the replies... An important one too.

Zonda 7.3 vs DB9 👍
Maybe though.

Seems like it could be rather one sided but I'll have to test that to see for sure.

Regarding the next one- DB9 vs Z06...
Might be a good match actually.
Not sure if the Z06 could really match it very well simply because the DB9 is 1400kg after a Stage 3 Weight Reduction.

Well I suppose testing will be the only answer for these suggestions.
Thanks for the creative work everyone.

However, don't think this is over. ;)
Keep up the discussion, I am interested to see what else you all have in store for me. :D

btw, I forgot to mention it but I like to keep the rivals as even as possible in all ways... Drivetrain, weight, power, even country of origin if possible. :dopey:

Mitsubishi Evo 8 V. Subaru WRX STI

Well these two seem like a fairly evenly matched set of boy racer cars. Fantastic handling coupled with all wheel drive systems. These Rally bred monsters of the street both show blistering acceleration from a standing start.

They both boast a 2-litre turbo charged and factory-tuned engine. Both cars seem to have solid as rock donks, with endless possibilities for aftermarket modifications. Japans gentleman agreement may have just gone out the window, but these two are still significantly curbed on the power side of things... especially when we have all seen what the Japanese’s tuning houses are capable of.

The handling is where you really start to notice the difference. The WRX has a tendency to understeer. Although this is a trait that all-wheel drive cars... well almost all cars have, the EVO seems to over come it quite well. Your understeer can quite easily turn into an oversteer, but the all-wheel drive system seems to bail you out no matter how hard you end up throwing this car into a corner.

On to the final aspect of these cars, is the look. The WRX has certainly gone through some controversial looks to get to where it is today. The current model actually is quite pleasing to the eye... certainly an improvement over the bug eye look. The Evo on the other hand hasn't changed all that much in styling. There is definitely a more aggressive look, but then the performance is also more aggressive.

My personal vote goes to the EVO although I will always have a soft spot for the Rex.

Hope thats sorta what you are looking for Kent. Here is my next one, Toyota 2000GT V. Nissan/Datsun 240Z.

Toyota 2000GT V. Nissan 240Z

These two 70's kings of Fuji come head to head in this comparative look at Japanese sports classics. Although most of the comparo’s above seem to focus on the new cars, I thought I’d do one on the grandpas of sports history.

These geriatrics sure don't behave like they belong in a retirement home. True that it maybe be that they suck fuel up like no tomorrow, these monsters have power. They both boast a longitudinally mounted front engine inline 6 that delivers the power to the rear wheels. The 2000GT may only have a 2-litre engine compared with Nissans larger 2.4 litre donk, but they both deliver similar power to those wheels. The Datsun will win the 100-metre sprint in the end with the extra 10 or so HP.

Handling is a little tricky with both cars. The 2000GT does seem to feel like a more subdued ride with very soft shocks. But then again it is a tourer. The Z on the other hand although still very soft and woolly by today’s standards has much harder and less forgiving suspension... perfect for track work.

Now we move to the looks department. The 2000GT does say opulence and grandeur with its lavish curves. It truly boasts a classical look. The Z however screams sports car, and once you rev the engine it continues to scream, and never lets up. The Z look is by now familiar to almost all, and is considered a classic and definitely an unashamed sports car.

My personal vote will have to go to the 240Z for power handling and looks, but then i might be a little biased since i own a 280Z.

I'd like to hear anyone else’s comparo’s or thoughts on the 2000GT V. Nissan 240Z. or feed back on my comparative as well.

More of a fanboy rivalry thing but...

RX-7 (FD) vs. Skyline R34
Of course, it depends upon the model--say the Type RZ RX-7 versus a Skyline R34 M-spec etc.... I think the Skyline wins based on length of model names, but the RX-7 is damn sexy and smooth. ;)

From previous experience:

Great rivalries:

BMW M5 vs. Dodge Viper SRT10

I've tested these two babies against each other in the race reports section twice. Those of you who've read my article on the BMW at the Nur and Supercars at the Autumn Ring know I've picked the Beemer. The Viper might be faster in the right hands, but then again, it might not. I'd like to see what you guys can get out of these two 500hp behemoths.

Corvette Z06 vs. Tuscan Speed 6

Both entertaining, both around 400 hp (or a little less), both crude in some ways, spectacular in others and incredibly fast for the money (live4speed, where areee you? ) both long and sleek, and they turn in similar laptimes. I picked the Tuscan in GT3 (did a zillion laps in both), but in GT4, I'm a little more inclined towards the Corvette.

GT-One vs. R390

Let the fanboys fight over it. What ruins this rivalry in GT4 is the absence of the spectacular GT-One Road Car. If it was still there, the Toyota would win... probably.

Interesting rivalries:

Alfa Romeo GT vs. Mazda RX8 as per AutoCar

Both nice cars, the Alfa is definitely one of the best FFs you can buy, while the RX8 is a good, medium powered FR. I'll have to give this a schwing.

Alpine vs. BMW 2002ti as per Monty's post.

Both great, dynamic and tail-happy little cars, no other two cars could be so different underneath, but still achieve the same fun result. I'd score this a tie, as I honestly can't pick between the two.

Aston Martin DB9 vs. Jaguar XKR

These are the closest to each other in terms of price and mission, but I think it's unfair to compare the old XKR to the new Aston (old DB7 would be closer).

Mitsubishi Eclipse GT 06 vs. Nissan 350Z

It's a closer match in actual power than the 350Z vs. RX-8 one. The Mitsubishi is definitely nowhere near as fast, but it's very fast for an FF car, and will endlessly entertain on a twisty and bumpy track. They're both big V6 coupes with a heritage, both started out as small, simple boy-racer dream cars, evolved into bloated cruisers, got killed off, then got reincarnated as heavy V6 sports coupes with great dynamics. I don't know which is better, honestly, but if it's a race track, I'd pick the Z as the better car, and if it's a road track, I'd pick the Eclipse as the bigger hooligan.

I'm full of them... this could spark off something once I finish my current series.

Subaru Legacy Vs. Audi S4
4WD turbo high-end-ish Sedans. They were a pretty good match up in GT3, but their stats are a bit different now and one or the other would need a little tweaking to even things out (depending on which version of each you pick).
I should try this out again, but with the vastly increased variety in GT4 I haven't got around to it.

Toyota Levin vs. Honda Civic
Similar powered FWDs, long time rivals in the cheap street scene.

MKIII Supra or Toyota Soarer vs. Nissan 300ZX
Big Japanese GT's with 6's.

Toyota MR2 GTS vs. Nissan Silvia K's
Light turbo 4's with sharp handling.

MGTF vs. Toyota MRS vs. Mazda MX5
The two Japanese sports cars against the maker of the ever popular MGB.

Lexus IS200 vs. Nissan Silvia S15
Modern FR Japanese 4's.

Falcon vs. Commodore
*snicker*

Mazda FC RX7 vs. Nissan Silvia Q's S13 or Skyline GTS-T
Turbo RWD's from the late 80's/early 90's.

Skyline vs. Supra vs. RX7 vs. NSX
Done to death.

Greatest rivalry for me was (GT3) and is (GT4)

toyota.gif
Denso Sard Supra v Team Oreca Dodge Viper
dodge.gif

I used to race fully modified MR race cars, the Supras, the Viper, the Mazda RX-7 LM Car and the Calsonic Skyline... but if I couldn't be bothered to do them all, I'd concentrate on the Sard v Oreca.

I had a set up for the Denso Sard that usually would need very little tweaking, and could instantly beat any time set by another MR car. Then the Viper would come along and beat it by a couple of tenths (but only after 10-15 laps or so)... the Sard would then have another try and improve by up to a second, at which point the Viper was left wanting. The Viper was always more of a handful, but much more fun to drive, whereas the Sard would run like it was on rails, much easier to control and, ultimately, unbeatable.

Toyota 1 Dodge 0

I´d say a perfect match for the DB9 should be the Vanquish.
How about Dodge charger 440R/T vs. Plymouth ´cuda?
Both are classic musclecars from the top of the scale, and they should match eachother pretty well, atleast if they were compared bone stock.

Stock, there's quite a few good rivalries. I'll go like this.

1. Evo 8 GSR vs MY02 STi vs RX7 Bathurst R
2. GS300 vs Lotus Carlton vs Audi S4
3. Mazda MX5 1800 RS vs MGF TF160
4. SLR McLaren vs RUF CTR 2
5. Toyota Celica TA22 vs Datsun Bluebird SSS 1800.
6. Storia X4 vs Starlet Glanza V vs EG Civic SiR
7. Aston Martin Vantage V8 vs SL55 AMG
8. FPV Typhoon vs Pontiac GTO vs Supra RZ
9. Suburu STi V2 vs Mitsubishi Evo 2 vs Celica ST205 GT-Four vs Lancia Integrale
10. Nissan Stageas (Autech version and 25t) vs Toyota Caldina GT-Four vs Mitsubishi Legnum VR-4 vs Subaru Legacys ('00 GT-B wagon, '03 2.0GT and '03 3.0R) vs Lexus IS300 SportCross...a wonder wagon showdown!! :trouble:

Those are the best off the top of my head.

Mafs!!

Jaguar Xj220 Vs. Zonda C12 7.3, or SLR McLaren, ZZII, Ford GT, or any other car in its class.

I've always favored the Jag, without any tuning, this car is extremely formidable, with tuning: unstoppable! Though only a 5 speed, there's no lack in acceleration, or top speed, and is fairly agile for its weight. There's no other car that beats its looks(ex. them godawful wheels :yuck: ) and it's notably under appreciated, for a car that was once the fastest in the World.
:sly: :D

The best DB9 rival I can think of is the Mercedes SL65 AMG.

Anyway, hee's a few others I can think of:

BMW Z4 vs. Honda S2000
BMW M3 vs. Mercedes CLK55 AMG
Mercedes E55 AMG vs. Vauxhall Lotus Carlton
Dodge Neon SRT-4 Vs. Honda Accord Euro R '03
Mitsubishi FTO GPX vs. Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo Plus
Dodge Charger 440 R/T vs. Chevrolet Chevelle SS

Kent
Two rivalries I've recently started a spot race for are the Impreza / Evo and the RGT / M3 GTR.

That's such a strange coincidence Kent. To the point that I was going to ask you if you knew my mate Mark (jk). At the weekend me and him had a few quick games.

4 cars were used: Subaru Impreza PSC 22B-STI vs Mitsubishi Evolution VI GRS TME and RUF RGT vs BMW M3 GTR. What a coincidence. All cars had an agreed upon identical light tune, spoilers, obviously no TCS or ASM since it doesn't work on 2 player garage cars. All cars also used the sports/soft tyres (best available), had an oil change and some nice alloy wheels fitted and off we went. Best out of 3 tracks with 3 races each.

The Subaru won 3-0 on Trial Mountain, Mitsubishi 2-1 on Nurburgring, and the Subaru (my choice) won again on Motorland 2-1. Cars are very even and a great combination. Replays are very much cat-and-mouse and look really good.

Unfortunately I picked the RUF RGT and no adjustable spoiler can pe put on that. Mark slapped a spoiler on the BMW GTR, maxed the downforce and was cornering like he was on rails, while I was drifting all over the place (still was fun though and looked good on the replays :)). Well he won that no contest and I only managed a win on Midfield and Amalfi (only because I got in front early and with me sliding all over the narrow track he just couldn't get past me). Mark aced all the other races. Next time I'll check in advance if a car can't have an adjustable spoiler as it makes a huge difference.

By the way, what do you mean by spot race?

Try a Jaguar XKR R-Performance against the Aston Martin DB9 Coupe. With a bit a tweaking you can get them very even. ;)

On the same note if anyone is interested in reading some ideas on how to improve multiplayer garage car games or posting some new ideas/sugestion and experiences please read my new thread. :)

Cheers

pesci vs R8
--------------
2 amazing cars, that are so close its scary. The R8 to me is the slightly easier to control out of the two.

another good battle is the A4 DTM vs TT DTM vs Astra DTM.....

Some great match up suggestions here.
One that really sticks out is the M5 .vs. E55. 👍
I would like to take some time and set that up as well as a Ford GT .vs. Saleen S7. :D

Regarding the DB9...
AMG SL65 or SLR- both are great ideas. 👍

This also reminds me that the XJ220 was mentioned.
Maybe a XJ220 .vs. Zonda ???
I'm not sure which Zonda would work best in that since I don't remember all of the specs off the top of my head. :ouch:

Oh, I almost forgot few final things...
1) No one has replied to my question and guess at an answer about what JDM stands for (Japanese Domestic Model?).

2) What would be a good match for the NSX-R '02 or NSX Type S Zero '99?

3) Would it be possible for you guys to stick with more traditional two party combos?
Sticking three or more cars into a combo makes it really hard to get an even amount of attention for all parties involved.

4) Thanks for the replies!!!
I appreciate the conversation going on in this thread.
Some-what because it is related to the subject of my spot race, some-what because it is just great to see how creative you all are about coming up with comparison battles.

Finally,
5) If you guys could, I would really like it if you could indicate whether your combos are suggested for Arcade mode or GT mode. 👍

Kent
Some great match up suggestions here.

Firstly
@ KENT i did a search using google and looked through a few tuning sites and im pretty sure that JDM stands for Japenese Domestic Market.

Secondly
I shall take care of this one tonight and report on it after i have tested them,

I use cars with the only modifications being, R3 tyres, full weight reduction and oil change.

I will test them over 3 courses and 3 laps each course with one practice lap to become familiar with the car. I will also do a drag strip run, a 0-400 run and 0-1000 run.

Watch this space.
