Rolling or Standing starts....

Rolling starts still can work, if they are done properly, pairing up cars together before the race & when pole position car crosses start/finish line, all car get to accelerate, currently it's like a boat going through a wake zone waiting to cross the marker.

I would prefer a mix of both, rolling starts for race cars & grid starts for production cars.

:)

If they would change how they implement rolling starts, it wouldn't be so bad. I hate being in the back and have to wait until the start line in order to accelerate. That is not realistic at all. In a real life race that has rolling starts, it is usually 2 rolls and the start is determined by the dropping of the flag. None of this wait until you reach the starting line in order to accelerate. This gives a HUGE advantage to the person at the front because he is already on his way when the others still have to wait.

I'm all for rolling and grid starts. I think grid starts requires a little more skill and precision for the launch and the first corner. Seperates the men from the men who drives like women. Yeah...I said it!

Correct. All online races except for Eiger Nordwand are grid starts. 👍

Only expert event on Suzuka F and Fuji F course got grid start, while the rest is rolling start. That's why i never raced on Daytona, London, HSR, and Eiger (Except drifting events) for racing.

im pretty sure in reality most races i watched start with the grid (went to see BTCC @ Silverstone weeks ago) i think rolling start are not relay that realistic.

I prefer grid starts, I don't mind rolling starts but not when the cars are in a single file line with bags of space between each one. They should be closer together and rolling in rows of two not 1st space, space, space, more space, 2nd, space, space, space, 3rd etc, I don't like that.

Rolling starts for the races where it should be (NASCAR with grid starts would just kill it for me) or if you're competing in a race series where all the cars are really, really underpowered (the K-Car cup comes to mind).

Otherwise, I like grid starts.

For higher performance cars, a rolling starts usually safer with exceptions, Speed World Challenge still does standing starts,
but occasionally somebody heats up a clutch and or stalls, leading to a few messy starts over the years.
The more performance you have, the less room you have for error on a grid if somebody can't get started.

:)

I really hated when I played GT 4 in a very short race and it was rolling start. If it was Tsukuba, for example, in a 3-lap race and the car in front was 5 seconds ahead, it would be virtually impossible to catch up with an identical car (especially races with really slow cars like the Subaru 360 and Citroen 2cv).

On the other hand I wonder if doing a grid start with 16 cars would be possible without the framerate dropping.

I don't like rolling starts at all. Most real world racing use grids to start races. It wouldn't be so bad to have rolling if we all started when the leader crossing the line instead of waiting. They should bring back qualifying too.

A mix of all the suggestions.

I would like rolling starts as long as I can qualify and they're done right (two-wide you accelerate when the green flag drops, not when you get to the starting line). Grid starts for slow and fast car races where it's appropriate.

The only place I would really not mind the current rolling start is in endurance races. Gives me enough time to actually catch the pole position.

grid starts with qualifying

Agreed. I hope we get qualifying for every event, if we so choose to use it (sometimes its a nice challenge to start in the back and pass everyone in a slightly slower car without touching any other cars *LAN Hint* :)) 👍

At the very very very least. I would want a few more laps if they keep the current rolling start-no qualifying setup like they did for GT5P.

There are just some situations where you can't drive clean around 14 cars and catch up with 1st place in 3 laps. I don't like doing things over and over again, it stresses me out and I stop having fun. Especially if the reward of finally accomplishing it is minimal.

Otherwise I hope the quick tune is non-existant, and so is the points limitations. If the PD GT can race in the PP750 class, I should be able to go out and buy it without having to completely destroy the performance of it just to race. (I still haven't gotten past 12th in any of the PP750 Tuner races in any car I enter, but I'm gonna work on my tuning skills and take another crack at it later.)

Qualifying is a must, i loved GT1, it had qualifying on the sunday cup 👍

Qualifying on GT4 was pathetic. You could only qualify if the race was long. But if its long enough to overtake your opponents, you don't need to qualify in the first place.

I hate rolling starts. Infact i hate just about every race in GT5P, they're the sort of things i would expect as challenges, i.e. overtake all opponents in 1 lap. If there is a rolling start, with <10 laps, i want the option to qualify. Quite often i pick average cars in GT5P, to increase the challenge. I'll probably be 3-4 seconds faster than the lead car per lap, but i start at the back, around 10-15 seconds behind, in a 3 lap race, plus there is 14 other cars in my way. Its just not right, i have to do perfect laps to win, there is no room for any mistakes.

Grid starts FTW

What do you mean it's not right? It's a racing game - if you mess up, you lose. Simple as that. Besides, you just admitted yourself that you pick average cars to increase the challenge. If that's too tough for you, pick a better car...

I would want the starts to reflect the starts in real life like rally is obviously a standing start and NASCAR is rolling? I liked the qualifying and if you skipped it you started last which was fair enough. I'm wondering how grid starts will work now that tyre temperature and wear might be put in gt5? Maybe you could have an F1 style warm up lap to get some heat into the tyres ready for the start.

Grid starts are always better IMO, gives everyone a chance at victory and a good race unlike rolling starts on Daytona Road when the guy in 1st shoots off and no-one can catch him.

I know this is only a prologue. I also know that Prologue is supposed to give the player a challenge, to keep them occupied for years until the final release (obviously it didnt keep us occupied for quite that long, otherwise we wouldn't be on this forum waiting for it).

What i meant was, if races are going to be short like that, we need to be able to qualify, to make it a fair race. Or a grid start, as that balances it out a little more. Or we could have both. But i'm not having 2 lap races on autumn ring mini with 16 cars, because by the time you cross the start line, the guy infront has almost completed the first lap. Its ok with only 6 cars, but with 16 cars, the gap between the front and back car is too big at the start of the race.

I dont see why we can have both grid and rolling. In fact, i think we could even have it so that players can set the rolling speed/grid as they desire (practice and arcade modes only).

I prefer both. sometimes I prefer rolling more than grid. All grid really does is give more advantage to 4WD cars off the line.

If there is a qualifying session involved, I feel the guy in front deserves that. But I do understand both sides, that's why i feel both deserve to be implemented in game.

-> It varies depends on the racing series, on all F1's, rally(cross), and various touring car series involves grid-starts; while NASCAR, Super GT, and D1/Formula D involves roll-starts.

-> On lower race series that involves with unmodified cars, I prefer reverse grid (fastest car on the back end) with qualifying like what Best MOTORing has been doing. But on any intentional form of not pushing the car to the limit during qualifying will automatically disqualify you.

-> On higher race series on which involves more expensive (modified) cars, should be on a traditional grid-start with the fastest car on the front.

-> And on racing series that involves super-expensive sequential transmissions on various touring cars should apply rolling-starts.

-> But on the personal note, I prefer Gran Turismo traditional grid-starts. :)

I preffer a standing start.
Also online. It just gives a thrill and throttle controle is much more needed.
Only on Le Mans with the prototypes I would like to have a rolling start.
