Rolling or Standing starts....

Is it just me, or do you also just hate the new Standing Starts. I usually drive the PP 750 on Suzuka. I didn't mind starting in the back of the field, with a few seconds disadvantage. Now it's just total chaos.... After turn 2 it's back to normal again, but my goodness, it looks awfull....
I think standing starts are more effective the moment somekind of damage is implemented. But untill then....... please give me back our rolling starts!!!

For now I'd like to leave you with my latest Viper Drift...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gp_8wEJoHr0

hopefully, there will be an option in GT5 for
Rolling side by side
Rolling single file
standard side by side

did i forget any...?

also, if there are password servers you can join a GT5 club and avoid pickup races where crazy starts are more prevalent.
:)

Have notice in recent videos we seem to have an array of different starts from

side by side countdown start for nascar,

The one below shows single file rolling start all at the same time, wihich to me seems better than GT5P one after anouther start,

picture.php

And this picture here states the type of start which leaves me to believe we will be able to change it.

It might just be me, but the rolling start in the first clip is not accurate for a NASCAR race. There seems to be too much of a gap.

And on the note of having a clean start, I'd rather see variety (some clean some dirty) starts where it actually feels you are driving against a person not a machine. I know its a tad off but in the NASCAR games of yesteryear, the starts could be very exciting depending on how good the first car gets off.

Hopefully with what appears the return of standing starts that PD doesn't get crazy and go the route that some games have with auto-rev feature, but leaves the user to control the RPMs off of launch as in previous games.

👍
good point! You have convinced me that PD should include this option in GT5 starts so we can end up with...
Grid start (side by side)
Rolling start (side by side)
Rolling start (single file)

I thought you said, "Good point! You have to convince PD that they should include this option in GT5 so we can end up with it." 👍👍

HAHAHAHA my version is so true...:sly:

Thats what sucked a lot with Forza 3, getting off the line clean and quick takes a lot of skill to balance the revs and not spark up the bags too much, heres hoping PD give us a chance to do it ourselves

If it's not for an oval or endurance race I prefer standing/grid starts. That way it's worth playing with gear ratios and assists to improve your starts.

In arcade the position should be random.

Random is just cheesy.

I'd rather have a qualify session (provided the AI puts up a fight), or have the ability to choose a starting position in arcade mode.

i think theres an option for rolling start or standing start because when I played the Best Buy demo, I think on the track selection it says "Rolling Start"

EDIT: I'm not the first to notice this, I just saw someone else WITH a picture proving this! lol sorry

I preffer grid starts but as mentioned rolling starts wouldn't be so bad if they brought back qualifying.

Plus, with grid starts if gives you a reason to go practice the quarter mile. I had lots of fun in GT4 setting up my car for that along with suspension settings for Deep Forrest and Trial Mountain.

You could just have options on what you want ot do qualify, random or start from the back, just like loads of other games. Wouldn't that solve everyones problem.

What I have noticed though is that in campo...... (the oval kart track) the rolling start is single file not double file like in real racing. Also that in monza karting a standing start is used. So I think that the type of start is dependant on the track not the car class.

I do hope they remove this standing start where it shows your car while it counts down, then at the last second you control the throttle. :indiff:

The standing starts in Prologue were fine:

👍

Ones online and ones not could that be a contributing factor to this?

I always think I'd prefer standing starts, for several reasons. First off, I've never actually played a game with rolling starts (Okay, NFS:Carbon, but don't remind me, that awful game still gives me nightmares.) I always liked the standing starts in Forza 2 and 3, even if it did tend to lead to some pileups if the first corner was tight.

Second, I like standing starts because they test your ability to make a quick launch, just like playing with a manual setup to test your ability to utilize the car's gears. I enjoy trying to get a quick, barely-squealing start, although I don't think I've ever pulled a proper one off, as I'm not very good at it. I'll keep trying, though.

Lastly, standing starts show who's who in the run to first place, and, as well as showing which car is faster, also gives a clue as to who is the better at making a quick launch.

I'd prefer standing starts over rolling any day, although I'll have to try both to be sure. I don't find the cons mentioned about standing starts that much of a problem, that's all.

Oh yeah, and you can't set a time on the test track without a standing start, so I'll be practicing that a lot.

I think standing or rolling starts depends on the race, but I'm more concerned on how PD's going to do starting positions. Starting in last would be a bother with 16 cars to pass. Random starting position would cause racers to restart until they get a desirable position, and qualifying takes too long (at least in GT4; when you have to do a warm-up lap first). Sorry if I missed something from GT5P that solved this. (i don't play that one)

In the middle would be fine :sly:

I generally always prefer standing starts, but I also see where a few different race types would cater better to a rolling start.

here's a good example, the cars will spread out eventually. I think that grid starts are more fun anyway, in my opinion.

But grid starts would look silly in a Nascar race, for example.

I guess each one to it's kind would be a good thing to have.

good points about standing starts.

It is amazing how many good drivers cannot do a decent standing start. I'm no pro, but I always pick up a couple of places on standing starts b/c some guys always burnout and lose traction! haha
:)

Well, for Nascar races, standing starts would look a bit silly. Don't they do rolling starts in the actual competition?

Other than that, I think standing starts are the way to go for most races, but I wouldn't mind having the choice to shake it up now and then and go with rolling. Or maybe the game already has it preselected for different races. Who knows?

Could we have launch control now that we have standing starts back?
Although i suppose we are running out of buttons.
