If this rumor is true then people like me, who never owned a PS2, can perhaps download GT4 (and other brilliant PS2 titles) from PSN and play it on the PS3?

I hope it's true. For some reason, my 160GB PS3 doesn't have backwards compatibility, which is a pain in the ass cause both my PS2s decided to pack in, meaning I can't play any of my older games, including the legendary GT4.

Hmmm - this would annoy me - cos I flogged all of my PS2 games when I got my PS3 - because they said it would never happen...

It would also mean I will rebuy old games again - thus costing me more money!!

At least I could pick up some games I didn't get in the end though - like MGS3...

It is extremely unlikely that we'll see any games be BC if they are disc based.

However, it is possible, and likely, that ports on a game by game basis will become available on PSN for download.

Sony is pulling a real hum dinger with this one, remove BC so that everyone has to buy overpriced ancient PS2 games through the PSN store again or through reboxed PS3 complations (GOW). You could probably pick up every PS2 game you want in a bargain bin or an ebay for like 3 pounds or less!

Why couldn't they adapt some system that lets you input the bar code or serial number on a game's case to get the game for free, or at most for a nominal fee for the transfer?

Would be good - but can't ever see that getting in the way of their bottom line!!!

Because, quite frankly, Sony doesn't care. And based on how they handled the Go, I doubt people would buy it anyways.

With that they can add or change things about the games, like adding trophy support and 720p.

i belive this is taken out of context of what it is meant. sony has talked about putting older PS2 games on BD and companys like konami have liked the idea and also these games would be available for download on the PSN store. but the fact that the PS3 dropped the Backwards compatibility it seems extremely doubtful that they will bring it back and if they where going to do it i think they would have included it in the slim

Hmm. If it's true, then it's something I'd be interested in, as long as I was able to just bung in my current GT4 disc rather than buying a new copy through download. If I had to buy the game again, Sony can take a long walk off a short plank.

I'd like to have my PS3 as an all-in media hub that can play my PS2 games (indeed, the only reason I still have PSX games is because of the convenience of playing them through the PS3 with a virtual memory card - I should never have sold Red Alert...) but as it is at the moment with a 40GB PS3 I have to keep hold of the PS2.

Because they are a corperation just like any other... very money hungry. That and people would go through game cases at junk sales and just copy down the serial numbers.

Have you heard what they have done to the poor PSP Go buyers, they have annouced there wont be a way to transfer your old and new UMD games to digital format.... SORRY! :dunce:

So basically they totally lied because they said the GO would be UMD backwards compatible via a PC 'digitalising' program.

Robin.

Why would you buy a PSP:GO if you already had a PSP?

C.

Its the same as saying why buy a new iPod when your old one works fine, its because it offers new features and a smaller form factor.

Also there will be those Go owners who want to buy used UMD games and put them on their Go. They can't do that now!

Robin.

Its a bit smaller. It also has that nifty continue feature that might be Go exclusive. Sony also hasn't exactly been forthcoming with how the 3000 can already play games from PSN, so people who hate UMDs with an intense burning fury may be swayed towards it if they went only by what Sony says it can do.

It also supposedly looks like (and is priced like) an Apple product, which no doubt makes certain types of pathetic people want to buy it.

Does the PSP:go offer new features?

I thought it was just a slightly smaller PSP - that didn't have a UMD Drive but had a HDD instead?

Yep, Sony is SO money hungry that they've been selling the PS3 at a loss since it launched, and have been bleeding money for years.

So money hungry that they continue to invest MILLIONS of dollars in titles like Killzone 2 which underperform, but still continue to invest money into stellar first party titles.

I think the Dunce cap is very suitable for you. Never take it off.

Edit: And for the record, Sony never said that you would be able to take your UMD games and somehow get digital copies of them. It was never explicitly stated that those were their plans. The closest that was ever said to such a statement was "we are currently looking into our options for owners of UMD based games". Period. Quit spreading FUD, especially if you haven't the slightest of an idea as to what you are speaking about.

Trust you to lower the tone of a civil discussion, I wouldnt have expected anything less from you.

If you think that any business isnt money hungry you need to go back to school. They sell PS3's at a loss to make a profit from the games! :dunce: Which they have to invest millions of dollars in eitherwise the whole system doesnt work. So dont make it out like Sony is doing anything different or more generous than every other company.

Im not going to waste any more time on this with you.

i have a launch 60gb PS3 (still going strong, hope it continues. fingers crossed), so its fully bc for PS2 and PS1 games

only trouble is when you put a PS2 game in it, it shuts down and then reboots to play it

i didn't like that in terms of wear and tear on my PS3, so i use my PS2 still. seems i've gained little, if anything :ouch:

if the newer PS3's became bc, i wonder if they'd have to reboot to play the PS2 games?

Interesting thought. So far it is of course, just a rumor. But a software emulator rather than hardware is not that strange, especially if Sony can charge for it. :)

Isn't the BC in UK:launch (60gig) and US80gig machines software only?

The US and Japanese launch consoles had hardware BC. (i.e. a PS2 slipped inside!)

Yes. But if I understand the article correctly, they will sell the games straight from PSN, so they must include a software emulator for the consoles that don't have one.

Indeed - I was reinforcing your comment that software emulators aren't strange!!

There could be a common (required) install for PS2 games (that gets installed first time you buy a PS2 game) - or it could be part of a firmware update...

Or like you say - it could be tacked onto each game!

Sony will never recoup their losses this console generation on the PS3.

Never.

That's how much money they've lost.

I'd appreciate it if you'd not use hearsay, rumors, and other FUD when you discuss things of fact. You look foolish if you do otherwise.
