I just read in my PS2 owner's manual that a cable exists to plub a S-video cable between my TV (NTSC) and the PS2...

Is this cable easy to find in North America?
Is this cable giving a better image resolution and overall quality than the red-white-yellow normal cable, especially for the GT4 game?

I went "cheap" and got a "Mad Catz" S-video/RCA combo cable from Wal-Mart (Playstation section) for about $15. It has a clear casing and looks "braided" underneath. It made a "big" difference in clarity and sharpness on my digital (non-HDTV) TV. This is on the S-video side of course.

yes, it's like night and day, I bought the same cable from wal-mart for $9.89, plus it has hookups for Gamecube and XBOX. However, you wil not be able to see the other video formats through it, such as 480p or 1080i, a component video hookup is required for that.

Hahaha!!! You got the "Price Rollback". But yeah, its the same cable with the Gamecube/XBox/PS2 connectors. I wasn't expecting much...just something to make the blurry numbers (time, speed, lap count, etc.) a little sharper. I was more than impressed...esp. for the money.

I got the same one when I was playing through GTA:SA. The stats screen text was nearly unreadable with the standard cables, but the S-video cleaned it right up. Huge difference, and I seriously ass-kicked myself for not doing it sooner.

Absolutely... The SVHS cable makes a world of difference... I will NOT, However, recommend the Monster ones... I tried 2 sets of Monsters, and none delivered the quality of my noname model (which I assume hides inside eg. the MadCatz cable as well)

Yeah as stated above, you can't go wrong buying it, i have never regreted buying mine, just the cheapo Mad Cats but it works great, I'm really surprised thath they didn't include this factory, i know they would loose some omney on their accesories, but it would have made the out of box video look much much better

why do people buy monster cables? theyre EXACTLY the same as cheaper cables, just state to have better quality, and cost twice as much. silly..

So I got a t.v. that uses this kind of cable. Is it better than S-Video and does that mean I can do 480i or 1080i??

I also own the monster cables, (I was lucky enough to get them early on for $15 dollars on ebay, when there were hardly any games that supported them in 480p) and they are better quality than off-brand component cables.

They have more shielding to block interference, basically to get the best direct connection from the hardware to the display without any loss of picture quality. Some may not see the difference, it really comes down to the display you're using. You will see the difference on a higher quality display. Otherwise, Monster cables not needed

Not all TVs that accept component cables neccessarily support those formats

:odd: Ok so... This may not give me 480i 1080i but it WILL be better than S-video?

In theory, yes. the more the video signal is separated, the better the quality. In s-video, the video signal is separated into chroma and luminence, whereas the regular yellow RCA hookup is the entire video signal interfering with itself.

hope this explains the entire matter :)

I got a 15 inch LCD monitor, and my PS2 is hooked up on my PC through my TV card.. Right now it is hooked through a composite cable.. Will i get any better image with S-video cable.. Picture on my monitor is kinda blurry, and has jagged edges, it is nothing like on the TV..
Is this because of the LCD, or the composite cable, or what...??
Should i buy an S-video cable..??

Yes there is such a cable, and as you can see from the above posts, you can get them almost anywhere....Best Buy, Walmart, Target (where I got mine), etc..... and yes, you will see a visual difference

By composite you mean red, white, yellow (video)? If so, S-Video would look better but it would still depend on PC,video card, and quality and capability of the monitor....

I just bought a Madcatz S-Video universal adapter for CAN$14.00 (instead of CAN$39.95 for the monster cable!).
I'm plugging it tonight.

Thanks to all of you who gave me these great advises... :)

Right now my setup is this:

from PS2 to a switch box, Video cable (yellow) to TV, red and white cables to my stereo, (i have a 19in mono tv)

The TV only has a yellow and a white input, there is no red, that's why my setup is like that, so that i can get stereo sound.

So i'm just wondering, do you guys that are more knowledgable think i could benefit from s video cables?

Becaus certain things on the screen are blurry, such as the speedo, all the times (top right), and the fuel gauge.

I'm also wondering if my TV is s-video compatible, is there any way to find out?

Any response would be appreciated.

Last week I bought Monster componet cables for my PS2. I wish I had bought them sooner. GT4 looks so much better. 👍

I dont have s-video, what do you guys reccomend for me, I have the yellow, white, red outputs.

what does your display/TV have?

If the TV only has a yellow and white input, it is highly unlikely it has s-video. But I could be wrong. the s-video input looks kind of like your mouse or keyboard input, assuming you don't have a USB keyboard or mouse.

I would highly reccomend a VGA adapter that allows you to connect your PS2 to your computer monitor to anyone who isn't able to use component hookups (or even s-video, for that matter) on your TV. A little research is required, but if you get the right thing, you'll be able to view the game in 1080i or 480p for a lot less than buying a new TV and only a little more than buying a S-video cable.

I just checked my TV and it does not have an s-video input, which sucks, but i've been wanting to buy a new TV for over a year now but i never had any money. The screen is so round that it extends about 1" out from the side of the TV if you look at it from a side view.

I really don't want to run my PS2 through my computer becaus the monitor I have sucks and I don't want to get to technical. But thanks anyways for explaining it to me g-man, it's very appreciated.

Boris - Didn't notice your post until now... My recommendations are as follows :

1. Get the SVHS cable - Trust me - You will NOT regret it !...

2. Instead of whatever crappy** software came with your TV card - Get Dscaler... It'll do things to your picture quality you haven't dreamed of !...

3. After getting Dscaler to work - Look in This Thread at the Dscaler support forum - Look for posts from Jade5221, try her settings and wrrk from there !...

** I've tried more TV cards than I care to mention, and each time it's the SW that brings it down...

I picked up a Panasonic "Tau" TV, also from Wal-Mart/K-Mart, for $250. Its a 27" "digital" TV, not HDTV, but flat "screen" and more resolution than an analog TV. It has S-video and Component inputs. Great TV for the money...I almost can't justify spending the extra money for an HDTV. But that's just me. The picture is a little on the dark side, as reported by many people who have the same model, but I adjusted that last night after making adjustments on an internal brightness control (had to take the back off). 👍

The S-video makes a BIG difference in clarity/sharpnes...even if it's "MAD CATZ". Component cables make a difference as I also use them for the DVD player that's attached. I can personally say that the "MAD CATZ" cable, using the S-Video cable, plays DVD movies much "sharper" than with the supplied PS2 Cables.

This coming from a guy who refuses to spend a lot of money for Video equipment and has blurry vision, but still wants a clean picture. Now home stereo equipment and cables, and differences with audio cable, is a whole 'nother matter!
