Now I dont know if this has posted before, but I just found this video on the youtube site and it amazed me. Here's a question, has this ever happend before or after the Jerez 97????

I saw that as it happened. I've seen it happen with 2 cars, but I'm unaware of it every happening with 3 before or since.

Not as low as you might think.

Take Monaco this year as an example. During 1st qualifying, the top 12 cars - half the grid - were covered by roughly 1.1s. F1 is timed to the thousandth of a second, so that's 12 cars fitted into 1100 time segments or thereabouts. The odds of any one car occupying any one time segment is 1,100 to one - the same as tossing a coin gives you a 2 to 1 chance of getting a head. The next car - or coin toss - along can't remember what the last car - or coin toss - did so, unlike a lottery where a drawn ball is removed from the sample space, the odds of the getting exactly the same time is... 1,100 to one (or 2 to 1 to get another head for the coin).

With 22 car grids, 16 races a year and 50+ years of F1 history, it's only surprising that it hasn't happened more often.

I think a little bit of both. But in this case...it was sure luck.

It is obviously a case of pure coincidence, but in '97,'98,'99 and maybe '00, Schumi was racing cars that were simply better than the one he was driving. (all designed by Adrian Newey btw) So this was maybe equal talent for Frentzen and Villeneuve, but Schumi's talent made the '90s more interesting and prevented Newey's cars from sweeping away everyone else. Downside to the story is that his talent did make the 2001-2004 seasons boring as hell.

In your opinion maybe! But not to me and all the Michael Schumacher/Ferrari fans!

Speak for yourself. I'm a big Schumacher and Ferrari fan but even I thought 2002 and 2004 were verging on boring.
 
I am a Schumacher fan as well, without a doubt. But at the same time, I'm a F1 racing fan. The 1980s'- and the first 1990s' seasons with Senna, Prost, Mansell and Piquet, those were beautiful, real racing championships with many top drivers. Over the last 5 years, I haven't seen anything even close to being as exciting as those days. F1 seems to be dying slowly and this is because of the regulations we have nowadays. Of course, everything needs to be as safe as possible, but it still has to be racing. Bringing back real slick tires would be a start to making it more exciting, as drivers would have more grip as a result and this, in my opinion, also contributes to safety. But I am very sure that many F1 fans, regardless of being a Schumi fan or not, agree with me that those 2001-2004 seasons were not interesting F1racing seasons, that 2005 wasn't that good either and 2006 does not seem to become any better and that F1 is losing its charm as a result.
 
If cars could pass, then it would be completely different.

Its uninteresting because cars cant pass. Many times Kimi, alonso, schumi could of passed each other and made some decent racing.

I beleive if F1 cars could pass, would be different results.

I agree, however I'm not a Schumaker or Ferrari fan. There have been some races in those times when cars have overtaken, Mika versus Schumaker at the Spa I remember as a great pass, he even put his tires on the grass as Schui was eding him off the track, as usual.

The problem is not so much the tires, or the power but the aerodynamics of the cars. The air passes so smoothly over the cars and onto the rear wing and underneath the cars and into the splitter so that to hold the car on the ground they have to disrupt the air. This then means that a car following close behind gets in the slip stream and dirty air, causing a 2 fold problem.

1 the car loses the sooth air over it's nose therefore losing downforce,
2 it can't use the quiet air to gain a few MPH etxra to pass.

Until this is resolved then F1 is going to become a queue of very fast cars following each other round & round a track.

Wrong. JV and HHF were both at Williams in 1997.

Quite impressive though how they all got the same time, in the championship deciding weekend. 👍 Nice find.
 
Williams subsequently published the telemetry traces from both of their cars. The laps were completely different, but they ended up at the same time.

I note that IRL is timing to four decimal places now.
