Saving in Endurance races

They should at least have made saving in the pits an OPTION, if people want to do the endurance with a bunch of friends for 24 hours they have the OPTION not to save. :yuck:

Ok I personnally am going to B-Spec them all, and even then I don't know if I can for several reasons:
1.) I have a life other than video games.
2.) I don't have that long of a attention span in which I can drive the same car for 8 solid hours, let alone 24.
3.) My friends wouldnt consider doing the whole buddy system because they have lives as well/ they won't feel like it.
4.) Lastly my parents would get b1tchy if I tried to pull it off.
So unless I can manage to pull a big party where everyone does 3-4 laps, and stays through the night keeping that going, I doubt B-Spec is even going to happen. I only pray for the save option, as much as I appreciate the 24 hour option etc., I only wish their will be an alternate for the less intense gamer, or one who thinks he has ADD. :sly:

You do realize that B-Spec mode allows you to let the computer do the driving for you, correct? It will pit when it needs to, do the necessary changes when it needs to, etc.

Yea, but A-spec would be much more fun, else we would have bought F1 Manager or something

there should be a petition to get pd to implement pit saves into the other versions of gt4 that are still unreleased.

hell, i'm sure we could just try to email a link to this thread to them, and I'm hoping they'd heed our call.

Ok, but does anyone know the e-mail adres? and how to e-mail an link?

Yea, but people who dont want to should be given the option, if you wanna pause it: fine, but the people who wanna do A-spec(or 8(!!!) hours of B-spec) don't have an option now!

I'm surprised that in the six pages this thread already has only once was the "Le Mans" game been mentioned.

I have that game (the PS2 version) and I already made the full 24 hour race twice.

In that game you can save in the pits. The first time I tried to do the full race, I did it alone, one fuel tank/set of tyres per night. IIRC, each fuel tank lasted for about two hours (driving smoothly and trying to be precise the tyres lasted that time also), so I was doing about "two hour" enduros every night four nearly two weeks (some nights I made two turns, some nights I didn't have the possibility to play).

I won that race (in the yellow 2000 Audi). AND, it was such a fantastic experience (that game really gives you the feeling you are there) that I decided I had to do it the hard way (24H straight), but of course with some friends. I decided to invite two, but somehow I found almost all of my friends were interested and, in the end, our "team" had 8 drivers.

So, by 16:00 PM of a particular saturday in one weekend of August 2003, 8 "racers" started what would become our Le Mans experience ... it was awesome.

We decided to split the 24 hour in three periods. 16:00 to 24:00 saturday (one hour turn for each driver); 0:00 to 8:00 AM sunday (two 30 mn turns each driver, just to ensure no one went to bed ... but we could sleep on the couch); 8:00 AM to 16:00 PM sunday (same as the "night shift").

Yours truly had the honor to start the race, so I drove the 16:00-17:00, the 0:00-0:30, the 4:00 - 4:30, the 8:00-8:30 and the 12:00-12:30 turns.

We finished 10th overall which, not bad considering that:
a) some of the 8 weren't very experienced "game race drivers" - tyre wear was so bad that it was useless to fill the tank to 100%, midrace we decided to fill it just to 80% (saving a few seconds in the pits and leaving them with the car slightly lighter);
b) our car was a privateer Panoz (Danish), with a top speed much lower then the Audis, Pescarolo and some others (that was terrible in the Hunaudieres straight, and in the twisty sections please re-read the above "a)" comment :ouch:

Anyway it was such a great experience that we all promised to come back to "Le Mans" again.

After that 2003 race we did (spring 2004) the 10 hour Petit Le Mans race (Road Atlanta circuit, it rained for about 3/4 of that race), just as a build up to the promised 2004 Le Mans race, but it wasn't however possible to do it in the summer of 2004. Maybe 2005 will be the year of the great win :D

I tell you all this just for you to know that a 24 hour race, with some friends, is a fantastic gaming/racing experience.

Now, back to GT4:

As soon as I realized (read it here) that GT4 included, not only the Nurb track, but also the Le Mans one (this was completely new to me) AND 24 hour races in both these circuits, I talked to my friends about it and that maybe we shoud run our 24 hour Le Mans race ('05 edition) in this game.

But, and we have been discussing this matter, there are at least three good reasons to play it again in the "good old" Le Mans game (and none of them is the "no save" problem):

a) 6 cars in GT4, against the 24 car line up of LM. How can you drive through the night without overtaking, in almost every lap, a few Porsches, or Vipers, or Corvettes, or sometimes even catching up other prototypes ... or just chasing their tail lights lap after lap ... or noticing those front lights get closer and closer in the Hunaudieres straight (Is it an Audi :nervous: ? Is it the Pescarolo  ? Noooo, it's just a works Panoz :grumpy: !!!! :D

b) Dry race from start to finish. What kind of realism is that? We want to know that rain can come, or go, and ruin your well-planned fuel/tyre comsumption turns (our '03 edition didn't have any rain, but that was the game's decision in that event, not the game's only weather option)

c) 24 hours sunshine. If you want to feel a 24 hour racing experience, you won't feel it that much. "It's 3 AM and the sun is where it was since the beggining of the race, and where it will be until the end of it". No comments needed here ...

GT4 is, without a doubt, THE BEST concerning graphics/sound/car physics. The best "driving simulation" game. But "racing simulation" - specially if we're talking 24 hours - is something different.

However, we are still considering GT4 in our discussion. Because, unlike LM (one car, one team against all other 23 AI cars) in GT4 we can link up to six PS2 and, if we get enough friends to do this, we will be able to race against each other.

btw, most people seem to be concerned that the PS2 will not stand the 24 hours. My PS2 did it without any problem.

Sorry if this was too long, and even a bit off topic ...

Good post Hun. I have LeMans for both the PC and PS2 and love racing the 24 hours of LeMans. The longest I could go racing straight was almost 5 hours. I pitted every 25 to 30 laps almost two hours saved and went on. GT4 will probably be my favorite game, but will not make it perfect. Time progression at least should have been included (night to day, day to night).Weather conditions would not be absolutely needed. Just mail them a copy of LeMans 24 hours with your and mines GT5 Wishes Letter 👍

changing weather and night to day would be a difficult concept due to the graphical quality of the game. We would have to wait till PS3 for GT5 so by then we may be in luck

I agree with hun, though I personally liked the DC version of TD lemans over the ps2 version. The latter had more tracks and cars, but the former somehow pulled off better graphics, and the controls felt tighter, which I thought more important than the graphics.
Yeah, no day/night cycle pissed me off almost more than no saving in the pits. And I loved that you could see the clouds move in the le mans game.

I'm surprised at this... even if you hunkered down and decided to race all 24 hours at once, it's not the best thing for your PS2 (especially older ones) to stay on for 24 hours straight..

But if you decide to break it up into 8 or 12-hour "sessions", now we're really talking about risk..

i used to leave my ps2 on for more than a week straight, when i was playing tokyo extreme racer zero, to get miles on my car so i could upgrade them fast

i think it was left on for 2 weeks straight, then a few months later another 2 weeks

I don't understand people who are worried about their PS2s running for 24 hours on the enduros. Do you leave your PC or laptop on for 24 hours or more? I do, and they have never had a problem. A PS2 is nothing more than a computer, nothing special, it has a fan, a heatsink, etc... It will be fine, stop worrying, PD would have considered this.

iam just thinking how difficult would it be for time progression.

have the sun move across the sky and be replaced by a moon so that the track is never truely very dark. not tricky.

moving real time shadows, now i can see that being tricky perhaps a step by step progression would work instead of doom 3 esque real time.

now this may hit the FPS but i wouldnt mind if GT4 dropped into the 50's as the human eye cant distinguish between 60 and 50 very well.

I really do not want to use b spec in the game but know that racing for 24 hours is out of the question as none of my friends are really into Gran Turismo.

I am hoping that health and safety agencies force P.D to include a save feature. I think this is quite possible, especially in the US, after seeing an episode of Top Gear with the Viper SRT10 which had warning stickers all over it.

However if worst comes to worst then i will just pause it and do it over a fewdays hoping no-one turns the console off when i'm away.

There is absolutely no way that I can leave my PS2 on pause without my wife or one of the kids switching it off or putting in a DVD. Besides, I just know that we would get a power cut after 23hrs of play.

I agree, if u can stay up for 24 hours, why can't your PS2 :)

Hold on here...

You want a Government organisation to TELL computer game manufacturers that they can't make us drive a 24hr race without a save feature?

No-one's forcing you to do the 24hr races at all. If you do it, you're doing it out of free will. If you're going to wimp out of doing the whole 24hr thing, you may as well just wimp out of doing the race at all.

Unbelievable - it's too hard for you to do it so you want the Government to say it's too hard for everyone?

 That is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. They shouldn't allow sharp kinives anymore, because they could cut someone.

They should ban the money because the people are commiting most murders because of it.

Second place: sleeping with other-man's vifes. They've should ban other-man vifes too.

Third: killing for fun.

Health and Blah Orgs should immidiately ban fun. Fun is dangerous.

And they should ban advertising too.
