It's got a decent amount more power than the MX5 though. And a roof.

I dunno, £25k sounds about right. I mean, less would be nice, but given that it was rumoured to hit the UK at £28k, I'm pleasantly surprised. And £25k doesn't seem like a rip-off, it seems about what I'd expect to pay for a car like that.

My only real issue, if I happened to have the money:

New 86 or used Cayman S? Hmm...

I just don't see how Toyota can pitch a sports car £5k above a Mazda that is 'similar'. It's still a bargain compared to other cars in the segment, and it doesn't have the false stigma that comes with the MX-5, but I just don't see it.

I thought this car wasn't about power? Didn't the RX8 have more power and cost about the same? I think the rx8 was a bit pricy for what it was and the gt86 is an even smaller package.
The MX5 also has a hard top. It's 7,000 more than the soft top.

I think that they priced alittle high because a lot of people are interested in it, so Toyota thinks they can sell it for more money and people would still buy it.
 
Not that it really means much, but if we cross reference some prices for other Toyota products...

2013 Prius: £21,055 vs $24,100 (.873)

2013 Land Cruiser: £62,285 vs $69,920 (.890)

2013 iQ3: £14,275 vs $15,995 (.892)


So, multiplying the base price of the GT86 by an average ratio of .885, we'd get a rough-ish guess that the MSRP in the US for the Scion FR-S would be $22,120... Which would probably be more likely to be round-down to $21,995 by the folks at Scion.

Give or take, $21-22K is about what I'd expect in the US, spot-on with where the MX-5 starts here (well, just over $23K, actually)

For those of you wondering what's happening in the ad, the dad is mad that the son got his ugly girlfriend's cooties all over the back seat of his car. He then forgives his son at the end, saying that it's better that he destroyed the interior of his car rather than the BRZ.
 
VW always have the funniest ads but Subaru's ads are always a sort of from the heart type. I love them

It's not really pitching it at the MX5, though. I can't remember whose article I was reading, but one magazine/blog/whatever was describing the 86 next to other ~200bhp coupes on the market, and it was one of the cheapest of the lot.

I think a 200bhp-ish Audi TT is about £2-3k more than the Toyota. There were a few others too that slip my mind, but the 86 ends up being - as you say - a bit of a bargain next to similarly-powered rivals.

Again, not that I wouldn't like to see it even cheaper, but £25k is entirely realistic in my view.

Don't mistake me talking about power as implying it's relevant to the way it drives. All I'm saying is that, compared to the MX-5, the price is justified by the extra power. You could swing it the other way and say that people would likely pay £25k for a 200bhp MX-5. Particularly one with the folding hard top.
 
To me, I like these production models to these cars more than I do the FT-86 concepts we've been used to since GT5's release. The Subaru BRZ looks better to me than the 86 GT/FR-S, but I love both cars.
