Security Camera DVR Build *Update 2-23-07 With Pictures!*

You gave a link to the Geovision capture card, but you didn't explain ANYTHING about what the $3200 system consists of, just that it doesn't include the PC. Does it include the card? That would make the card you linked to redundant.

From your description I'm going to assume the $3200 system is not PC based at all, but has its own DVR unit. OTOH, why would it say that it doesn't include a PC, unless that's a conclusion you made?

As for the Geovision, it's pretty good stuff on the LAN, you can monitor all your cameras from any PC. It has a web interface, but unless you've got T1 or better bandwidth, don't expect any useful frame rate while monitoring, and don't expect anybody to be able to actually USE the Internet connection you're monitoring through. The geovision makes NO attempt to throttle itself back, it crams as much as it can down the pipe. With most asymmetrical Internet connections, the upload side will be pegged as long as the cameras are being viewed. It has settings to reduce bandwidth, but not by specific frame rate or resolution, just high, medium, low, and even low will max out a cable modem upload line.

This is based on my experience with a customer I set up a Citrix server for, but another vendor was responsible for the Geovison, already in place when I got there. We had to set them up with a second cable modem at each store and a static routing table so the video traffic is on one connection, everything else on another. I was not impressed with the off-site usability.

We just put a system in at my work that is a DVR box, not a PC, but it has a network connection for web-based monitoring. I was not involved in the setup, so I can't give any more details than that. Sitting here at home I don't even know the brand name, but I can get it Monday if you're interested.

Thats what had me lost too. I called up the company who makes the SYSTEM and they said the apporite card is included and was a mistake on their part for not "updating" it on their site. So now I find out I dont need a new card. :) (Saves some stress and cash  )

Sorry I was in a hurry so I forgot to include. The $3200 system is without PC but is PC based. There is another one that is $4300 thats PC based but I didnt want to pay around a grand more for a Pentium 4 with 512 MB ram and 160 gig HDD.

I believe we will have FIOS and from what I heard my father say its something like 500 bucks a month and it's pretty fast judiing from our other properties. So we are good on the internet part.

Yeah the off site usability is kinda crap but its one of the requirements that we have on the "list" Also I want to make this be PC based as I think its more cheaper no? Unless I can make it a DVR based with 1.6TB of space for around 700 I'll pass. Also if it isnt too much of an hassle then the company name would be a bit helpful. :)

Also my current plans for the PC are:
C2D Processor (E6300) - $188
Motherboard - $119 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813128017
1 Gig RAM 240 pin - ~$100
128 MB Graphics Card ~$50
4 X 400 gig Seagate HDD (1.6 TB Total) - $480

If anyone can help me find any of those parts cheaper then PLEASE help! Also I need a good suggestion for a 128 MB Video Card that is PCI Express.

So far the total including the cameras and what not has come out to be close to $4,200 Just a tad bit over what I hoped for. :(

BTW I am using Intel as the camera system people say it MUSt be a Intel and no ready made Dell, Compaq, or Gateway....for some odd reason.

So now I need help from anyone that can with building the computer as in find the parts for cheap and getting some RG59 cable for cheap. We are estimating around 2000 FT worth of cable. But I want to buy just 1000 at a time.

BTW thanks wfooshee for your help and input. If all goes well I will post pictures of everything when I order it and when I get the equipment withing 2-3 weeks I think. Althought we might just order the stuff in like 1-1.5 months the cable is a must for now.

Here's what we set up: Samsung SHR-2082

Seems to work well, but I don't think off-site use would be any good at all, unless you have the bandwidth. We set it for motion-triggered recording, so it doesn't give us hours of nothing to scan through. We also used IR illuminating cameras outside, for 0-lux capability.

Nice. Its pretty slim. I was thinking about using that motion triggered recording as well but my dad said he wants full 24/7 recording for some odd reasons even though I told him it would not be really that wise to have full recording. I also decided to downgrade the HDD's from 4 400 gig HDD's to 4 320 gig HDD's my dad said he wanted a full months worth of 24/7 recording but I told him thats a bit crazy and just said we can save $160 USD and still have 3 weeks worth of 24/7 recording. Also I dont think we are getting anything like T1 at home even though I would want it so I guess that remote view is kinda out of talk? Altough it would probably just lag a bit here and there I suppose.

BTW this is the type of cameras we are getting

12-Color High Resolution Indoor Mini Dome Cameras 420 Line Res.
4-Indoor/Outdoor Color Day/Night Bullet Cameras with 40' Night Vision

Even though this may seem like alot of cameras I dont think this is enough and we may either have to upgrade to 18 - 20 cameras or get long range cameras for the parking lot. I saw some that do 500 FT supposly for around 300 USD which is a steal compared to what I have been seeing on the net. Also I think we might get about 2000-2500 FT of RG 59 cable sometime next week if time permits and just install it with my brother, dad and myself. Because if we tell the electricans they will end up doing it in the wrong place so you want something done you gotta do it yourself I suppose?

Also I am a bit lost on this but I need help building the C2D computer which will be the "DVR" for this setup.

So Far here is the setup Config:

The Power Supply is the main thing I need help on! PLEASE HELP ME PICK WHICH IS THE CHEAPEST THAT WILL BE ABLE TO POWER ALL OF THIS AND ABOUT (2) 120mm and (2-4) 80 mm FANS!!!

So my question can someone list for me what would be the cheapest WORKING configuration out of all of those please? This is a very important build for me as it will be a security camera PC based DVR. Thanks alot for the help guys!

I see absolutely no reason to record 24/7. You come to the office Monday morning and find a broken window, you've got 48-60 hours of video to look at!! Why record dead air? Why use up the disk space? Use motion trigger, get about 50 times the time, and find an event much faster.

As for viewing over the Internet, they don't just lag, they freeze. Think of watching streaming video over dialup. Many of these boxes apparently don't have a reduced setting for the web, they assume you're on the LAN. I haven't even checked ours over the web, I don't know if it listens on a port or if I'd have to VPN in and get its private IP. On the LAN, it's about 2-4 fps on each camera.

That Geovision card tries to keep full motion, which is the thing I hate about it. It absolutely swamps the wire it's connected to.

I have a Geforce 6200 128MB PCI X16. It's around $50. It plays Call of Duty 1 and Live for Speed just fine. If you aren't playing games, it's alright.

Dual VGA out with S Video out so you could have 3 monitors if you pleased. I get 6262 3DMarks in 3dmark03 with this card, 512MB of DDR266 (Which is drastically holding my system back) and my AMD Athlon 64 3400+ on an ASUS A8R-MX board with a Coolermaster True Power 450 PSU and 1 120mm fan, 1 80mm fan, with a Rosewill CPU cooler running at 3200rpm.

If you need more info, drop me a PM and I can try to help you the best I can. :)

Thanks for playing, but that has nothing to do with security camera monitoring, i.e. a single card with 4 or 8 video inputs.

Aight well an update guys. Finally had the time to get some wires. :) RG 59 cable with power. :) 1500 ft for now but will need more around 2500 FT but this will be good enough for now. :)

Also pictures of the cableing to prove that this is serious talk and not just BS. heheh :)

BTW this was thrown into the van instead of the truck incase it rains overnite or someone steals it and what not. :)

The place this is gonna be at is not gonna be closed even on week ends. Another thing I will try and convince my dad about the motion trigger. Only about a month away from getting the actual computer and camera stuff I believe. Delayed again. :(

That sounds like just what I need man! I am sending a PM about the place you bought it from rite away. :) 3 monitors? 👍 Although I probably will just go with (2) 19" LCD monitors as they are crazy cheap. Around 200 USD on Newegg.

Yeah but it will help for viewing the screen on monitor(s).
