Just curious if any of you would pay (like xbox live) in order to get better servers?

Hell no! Sony are being miserly by not providing servers for its games.

All first party games should have their own dedicated servers, simple as that. If third party games developers want to as well, then that's fine too.

Don't worry about paying either, I'm sure we will all have to once the 'war' is over...

If they'd give me a package I'd happily install a server on one of my LINUX boxes, like we used to do for Unreal.

My thoughts exactly... And I have the bandwidth to prove it available as well..

Don't think they will release such a thing though...

Honestly, if they made it as good as Xbox Live, yes I would. That’s and the controller are the ONLY things the 360 has over the PS3 in my opinion. But I'm fine with the way it is now. A sub par but adequate online for free rather than paying for a good one.

Also Jolt and BW (or whoever is the cool hosts these days) could lay on servers. I'd love to be in a racing clan with a private server and independent leagues and stuff but, lets face it, it's sony - aint gonna happen :grumpy:

Maybe if we promised to install a rootkit along with it...

it should stay free, when people are 'server' they should not have the option to stop!

If it stays free then when people are the host they should be able to host more than one race, choose next and kickban idiots.

Free=pub
pub=lame

This formula is the moores law of online gaming - it's never been broken

I don't know why people complain. I think servers as for now are good, It's not worth money putting on LAG free servers and etc since when I use to pay for Xbox Live it still laged. Only thing I'm waiting for is that Patch for Private racing.

So yeah Free is good.
Pay is bad..
I don't know why people say Xbox Live is a lot better since you pay 50 dollars a year and you get advertising on the store menus, as well heck a lot of lag when I Use to play my Halo 3 and gears of war and lot other games....
PS3 is free, and 40 people servers in Resistance or 32 in Warwhack and NO LAG!

Free is good my friend, free is good :)

Just to add, I think Prologue lacks with good clean connections since its only a Prologue and not full game, I think thats why its still not polished enough.

I say I'd pay for it, however I'm new to computers and I'm not very good with them. If it dosen't have a spark plug or piston then I'm basicly clueless. I like the PS3 the way it is because its simple and realativly easy to use and understand. The only reason why I would pay for online services on the PS3 if the lag was less evident and maybe an option to boot or kick players who ruin your gaming experiance...no matter what game it is your playing. I don't know if that option would ever be possible even if we did have to pay for it. I those options weren't available then I say leave well enough alone.

Not everyone should be able to boot someone off, that could turn into a dissaster! I dont find that much problems with lag, other games i play have it a lot more on the computer & ps2, ps3 has been very good so far for me :)

I see no point in paying for the service. It's fine the way it is, the only reason I would pay for it if I got some bonus like online storage or free game updates etc... other than that I have never thought the free system lacking in any way. Paying for it will not solve any of the problems most people complain about, LAG LAG and oh yah LAG.

I would gladly pay $4.xx a month for a Xbox Live like service. Especially if it would cure the absurdly long system updates, and game updates. Honestly I don't use any one system more than the other, but it just depends on what games I'm playing. If its an online game I go for the 360 version, since almost everyone has a mic, and my friends are all adults. Not sure about my PS3 list almost never actually spoke with any of them, and unfortunately not played online with them much either. It can only get better, so if its still free when its better, I'm all for that to.

By the Nox, your right, Xbox Live does have lag now and then, mainly when playing with other countries. Acceptable imo, since its hard to get a low lag GT5P game going in the same country. I wish PD would not allow the slow connections to race online, I think they are another reason the lag is present.

This guy knows what he is talking about. I agree with everything he said. It still lags on xbox and PS3 is fine...Sure, you get lag sometimes, but for the games i play it isn't enough to matter. Honestly, i haven't even played a game where it even bothered me much, including prologue. When it lags, the other cars shake a bit, but that doesn't bother me...With the economy as poor as it is, adding any type of expense like "online play" would be a poor decision. People are getting PS3 because it is free online...

Can't agree with on that, though the rest sounds okay. I know the freinds of mine, me included, bought the PS3 soley for the BD player and exclusive games. I think there are many more things the PS3 does, much better than its free online service.

Two of my friends recently jumped into the console world. One of them went for the Xbox 360 because he liked how it felt more than the PS3 (feel of the controller, interface, etc) and it was cheaper, but thinks paying to play online is stupid, therefore he hasn't been online yet. He said if he wasn't happy with GTA4, he would probably sell his 360.

The other fell off his chair when I told him he'd have to pay to play online with the Xbox 360. He bought a PS3 and is satisfied, though he constantly complains about "waiting 30 minutes to install before playing". :D

But back to the original subject, no I would never pay to get a better service, especially when other PS3 games offer better features while remaining free.

QFT.

And price isn't an issue either, Warhawk has much better online features for free while the game cost the same. $40

no i wouldnt pay for online. everyone complains XBlive is so much better because you pay for it but there missing the fact that they have had a 5 year head start. also paying for it wont help with lag as much as everyone says it will. it should, in my oppinion, be the responsibility of the game developer to provide the servers for online play not sony or microsoft. and i noticed someone mention if it would help with the long download times of the system updates it most likely wouldnt. the updates are normally rather large and include alot of security updates so they will always take sometime to download. though i am impressed by sonys security there the only system that hasnt even been scratched yet when it comes to hacking it and thats a bonus when it comes to online for i dont have to worry about cheaters while XB which you pay for has been hacked (not fully yet but far enough) and there are quite a few cheaters on there. sure the XB you can listen to music ingame and message and all that good stuff but i really dont have a need to message my friends ingame matter of fact i get annoyed when someone messages me while im playing. i look up to see i got a message then all of a sudden i crash cuz i was mid corner or i get shot in the face or something. but sony has already confirmed the in FW 2.40 (whenever that will be) that ingame messaging (hope that means full XMB support) will be added. also sony is working on home (which i could personaly not care about to much) which will be included free aswellso sony seems to be doing alot more IMO for its customers for free then XB is doing.

so imo paying for the service is just nonsense if you going to charge me a few hundred dollars for a system i feel online should be free.

I would like to pay for it, if the money would be used to speed up download speeds. The amount of time it takes for the updates is unacceptable. What takes the xbox 4 or 5 minutes takes the ps3 literally 5 or 6 hours. I have been downloading the haze demo for 2 days. While downloading haze on the ps3 I have downloaded an hd movie at 7 gigs, the bourne demo, the grid demo, and 2 or 3 video trailers on the xbox.

If my money would be spent on fixing that problem i would have no problem at all paying.
Really, if it runs as slow as it does now, imagine how bad it will be when home gets released.

I'm pretty sure the problem is sony - they are legendary tightwads when it comes to stuff like this.

EA know which side their bread is buttered and will happily lay on good bandwidth servers for their top titles because they realise that a good online experience will boost sales - it's a fundamental truth that Sony would do well to learn but no, they decide to implement some kind of half baked peer to peer system and trade on the back of OUR bandwidth. This is so full of suck and fail on so many levels that it's exactly the kind of thing I'd expect from them.

Come on Sony - give a little back pls!

I'm now to the point that nothing but updates get DL'ed on my PS3, every demo/ trailer is done on the 360. I to tried to DL the grid demo on the PS3, but after 2 hours it was only at 8% I remembered why I haven't Dl'ed anything on it lately. It was 45 mins in before I got to play GT5P with a system update and game update, whereas with the 360 i had a system update to perform before playing GTa4....it took less than a minute. 2 different console using the same hardwired connection and that big of a difference in DL speed shows me I'm getting my $4.16 a month out Xbox Live. Why would anyone not pay that measly amount even if it only increased DL speed..... by roughly 400%💡!

I did just have another system update this morning, it only took about 5 minutes to download and five more minutes to install. That was at 6 A.M. That's not to bad. But you should not have to open specific ports, and Download at low peak hours just to have it go fast, that's what the $4 a month does for you. 1 min download time for a system update before playing GTA4 on release day. I can't imagine how long it would have taken on my PS3.
