PD knows this full well and needs to improve how they handle lag. There is no need for cars with high ping to behave erratically. Better prediction algorithms, better smoothing, ghosting to prevent accidents and better handling of penalties resulting from lag.
Because this is sooo easy to do..

When I still worked in GPS applications a big part from it was to detect and fix noisy signals based on the fact that cars usually follow roads and are limited in possible acceleration / deceleration and maximum g forces. It's pretty basic stuff, yet GT Sport lets cars continually brake the laws of physics.
PD should be lucky to have you managening their multiplayer division. You know, because of your extensive experience in game development.

The game should assume laggy cars stay on the road, not scrape along the wall at full speed. Assume they brake on time as not to lag into the car in front of them. Assume they accelerate in time as not to stall at the apex for the next car to run into them. And smooth out that saw tooth pattern in corners. There is the problem when a laggy car makes a sudden lane change on the straight. If another car occupies any spot that a laggy car glitches into, ghost the laggy car.

So put the car on autopilot every time you lag. Assume all those variables, all that 60 times per second, with 15 cars on track. On PS4.. Sound very similar to a mode we once had- B-spec.

And it can do all that with 19 AI cars on track, with all those variables, at 60 frames per second, on ps4 :)

Of course it's not easy. Is it more difficult than making the rest of the game? Surely it can do better than this

At least it detected the lag here and the car he went through ghosted. Yet how does it come up with that movement solution...

Maybe checkout before race would help, something like PS Now or Share play has it - are you meeting requirements or not...

Ghosting & autoplay if happens while the race, but without affecting DR&SR or distance passed.

There will be always someone using it intentionally somehow, like many are doing in sports games - though here is not so painful for other side like there is...

I'm almost fully stopped to play Fifa or NBA online - I have attack, lagging as hell, they have it, everything ok...
They leading, everything ok, they losing - bb man...

A Sport Mode ban would be too harsh since there are certain cases where players simply can't help their internet connections. However, I do believe that a disconnect would be ideal, especially if they're hopping around the track and causing issues for other drivers. Perhaps in cases such as this, the DR/SR penalty can be relaxed a bit since the connection conditions simply can't be helped sometimes. Or, as others have suggested, tweaking matchmaking so others with similar connections are in the same pool.

I don't know. It seems that any suggestion is bound to alienate certain groups of drivers. Many don't want their racing experience ruined, while others don't want to be penalized for something that might be beyond their control.
