Oh, Rice Rocketeer, Fireworks is perfect for that kind of work. Open the viper logo, click File > Export Preview, and click the little eye dropper with the + next to it (in the lower left corner of the window). Then, move that eye dropper over a white part of the graphic (that you want to make transparent), and click once. Then just export the file as a GIF. Here's the end result, already in our smilies database.
