Do you smoke, dip, or neither?

I try to only smoke when playing shows mostly to pass time since my band ends up headlining a lot and we all get there to see the other bands play. I always have one after doing a suspension or flesh/skin pull, they just have this strange effect after doing something like that.

But I really never just go out and have one because I feel like it.

I had never heard of "dipping" before reading this thread.

After seeing that picture on Wikipedia and reading more about it here, the only person I can think that I've seen doing it is Sheriff J.W. Pepper from the James Bond films.

He's not very cool or a person that I wish to be like & for that reason, I think I'll pass :sly:

I love to smoke, even if I have been paying a little bit of a price for it lately. I couldn't tell you how much I smoke because it varies a lot. Lately since I got my job I've been a pack every two or so days because I have the money, but some days can be less or a lot more depending on if I'm hanging out with my friends and what we are doing. The past two days I've gone through two packs from hanging out with my friends and people bumming from me here and there. Its gotten to the point where when I breath out air you can hear funny noises coming from somewhere in my lungs and throat, but when I breath out smoke it's normal.

I have dipped, it's not all that bad depending on the flavor, but I can never get it to comfortably stay in one place because of how cut up it is, and not being able to swallow is very annoying. Chew is another story, very large pieces so it doesn't move, but it seems to be harsher and it kind of tastes like raisins to me. If I do anything like that I prefer Camel or Marlboro snus. It's convenient because it's in little pouches and you can swallow the spit, great for when class gets just a little too annoying, but still semi harsh on the throat.

Wow, that is crazy that I am the only person to use smokeless tobacco on the poll so far. Interesting.

Smoking ban in public places is great for getting to know more people. Though I presume you'll still be able to smoke outside?

You should be able to smoke outside and I guess I never thought about meeting people because of it. I typically only smoke when I drink though so I'll probably just stop doing it while I'm out. Who knows though.

I used to do it when I worked at the city because all the guys I worked with did it as well. It was sort of a peer pressure thing to fit in I guess. Once I stopped working there I never did it again.

I started years ago when I found a can in my work truck another co worker had left in there, I figured meh I'll try it. I went about 3 miles and had to pull over and get rid of it because I got super dizzy!

Which is worse for your health - Smoking or Dipping?

Well I mate of mine was told by his heart doctor to stop smoking and if he had to do anything he would suggest dip or chew because it doesn't effect your heart like smoking does, and of course it does nothing to your lungs.

So no matter which you choose there are health implications - I see.

Is dipping as addictive as smoking?

I wouldn't really know, I have never smoked but the amount of people I have known not to be able to stop smoking compared to the amount of people I know who have dipped for years and years and just stop. I could stop tomorrow if I wanted to, I have before. The only reason I don't stop is because I like it and have no reason to really stop. I did cut back on how much I use though, I was using a can a day and now a can lasts 2-4 days. But its really the person and not the product, I have known people that do meth and never get off it and I have known people to do meth for years and get off it, addiction is all up to the will power of the person who is addicted.

That's why you should use snus instead

Snus may be less harmful than other tobacco products; according to Kenneth Warner, director of the University of Michigan Tobacco Research Network,

"The Swedish government has studied this stuff to death, and to date, there is no compelling evidence that it has any adverse health consequences. ... Whatever they eventually find out, it is dramatically less dangerous than smoking."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snus

I guess I'm not a big fan of chew or dip and it's not exactly the same, but for anyone who chews or dips I'd recommend at least trying snus. A lot less harmful to your health and I personally like it a lot more.

Ok, so dipping may not be as addictive or "habit forming" as smoking.

Does it not totally kill your tastebuds though? I know you are only meant to hold it between your bottom lip & your gum but I'd have thought the flavour (which I guess is quite strong) would get to every part of your mouth via the saliva produced.

I hope you guys don't mind all the questions, its just I am a bit intrigued by this having only just found out about it.

Don't mind at all mate, it doesn't effect your taste buds at all. It does produce extra saliva but you don't have the saliva all over your mouth, you spit it out. So really it is never around your taste buds. TSNA levels of Swedish snus are almost the same as american dip now so really there is no difference between the two as far as health goes. Most snus users find dip disgusting because its more of a rugged type of form of the snus, basically its rednecks answer to the pretty boy snus :)

Very interesting.

I don't think its very common here in the UK & I don't think its something I will ever try, but an interesting alternative way to get your fix by all accounts.

Thanks breakpoint :)

To each his own and your welcome mate. I don't do it to get a fix though, I really don't see or feel a difference when I do it as far as that goes, I just like to dip:)

I smoke, I use Snus while working, used dip from time to time as well. Skoal peach is tasty, it's just a pain to deal with sometimes.

I really like Snus though, I've actually just gotten a hold of the Marlboro Snus, I've always used Camel, so far I like the Marlboro more, though the portion is small for what you pay. The levels of Nicotine are low as well, though it does fill the gap between when I can get out for a smoke. That all leads to me wanting to get some imported Snus like Skruf and General "extra sterk/stark" because they have a higher level of Nicotine, and 25 pouches for less than I pay for a 15 or 6 pouch pack of Camel and Marlboro, which may drive me from smoking period. Snus is not harsh at all, especially after using it regularly, no spit and no one even knows it's there. And you can drink and chew gum at the same time so I guess that makes me like it even more. I can't stand smoking and chewing gum at the same time for some reason.

So if I'm smoking, it's red Marlboro Special Blend, or Mediums. Any flavor of Snus will do though, I like to change between mint and regular. So far, Camel Frost for the mint because it has a sweet vanilla mint taste, or Marlboro Rich because it reminds me of Maple syrup.

I just can't afford the snus simply because the portions are so damn small. I have got a few cans and I have to use 4-5 pouches at once to equal the size of my normal skoal dip, I hate bandits, I'm a long cut guy.

Who would want to do any of this crap anyway???

People that need a vice or people that just generally enjoy it. I can't tell you how great a cigarette is after waking up, having a good meal, or just not having one for a while. I smoke because it calms my nerves, gives me something to do, and I just plain enjoy it. Arguing the point of why people smoke or dip is just kicking a dead horse. It all comes down to personal preference, and it's really something a non-smoker just wont be able to fully understand.

To me the Marlboro snus has a lot less flavor than camel does, and the pouches are wider so it's not as comfortable. Marlboro has a much better range of flavors, but if I'm gunna buy some it's gunna be camel frost, and only if it's the $3 trail version, way too expensive otherwise.

Exactly. The Marlboro snus isn't available around here for some reason, Marlboro and Newport are the largest selling cigs in my city also so I'm not sure why they haven't tried the market for snus yet...

I was looking round for more info about dipping & found this article about snus which says it can increase the risk of heart disease :odd: but could help stop the smoking habit.

Even though Brand X Snus is less harmful than chewing tobacco or smoking a cigarette, which can result in comparatively lower risk of severe diseases like lung cancer, recent research and the studies show an that using Snus or its derivatives can increase the risks of pancreatic cancer and heart disease when consumed by the people. But the Brand X Snus has a potential role in reducing the habit of smoking, which is unknown to many people who are protesting the Snus usage.

So it looks like there are still some very major risks involved, I see the main benefit of this over smoking is that it can be done anywhere. Indoors or out, completely legally. 💡

I don't know why this isn't popular in the UK. :sly:

I find it very interesting to find out why people would choose one over the other, I work in an industry which has had to adjust to cater to the needs of smokers by providing outside areas at sometimes quite a considerable cost. I agree that it comes down to personal choice. From conversations I have with many different people on a regular basis, I think that if more people found out about it I could see it catching on. Mainly because our weather isn't too good & people don't like having to stand in the rain too much for their cigarettes. :p

i've picked up this smoking thing a month or so ago. I only do it in times of despair or stress. I've had my pack for about three months and still have 6 remaining :)
