Do you smoke, dip, or neither?

i've picked up this smoking thing a month or so ago. I only do it in times of despair or stress. I've had my pack for about three months and still have 6 remaining :)

You sir amaze me

I don't even have six left in my pack and I bought them saturday night. Although I can remember a time when that would have been possible for me. Just don't let it get to ya, I've only been smoking since last August and I'm already at about a half a pack or more a day.

I find it very interesting to find out why people would choose one over the other, I work in an industry which has had to adjust to cater to the needs of smokers by providing outside areas at sometimes quite a considerable cost. I agree that it comes down to personal choice. From conversations I have with many different people on a regular basis, I think that if more people found out about it I could see it catching on. Mainly because our weather isn't too good & people don't like having to stand in the rain too much for their cigarettes. :p

Chew, dip, snus, whatever will never catch on with women though. Every girl that I know is absolutely disgusted by these, much more so than cigarettes.

I buy camel snus only if I'm flying somewhere and know I'll be spending the whole day in the airport. I find my smoking habit to be pretty gross, but chewing and even snus gross me out so much. I guess I'm just obsessed over having healthy teeth and gums, and can't stand the thought of something making tiny little holes in my gums to bring the nicotine into my bloodstream.

Anyway, I'll stick with cigarettes for now, but I really wish I could quit, I've been on a pack a day for years now, and it's not even enjoyable any more for me.

I was looking round for more info about dipping & found this article about snus which says it can increase the risk of heart disease :odd: but could help stop the smoking habit.

So it looks like there are still some very major risks involved, I see the main benefit of this over smoking is that it can be done anywhere. Indoors or out, completely legally. 💡

I don't know why this isn't popular in the UK. :sly:

Well I do know the Swedish have been using snus for over 250 years and if you compare the health of them as a whole to the health of americans as a whole I say snus wins of cigs any day hands down. We have the worst health here ever, most of it is due to poor diet. Poor diet is a much greater risk than snus/dip ever will be. Also the fact that a majority of my ancestors used tobacco every day and most of them lived longer than most people today says something (native americans)

And to Max Powers, in sweden snus is widely used by girls because its not used and seen the way dip and chew is here in the states. Dip is a very crude and gross version of snus basically, snus is more of a "sissyish" type of form of dip or chew, not meaning you are a sissy if you use it but the fact that you can swallow it, it has very little nicotine, and it comes in gum type flavors etc.

Really?! I must be confused.

You must be. There are 4 people in my tribe alone that are fixing to tip 100 and all of them use everyday and have since they were young. That combined with the horrible living conditions on 99% of the reservations that most of them lived on and that equals amazing. The major death reason with my people is alcohol, alcohol is just plain horrible for you, and I'm not saying dip or cigs aren't bad for you but compared to other things including our diets here they are both on the back burner.

Understood.

I may as well contribute to the thread. 👍 I don't smoke(tobacco), but have a few times. The first time I did was a few years ago when I bought a friend a carton of Marlboro Menthols as a gift. I was bored driving and decided to try them out. Smoked probably 4 of the cigarettes pretty much back to back with no effects. Since then i've smoked maybe 4 times, one cigarette each, already intoxicated, primarily because I enjoy smoking that certain illegal stuff and at the time just smoking in general was like a substitute. Never have I recieved that so called buzz or head high you get from them, weird.

Tried a snus once, also no effects.

edit: I guess that means I should vote "No Way on either!"?

Neither, never have and never will. I can't stand the smell and I hate eating by people who are. Even when I was little I wold rather starve than eat when there was an ash tray on the table.

Same.

Wow, that is crazy that I am the only person to use smokeless tobacco on the poll so far. Interesting.

Smokeless Tobacco...

That could be the answer.

You hear the pro-smoking argument of "If people want to smoke, it's their choice", but that is invalid, as people who don't want to smoke will have to breath it in etc. (And some, find the smell disgusting, it sometimes makes me want to puke). Smokeless Tobacco though, people can get their fix without bothering others (The littering is a problem with cigarrettes aswell).

I do neither. I'm 15, and too young to start smoking, at least legally, but it's a habit I'd rather not pick up. The image of my lungs being coated in tar, that's not for me, and smoking is quite simply, very expensive, and I'm not going to have the funds to pay for it later on.

Neither! I don't even do burnouts in my car, so no smoke there either!:p

Neither but it seems to be cool for most girls to be doing it. They tell me that it is a turn off if guys do it but its ok for girls to do it. There are of course, some guys that do it and a few girls who dont. I hate the smell so I dont see why I would ever start.

It's one of the 2 biggest turn-offs to me, for a girl to be smoking.

Hey hey, there are plenty of Aussies on here that don't even own a Holden Ute, like yourself, don't get started on me.:p:lol:

Just joking around of course.;)

both, actually.

i came from an era where it wasn't "morally incorrect" and the tobacco companies had their spins going at full speed. growing up in a cloud of Nicotine (which, StigNumbers, is worse for you than the tar they have now proven isn't the bad part), it was practically a foregone conclusion. *grin* the one I avoided was the family hook on alcohol.

i got into the snuff when smokes got into the astronomical price level. it lasted a lot longer than a pack did, and actually cut my cig habit way down. throw in the fact that my mother has a hypersensitive nose and could smell the little cigars I switched to (they lasted longer as well as being cheaper), and i've been dipping for a few years.

oh, it's called "chew" around here, though you don't actually chew it (they used to, though)

Hardly. It's something you wouldn't understand but smokeless tobacco is nothing like a cigarette. Yes you are getting the nicotine but nicotine isn't the only reason people smoke. The action and feeling itself play an enormous role in why people smoke.

I usually only use snus when I'm stuck somewhere and need to take a little bit of the edge off, but you can be damn sure I'm having a cigarette once I'm able to.

If it's a public place you typically have to put up with far more vile things then smoking. But going along those same lines you could say swearing in public should be banned, I mean who wants to hear that. Same goes with displays of affection, music, or even just wearing certain clothes. You just have to deal with things when you are in public.

And really where do most people smoke? The bar, nightclubs, etc. If you are a non-smoker and don't want to be around that then don't frequent those places, or frequent places that have banned it.

And have you ever seen someone use smokeless tobacco? They spit constantly and it's fairly disgusting, so that can bother others too.

Are you kidding me? That produces one of the best smells known to man!

I don't use dip for the nicotine, but for the reason you said right there, dip isn't like a cig but I use it for the same reason, the action etc.

Just putting up with most people in public without me getting arrested is pain enough. I don't care if people smoke but if your dumb enough to do it right beside the door of a restaurant etc. then they deserve to have some big dude tell them to get the F--- away from the door before they can't open there jaw wide enough to smoke. And I don't spit everywhere, I don't even need to spit if I don't want to. And if I had to go outside of a restaurant I wouldn't stand right beside the door and spit on the walkway unlike 90 percent of smokers standing right beside the door spewing smoke into everyone walking in or out, that would just be a ahole move wouldn't it:crazy:

No Way on either! 👎
Especially after watching my grandma and dad die from smoking. I just dont know how someone can watch another person die from something like that and still smoke. While my dad is in his death bed on life support, on his last night, my brother and sister both go out and have a smoke and still smoke. Seems like watching someone else die from what you are doing would be a wake up call to quit. I just dont get it. I really dont get it. :dunce::dunce:
No one smokes in my house, no one smokes in my vehicles and I dont like to be around smokers. I guess if you are dipping at least we dont have to breath it. Thats the only optimistic way to look at people that chew over smoking. It really kills me seeing people smoke around their kids. My mom and dad both smoked and it was misreable growing up with that. My mom quit about 14 years ago and she is still around. My dad didnt quit..

I agree with the smoking around kids. I remember when I was a kid sitting at Huddle House while my mom worked waiting for her shift to end having to sit there with the entire place full of smoke from the coffee drinkers and trying to eat a grilled cheese in all that smoke. She smoked like crazy, I really hate seeing people going down the road in the car with a baby in the back just puffing away, if your that dumb I really feel bad for that kid.

(which, StigNumbers, is worse for you than the tar they have now proven isn't the bad part)

There's a new drug on the streets, and it's got a side effect of covering your skin in a nasty slime that smells horrible. The drug is also naturally toxic.

I don't know about you, but I'd be more concerned about the slime creeping up my body than the constant toxicity of the drug.

Same thing applies here, I'm well aware that nicotine is quite bad, but I'd be more concerned that my lungs are gaining traits not unlike the road that I drive on.

stig: actually, it kinda works in reverse. all the tar gets worn OFF the highways :P

Me, i don't smoke, no drugs ever.. not even single aspirin for past 2 years.

TB
That's because aspirin sucks!

PainAid is where it's at.

Actually hydrocodone is where it's at.

Its really cool to see the numbers of the poll, especially how many of you don't smoke:tup: And the numbers that do dip(me):)

I am a regular smoker, my packs last me between 2 and 4 days and I have cut down in the last year. I really don't like that I smoke but somehow I got sucked in by its allure at a young age at 15. I do enjoy the feeling of a good bogie on a nice drive, with a beer or after a meal but I hate how I smoke whenever I am bored too, for a lack of a better term, fill up time. I know that the cig wont make me lightheaded because enough time hasn't past for the nicotine to have an effect but I have one anyways.

I also occasionally dip long cut with my college suite mates after we get back from the gym and before the shower, kind of like a bonding time where we chill and watch TV and talk. Dip is really potent and I quite like it but I don't wanna make a habit out of it. Its too annoying to go about my business with a cup to spit in.

I also have used Camel snus before and its okay but isn't strong enough to give me a buzz. I used it before when I quit smoking last year to take the edge off and it worked well, but didn't give me the buzz.

I smoke cigars on very rare occasions with my dad, best friend and his dad at family events and parties, and thats really cool. A few shots of aged liqueur and a good cigar with them is really nice, good bonding time.

As you guys can see I like my tobacco products but I spent a night in the hospital with my roommate who was ill and I watched for 13 hours as the man next to us slowly died of lung cancer as his wife watched crying. Really a life changing thing to witness. I know I may be young but my family has history for heart problems so I am trying to quit smoking by summer or so. I will most likely wean my self off with dip then snus and use them when I would normally smoke. Also running everyday is a good way I keep my mind off the urge. I have done it before and can do it again. The only reason I started again was because me and my girlfriend broke up and I was really upset and pissed so I started again. Very dumb move.

I am really temped to order this. Its a really strong Swedish Snus made by the company "Skruf"

A description of this Snus
"Skruf calls Xtra Stark Portion Probably the strongest snus out there. Why they won't come right out and say how much nicotine it has is a mystery to me. If it's a new marketing idea, I don't like it.

Since the highest nicotine snus on the market as of this writing is 17mg/g, Skruf is implying that Xtra Stark Portion has more nicotine (or more Free Nicotine) than others at the high end of the Extra Strong snuses.

To make this extra strong snus Skruf uses specially selected tobaccos to give the rich taste and higher impact! What a nic hit indeed! Try the first portion at home sitting in a chair with your seat belt on!"

This is really tantalizing considering its under 4 dollars a can. By the way it is described it would kick the pants off even American Long-cut tobacco, which I feel is pretty strong. The only thing that is holding my back is that I don"t have a card to order this stuff. One of my roommates is an avid Snus user and I may see if he wants to go halfsies with me on a can. If its good I may get a roll of 10 cans.

I was just looking at the same stuff yesterday! I was thinking about ordering some in 2 weeks when I have a little extra cash to do so. If you get it before me let me know how it is, I will do the same of course.

I do not smoke regularly, but I have had a few...maybe 5 total. They were all after I had imbibed quite a few drinks though. I can't smoke anyway as I discovered about 2 years ago that heavy cigarette smoke triggered asthma in me. I moved into an apartment where the previous tenant had been a very heavy smoker. The management said that they shampooed the carpet and repainted the walls, but the apartment still smelled very heavily of smoke. It also had shared ventilation, and I was the only person out of 10 units that didn't smoke. After about 3 months of living in that, I woke up one morning and could barely breath. Went to the doctor and he told me all the cigarette smoke must have triggered asthma.

That said, I now love the smell of a just lit cigarette. I also used to be disgusted by cigarette smoke, but now every time I smell it, it doesn't bother me.
