Horrible, working ar Walmart during Black Friday. Sales started at 8pm a day early. Give out a few years and it'll start Wednesday.
Actually over here, they had it over the entire
weekend. I pity the sales staff who work the big boxes, having being there myself; it's a gruelling, thankless job with counter-biological hours, a most routine and mundane form of tedious image streaming, day after day, and with a wage structure that quite often competes with sweat shops, taking into consideration what the wage eventually has in purchasing power.
It's a job, of course, and must, as any job should, be done well - but we've lost sight of the notion that sheer consumerism is not the end product. We've forgotten that our emotional well-being comes primarily from each other -whether via a wave, or a kiss, or an electronic message, or even - dread the thought - actual human contact such as the meeting of the eyes with a smile.
Customers today are ready to trample down somebody to get to something that's five bucks cheaper than on another day. As well - if you scan the sales - most of them really aren't. Customers come in already half-peed from the wait or the crowd. The sales staff, due to the trickle down effect of greed-laced power, are at the bottom of this raging pile, and usually get the brunt of it from both sides - management
and customers.
Black Friday? C'mon - we need an
excuse to shop?
There are Liquidation and Clearance stores open everyday.
I hung out blissfully at home with my family through the weekend, did some groceries at a store where there was no mention of it in the store Flyer, watched a few races, moved some stuff around at home, and after having glanced at all the Black Friday Ad Flyers from the various Big Boxes and realised that all the sales were scams, threw the bunch into the Recycling.
At least I did my bit over the weekend to give the Retail staff out here a break.
