Mhhmmm... Prius-y.
Seriously, the only thing wrong with the Prius compared with your common Corolla-Civic-Sentra-whatever is that it costs way too much. If you're getting it for free... score!
Quiet, good AC, great fuel economy, good acceleration for a 1.5 liter engine (accelerates as well as a 2.0)... and oh, did I mention that regenerative braking means your brake pads will last... like... forever? Oil changes happen less often, too. If you actually needed a car just to go from A to B for ten years (and yes, battery stays under warranty for most of that time, and failures are incredibly rare), you could do lots worse.
Hell, if your sister hates it... buy it from her. Family discount... say $10k.

The Kugel Komponents V8 Focus is an FR... and the price of the crate engine they shove in could buy you two or three more Focii. I'd just stick with repairing whatever needs to be repaired on the Focus, maybe stick some tasty rims and new suspension bits on it, and call it a day. Or turbocharge it... should take about 200-240 bhp without blowing up. And, even with the cost of a new clutch, shouldn't cost you more than $4k-$5k.
EDIT: if it's a sedan, it should have better rear end traction with the V8 kit than the hatchback does...
