So.... My sister just won a Prius

Mhhmmm... Prius-y.

Seriously, the only thing wrong with the Prius compared with your common Corolla-Civic-Sentra-whatever is that it costs way too much. If you're getting it for free... score!

Quiet, good AC, great fuel economy, good acceleration for a 1.5 liter engine (accelerates as well as a 2.0)... and oh, did I mention that regenerative braking means your brake pads will last... like... forever? Oil changes happen less often, too. If you actually needed a car just to go from A to B for ten years (and yes, battery stays under warranty for most of that time, and failures are incredibly rare), you could do lots worse.

Hell, if your sister hates it... buy it from her. Family discount... say $10k.

The Kugel Komponents V8 Focus is an FR... and the price of the crate engine they shove in could buy you two or three more Focii. I'd just stick with repairing whatever needs to be repaired on the Focus, maybe stick some tasty rims and new suspension bits on it, and call it a day. Or turbocharge it... should take about 200-240 bhp without blowing up. And, even with the cost of a new clutch, shouldn't cost you more than $4k-$5k.

EDIT: if it's a sedan, it should have better rear end traction with the V8 kit than the hatchback does...

Wait, what? The Prius was sitting at the bottom of the Road and Track 0-60 times until the ForTwo scored a time two and a half seconds slower. I "raced" one a while back and I was clear to merge in front of him by the time I was through the intersection.

2.0 AT versus Prius 1.5 AT. I've VBoxed the thing. 10 seconds flat, torque-braked. Most 2.0 ATs I've tested, Mazda3, Corolla, Lancer, Caliber (11.6, if I remember right), etcetera, cut between 10-11 seconds. This is all without wheelspin, mind you... (and usually, only diesel 2.0s have enough torque to spin the wheels through the automatic box without a disastrous drop-clutch style launch). The Civic 1.8 AT claims about 140 bhp (versus the Prius's 100+), yet cuts a 10 second time on our V-Box.

What does Road and Track say it does? And are we talking about the soon-to-be-replaced model? Because, AFAIR, this one's much quicker than the old ones.

Of course, once up to highway speeds, the electric motor doesn't give you as much assist, but it doesn't feel any worse than most compacts. It's slow, yes, but it's not ungodly-slow, like the Aveo or Forenza.

The Prius is the old one, which they tested back in 2006. 0-60 is posted at 9.7 sec and 0-100 is 46 sec. R&T certainly isn't the final authority on base model cars but some comparisons are the Versa 1.8 at 9.1 sec, and a Fit Sport at 9.0 sec.

But some of those times are to be taken with a grain of salt, because their time for the GTI is a full second faster than what VW claims.

And looking on Wikipedia, the 3 can pull 8.5 seconds. I can't seem to find anything else though. The manufacturer sites are littered with things saying thirty-something MPG but not a 0-60 time to be found.

The Focus is free... it gets good mileage... its FUN to drive and well its FUN!

I have a Focus 2.0 (Euro spec), the mileage isn't that great. Mine averages around 23mpg, but I live in a relatively built up area with very busy roads during the day.

Sorry about double post, I thought the posts would auto merge.

The Fit and Versa are subcompact... well... the Fit is... I don't know how the Versa is classified. The Mazda3 2.0 manual will do 8.5, but the automatic can take between today and sunday to do the 0-60.
