Got The Island today & was better than i remembered this would be in my top 5 of the year, Micheal Bay certainly can direct a car chase!

How come people moan when films have little/no character development, then in Kong when there is a nice hour long segment at the begining of character building people still moan! Films just cant win.
I also thought The Island was a very very good movie. I posted my opinion in "The ISland" thread. 👍 I would put that right up there with kong.

I didn't, I loved King Kong. I liked The Island but I wouldn't rate it as a potential classic, it was too much of a typical action movie imo.

I dont mean to be rude, but The Island & King Kong both have the same set-up for a film.
A looong set-up of character building, then a full on assault of brilliant action & not so convincing CGI, then a quick breather before the final action set piece. Both last to long & both dont have very good endings. And both end up throwing a potentially good plot for action.
So i dont get why The island is a typical action film, and Kong isnt? (other than having a giant monkey obviously).

TwinTurboJay
The Longest Yard...

I know, I know, but I think I may have enjoyed that movie the most.

Hey, that's what this thread is about. The movie you LIKED the most. Not necessarily the "best"

King Kong was acted better imo, also I went into King Kong knowing the story, knowing what was going to happen but it still kept me on the edge of my seat, I didn't know what the full story was in the Island but it never had me on the edge of my seat, and I think it could have benefitted from being a more grown up and deeper film rather than more action focused.

Well, King Kong is an incredible metaphor and makes social commentary while The Island was a lot of the same old evil corporation conspiracy stuff that has been over done in Hollywood.

By the way, what was bad about the ending to Kong? It isn't like it was War of the Worlds.

What was bad about the end of Kong??

Well the last line "beauty killed the beast" errr ye we had worked that out, you went on about it earlier! And a film that manages to clock up 3 hours & then literally cuts off. Just not well done IMO, not really bad, but definately not good (certainly not as stupid as WOTW).
the last line of WOTW shouldve been Cruise going "how the hell did you get here before me!?!"

What did you want, another 10 mins of people crying, a Kong burial prossesion. That line by the way, was there for a reason.

1. Star Wars Episode 3
2. Family Guy - Stewie Griffin, The Untold Story
3. Saw 2

I have not seen many other "big" titles, been more of a gamer than a movie watcher last year.

Forgot about the stewie griffin story, that was Funny as............. well you know the saying.
Glad to see someone mentioning Saw II! But i still cant beleive people sudgest Star Wars III. The script made Natalie Portman look like a bad actress, how do you manage that Mr Lucas! :ouch:

Preserved from the original, I liked it.

In a tragedy, after the subject dies, where do you go from there?

I personally did not want to see the highway department show up with either chainsaws or dynamite (as was done for a beached whale in 1972). I mean, maybe we could see Jack and Ann get married or a million other romantic things involving them but the subject matter had died, the public and paparazzi had desecrated his body, and Carl got in the closing thought. What is left?

Getting her to speak is a good start.

In any film. Her pot plant upstaged her in Leon...

Put her in Emmerdale and you'd make Marlon Dingle look like Sir Alec Guinness...

She does a bit more in the full version of Leon, but I think I prefer the cut version we get over here, the extra scenes arn't that great, and one of thems a bit well, not right.

Dear lord what is wrong with the world! Natalie Portman is a great actress, in not just Leon (although without a doubt her best performance). But there's also the (above mensioned) Closer, Heat, Mars Attacks! (lol). Leon is great, a true classic, especially with the uncut version imo.

I've just watched Kong and Chronicles. Thanks to scheduling difficulties, Kong only showed for one week last year, and Narnia only premiered in this country last week. Here's my updated list:

Last Place (insert any movie you want between this and the next) - Harry Potter: Bring back the Spaniard. Please. This was the worst directing I've ever seen for a Harry Potter movie... first one included.

7th Star Wars Episode III - On the list just because it's better than most other Star Wars movies.

6th The Chronicles of Riddick - pretends to have a serious story, but it's just mindless action fun. Having Vin Diesel doesn't hurt either. Fun Trivia fact: Vin Diesel plays Dungeons and Dragons... no wonder he does sci-fantasy with such verve.

5th Charlie & the Chocolate Factory - Johnny Depp is brilliant, so is the "Charlie", but falls flat in places.

4th Kung Fu Hustle - great Kung Fu. Normally can't stomach wire-work and glossy CGI, but as this movie is so tongue in cheek, it's excusable.

3rd (tie) War of the Worlds - despite having both Cruise and Fanning
3rd (tie) The Chronicles of Narnia - not on the level of LOTR, but a good effort, nonetheless... glad it didn't come off as too preachy.

2nd Batman Begins - the definitive Batman, if you're a comic geek. A great action movie if you're not. Picking Raz Al Ghul as his first villain was a stroke of genius on the director's part. Guess he isn't a one-hit wonder (with Memento).

1st King Kong - My only quibble is that the T-Rex battle is overdone (you'd expect Naomi Watts to have multiple concussions and/or a fractured neck from all the swinging). Otherwise, it was a work of pure genius. It was kind of long, yes, but in my mental cutting room, I can only cite 15 minutes the movie could do without.

In some ways, much better than LOTR. Definitely deserves bigger success than Titanic, but I doubt it'll get it.

 I'd add Underworld right now even though it's from '03 I'd add Underworld Evolutions even though it's not out yet too.

Very much so and most definitely underated. I happen to catch her in The Proffessional which is a kick ass movie in it's self. 👍

May i just ask why people keep voting for Riddick?? it came out like half way through 2004!
Actually thats a film i need to add to the bad but good thread.

I want to see Underworld Evo when it comes out, but aparently its absolutely terrible & there still editing it! even though its due out this week. mmmmmm Kate Beckinsale

Sorry about that... I just copied my list from way back in the thread. You can tell it made an impression on me... I don't normally like hackneyed pseudo-sci-fi flicks.

Underworld was shot as a trilogy in one go, LOTR style, right? I think disappointment with the first installment delayed post-production on the sequels. Did they have to re-shoot some scenes? If so, I hope the second one comes out better. Lot of wasted potential in that one.

Leon rocks. Even with the disturbingly cute "not for American sensibilities" scenes. Definitely Natalie Portman's best. She did okay in "Closer" (haven't seen "Heat"), but I haven't seen her make much of an impression in any of her other movies.

@VIPFREAK: "Leon" is "The Professional". Different titles for different markets. :indiff:
