'The fish market' is a term coined from Socom 2 although i can't remember it it was a fish market or just random little market but it was always known as the fish market. Eventually you learn these names and locations when you play a map enough from hearing it on the comms. I will know the centre area of Crossroads instantly from my S2 experience and similarly with Desert Glory.

Which reminds me, on Desert Glory the hostage building on Socom 2, the 2 small window balconies on the top floor used to have a couple of pieces of wood on the railings between the two which you could climb on and then could get onto the roof of the building, does this still exist?

Now my only wish is that Fish Hook be included at some point as it was my favourite map, S2 vets will know this one as the seemingly heavy biased map to the defenders but being on a large hill the guys storming up are bound to be at a disadvantage and thats why I liked it. The Seals were the attackers who started on a beach and I think the whole level was just great to try and break the enemy defences or as it often was be the last man standing either alone or with my partner along side, claymores set up ready to put up one hell of a fight to the remaining mercs if they charged down.

I've missed Socom, can't wait to finally get back into the action.

The wood is still there so you can get on top of the jail.

If they do add fishook, I hope they make it so you can't jump on top of the building behind the hostage building. People use ot get control of the hostages and then jump over there. The hostages couldn't get up there, and you couldn't take control of the hostages to extract them. I hated that, it really took alot away from that map, when people exploited that flaw in design.

We didn't get much of that in the UK servers, people were generally fair and the only weapons frowned upon were the auto shotgun, grenades launchers (note: not RPGs) and IW which were weapons people complained about, other then that it was anything went. Glitching was rare as was using exploits like that/

M14 + Med Scope + Bipod, my god does that thing drop people well and it got a stunning range on it.

Awesome! The first setup I made was an M14 setup. I've not really given it an outing yet. Since you've given it a good review, I think I will tonight! 👍

The M14 (and 16) have always been weapons throughout the series, if they live up to normal standard for Socom then they're always handy for multi-role players allowing you to go from a normal firefight into a sniper mode without changing weapon, the M16 shares ammo with some weapons to so you never have some far away if ammo sharing on weapons (e.g. M4 ammo being picked up when you have a 16) still works to.

My copy just arrived and I'm now installing it on my PS3, been playing some RSV2 to get into the tactical mood all week and now I can finally let loose on Socom.

More thoughts later when I actually get to do something

Quick tip, go for an unranked game, hang back and follow someone! Nothing worse than sightseeing in a new town only to get shot in the head by a sniper LOL

So, without reading 13 pages, im playing online alot lately, and want a good shooter. Make me want this game. I've never played the SOCOM series before but like what i've heard about using the headset for commands.

Why SOCOM? Does it have 1st and 3rd person?

Why Socom? because it provides the best online tactical experience on PS3, and for me so far, this generation of consoles. Socom has never been about single player and it went a step further with confrontation by being solely based on it's already main focus, online multiplayer.

Socom has always been a third person shooter, however this Socom allows over the shoulder (interchangeable from side to side) and a classic socom view from previous games with the crosshairs kind of above your head. It's simple, effective and makes the character customisation feel worth doing because you know how you look rather then FPS games where you never even see yourself. Speaking of which the customisation options and vast, allowing you to have many different camo patterns on each major section of clothing (top, bottom, head, armor, straps) and your weapon to is customisable with scopes, lasers, silencers, pretty much whatever you like and certainly more then you need. All this means you can basically play how you like, from a lightly armoured sniper, to a heavy loaded out support troop and everything inbetween or even mixing the standard cliche roles up (lightly armoured LMG user for example).

So you can play whatever style you like, that style might be more or less effective in whatever mode or map you're on but you can always do whatever you like. But why do it alone? Socom is a team game so you'll want a clan, Socom has even included bonuses for those in a clan in the form of extra equipment from your chosen faction (e.g. SAS)

It's being on a team, be it randomers or your friends/clan is what Socom is all about. It's like chess with guns accept each player is one piece which makes up your side, you can co-operate closely, or do your own thing, but the better co-ordinated team will almost always beat outright marksmanship. This is the only game a headset is a true neccessity for success, you need to know what's going on or you'll be a sitting duck, so if you're buying Socom and don't have a headset, buy it with the official one.

It's hard to summarise Socom because it's such a deep game, but in short, it's a battle of the minds as much as the bullet.

..........don't want much do you danjama LOL OK heres the pitch........

You want a shooter on the PS3 and you want it for online play, you have 3 options.....
The first 2 options are Call of Duty and Killzone 2, both have exceptional online modes, fantastic graphics and are both first person view games, COD gives you realistic weapons and locations whilst KZ2 gives you a post apocoliptic future with futureistic weapos (but no lazer guns LOL) both are quite arcade like in there pace but playing tactical play is part of the experience though you'll find the majority play it as a "run and gun" game but thats not to say you can't play these games strategicaly as part of a clan.
Right SOCOM........is a completly different type of game. graphicaly it's compitent but not up to the standards of COD and KZ2 and theres NO single player, it's online or nothing, the game it'self plays in 3rd person view and like COD it is based in present day locations with present day weapons......so why go for SOCOM, well it has one feature which if it's what you look for in a shooter then theres nothing to rival it, and thats tactics.....You will see people try and "run and gun" usualy just before they take a sniper round to the head from 200 meters......as described by a member of the forums clan, "matches can be like a chess game" it realy is that tactical, I've seen some quite amazeing matches where a shot hasn't even been fired or games where 32 player fire fights have broke out and people have been diving for cover rather than running at the enemy.
If you want an assault on your senses and an adrenerlin rush COD and KZ2 will happily oblige til the cows come home. If you want to guenuinly be sucked into the experience then SOCOM is the only choice, it's not for everyone, and I would take the time to read through this entire thread if your interestead, and have a read of the SOCOM thread of which your invited to join. But if it's a tactical simulation your after SOCOM is it, if your after a FPS then you may be disapointed.

Posted at the same time as dragontastic so sorry if I repeat stuff LOL

I must type quicker.....I aproached the keyboard tacticaly and tried to out flank it rather than just run and type LOL

 (< supposed to be the laughing emoticon but it won't be until April Fools is over, thanks jordan lol)

I'm about to go on Socom now anyway :) Can't get enough of it.

Well I'm probably done for now, a rather successful days killing but unfortunately my game crashed just as I had started to really get going. I'd had 6 kills for 1 death in 3 rounds of extraction when it just froze during spectating from my 1 death in the 3rd. Annoying but ok it's the first time I've had to reset Socom and it wasn't really a biggy seeing as I really don't care to much about stats on Socom because it's just so much damn fun!

I love the tension, I love being able to use real tactics which actually work (rant: unlike a certain 360 exclusive FPS that seems to think that defending from cover behind a wall is MORE likely to get you killed then charging face first at the defending foe jumping through the air and spraying whatever weapon you can find and/or firing a sniper rifle as if it were a pistol) and it's just a immersive experience which really makes you work with your team. Tonights play has seen my kills up to 87, deaths at 80 (started the night at 56-65 respectively) with some particularly notable rounds where I was, for once, the leader giving out the orders in a 32 player room.

This was my first experience leading any larger then around 4-5 people on any online game to date, now leading 14-15 players most of which had seen more battle then me on Confrontation and it's probably the only game that it will ever happen on. It just sort of came about because I stuck in the 1 game and was just calling out enemies and giving suggestions then before I knew it I was with a team who wasn't talking at all so I started handing out a couple more suggestions and calling out every enemy I saw, every location of any dead friendlies and before I know it I have an entire team relying on my rookie shoulders to come up with the main tactic for each round. There still wasn't enough team communication to win most games but round to round things went well and my general ideas worked but often failed due to weak links in the chain who weren't patient enough to make a slow move. This made things more interesting as a leader as it was me and the remaining players against a much more experienced and co-ordinated team but by the time I left the room the same team was really taking the fight to them, particularly in the final map where we only dropped a round in the first half of the game.

I've learnt alot today or should I say, relearnt my old Socom ways and I hope to keep building on this tomorrow as I have the day off :)

Edit: Staying online for another hour or so, but can't talk on the headset because my parents are tryna sleep next door, i'll still be listening, but i'll be avoiding any private or serious rooms for this reason and sticking to random servers most likely.

When your in a "quiet" room just calling out enemy usualy starts the ball rolling. I find if theres "Rambos" in the team just leave them out of your "plans" work with what you've got as they say LOL they usualy either leave or join in. The ones you need to watch are the ones who thing the L2 button is there so they can chat to there mate about the weather for the whole game. It's hard but threatening to kick them and giving them the reason usualy works followed closely by telling them they can still chat without tieing up the coms by staying close to the person there talking to.....thats my pet hate by the way LOL

Now that were all settled with SOCOM, wowing at the way it draws you in can I just raise a few points.....Firstly SOCOM Confruntation isn't actualy developed by the original Dev team, Secondly a number of the maps are actualy from previous versions of SOCOM. Thirdly this is a budget PSN title.......
Right so ever wondered what the originall SOCOM devs are doing and why they didn't make confrontation? Well quite a few of you will already know what I'm about to say but for those that don'y your in for a treat! Theyve actualy been busy on another title, funninly rnough it's also an online tactical shooter set in a modern day setting.........But this ones a little bigger! so big theyve thrown vehicles in, well with 256 players per game the maps have to be large.......Yep MAG is being developed by the original SOCOM team. Now if that dosn't get you googleing nothing will LOL

Crossroads is a Socom 2 map, Desert Glory is a Socom 1 map. So far I can't think of any others off the top of my head that aren't new, but I've only really played larger maps so far.

Ahh now then, I do love SOCOM and I will be taking to task anyone who says a bad word abot it! But how much potential greatness dose that there MAG have? LOL

No footage about apart from a CGI trailer, but it dose hold some promise also Flash point could be another that could wow if they don't dumb it down for the console market

Yeah, thats the old Socom 2 layout, those dead-ends have now been opened out and a few of the details change such as the fish market (called bait shack on that map) upstairs, a few tweaks here and there but the main layout remains the same for that area of cross roads. I basically know Crossroads inside out as it the most played map on Socom 2 by far, and thats the Socom I played most. Those names aren't exactly common references, take the seal roof was always 'the jumpover' because of the small wall and a terrorist could easily jump down right into the seal spawn. The best way to learn the names is just play public rooms and you'll pick up the reference points and until then, just describe what you see using your compass and other landmarks.

Hey guys just saying thankyou for the replies. I have to admit you have swung me. I'm going to buy it as soon as money allows. I prefer tactical shooters over run and gun games, and ive never played a 3rd person one except for Splinter Cell, so i reckon it could be the start of something beautiful.

Now how hard is it to get in to as a complete noob? Obviously it will be a struggle learning the usual maps and weapons malarkey, i dont mind that, but how are other people to noobs? And how will i meet a good clan to learn with?

Generally, most players will be pretty friendly to noobs, particularly UK players. US players can be disrespectful because they've had the game a long time but it mainly depends on how you act. If you miss an easy kill for instance then you might get a sarcastic comment at worst but if you run around like a hooligan then the abuse might come. Communicate with your team and just say if you don't know something, and someone will usually chip in to help you.

Yeah what he said......allso stick to non ranked respwawn rooms at first till you have the basics down, as for a friendly clan.........well that would be GTP's clan, kellys heroes, we give you free guns and camo too, no honestly! Just shout up when you get the game on the SOCOM clan thread and an invite will be sent by me or any of the officers. You'll find a few of us on most nights plus we happily drag new members round with us and use them as decoys.......ern sorry I ment show them the dangerous areas LOL

Communication is your best tool and don't talk too much over the mic. ( In ranked games) If you run with a group of friends or clan over and over, then you can chatter all you want. But also, run and gun games can be tactical also. If you play with tactics, you could usually see how the other team plays in a round or so. Man, I think I might pick up 2 again because of all this talk. Also, don't be afraid to try other type of weapons. Sure you may not be the best with a sniper rifle but your side arm will get the job done much better.

Yep coms is essential calling out enemy positions and your position is prety much key to any match, keeping it short and sweet is also essential as not to tie up the coms channel, remember though if the enemys close by they can hear you thus alerting them to your position! So sometimes you got to keep quiet. Run and gun is actualy a tactical play in SOCOM as long as your actualy running and gunning to a specific place and not just aimlessly running up and down a street looking for an enemy, thats possibley the easiest way of getting shot! but rushing a location, especialy if you do it un number can be the best way sometimes. though be aware if the enemy have an idea you may be employing run and gun it can turn into a masacre with well placed grenades, claymores or RPG fire, it is allways prefareable to use stealth and cover to runnning accross open ground or into a choke point.
And yes again the guns are a big part of tactical play, but not just the sniper role, suport gunners can be quite effective if used right, as can the SMG close quater guns. Best to start with the standard assault rifle though then try some "dual role" weapons, say the M14 as a assault / sniper role then try some of the more specidic roles. you may find one specific role suits your style of play. In the clan for example Scaff likes to sit off and patiently wait for sniper opertunities then we have Steve who tends to like the heavy suport role, following behind a group then laying down suppresive fire on a location if the assault team get pinned.
Of course then theres your side arm and specialist stuff like grenades, claymores RPGs smoke C4 marker smoke.........all of which again you select dependant on your role. Finaly on weapons how you moderfie them also is essential to the role you want to use them for, big scopes, red dots, lasers, silencers, grenade launchers, fore grips and bipods........theres alot to work on to get the simplest things working for you and more importantly making you a valubale asset to any team your on, be it a clan or a ranked game.
But the MOST essential thing is learning the maps, if you don't know the map your on you will seriously strugle. concertrate on learning a single map first off, not to a great degree, but just so you know the road layout and its choke points. get in a respawn match on say crossroads, in a couple of hours you should know the map enough to not get lost LOL and then you can employ all the other stuff. The game has a steep learning curve and one that will take you weeks just to have the basics of the maps down. this of course means your allways finding something new and adapting and progressing through the game. One week you may be a sniper then swithch to say a heavy gunner as you "evolve" your style through experience.
