Solution for the jitters...

it seems that perhaps the ps2 is being pushed too far, and so perhaps thats why taking the brightness down to 0 is fixing the problem, since brightness +3 in the game is a software step that takes a tad of processing. So perhaps taking as much out as possible will fix it, like music and maybe even taking the soundfx down a knotch or something.

i get the interlacing/jitter (not sure i would really call it jitter, but i believe i saw what people are describing) on my 32" normal CRT, at 480i.. it was most noticable at the begining of races, with the sheared/garbled text.

however, on my projector (panasonic ae700u), i have never seen it happen, at 1080i.

That's what I thought I experienced first too. Didn't happen on my hdtv 1080i screen, but did on my little 23" crt. However when I went back to look at it, it happens at 1080i, although it's not as obvious.

Go to SSR5 and check it out again.

I have another solution. Play at 480p 16x9 if your TV supports it. You'll need component cables. I think it is only the interlaced "i" modes that cause problems. Try 480p (progressive scan) to see if it helps.

I used to get a LOT of jitters during the rolling starts at the Hong Kong and Opera Paris tracks. Ever since using 16x9 480p mode, all jitters are gone. Maybe I am just lucky. Can anyone try this and confirm.

I personally can't tell the diference between 480p and 1080i anyways. I have a 36" Toshiba CRT HDTV.

Can anyone confirm 480p will fix all jitters? I have not seen any jitters since going with 480p instead of 1080i.
I can now confirm that jitters are completely gone simply by using 480p. Any of the "interlaced" mode will give me jitters, but the "progressive scan" mode is completely jitters-free! :)

It's almost like the "field order" is getting reversed for a few seconds.

A single frame of NTSC video is comprised of two fields, field A and field B. Each field is exactly half the scan lines of the frame. This is what makes it interlaced. Standard def TV's interlace each frame.

The effect of these jitters, to me, seems like the fields are mis-stepped or out of position or maybe walking on each other.

I figure this is an interlacing issue since I've only heard of it happening on standard def TV's and those running 1080i, which is higher res, but still interlaced.

Has anyone had these jitters in 480p?

just my 2 bits
idle

I play in 480 just for that reason. Never had it happen even once

I have a unique setup running my PS2 through a video capture card and Dscaler software to a 36" VGA monitor. Since I am deinterlacing the image, the jitters show up as solid black lines that render any text unreadable and are probably a little more annoying than usual.

The monitor can obviously handle 480p, but not the caputre card, and the monitor only has a vga input. I found a VGA cable for my GameCube from some vendor in Japan. Does anyone know if they exist for the PS2?

Does anyone think maybe the ram on each PS2 is different? not in size, but in quality? (bandwidth, speed, etc).

It just strikes me as odd that everyone has different results, I have a version 4 PS2, and I get the jitters, maybe 50% of the time during the 6 cars on the screen. It wouldn't surprise me if Sony produced different ram because it was cheaper or easier to make, while it being possibly even faster or better.

I have a Sony WEGA 32" used with component cables, I believe its in 480p mode. My theory about the brightness thing is that maybe it takes some cpu cycles to increase each pixels brightness.

I use the madcats 19.99 component cables...so maybe the cheap cables are also a cause for concern.

This might sound retarded, but could everyone that reports back on the jittering maybe indicate if they are running normal analog sound-out (through RCA), or if they are using optical-out? Maybe there's a difference occuring there as well?

I'm on a 6-ish y/o panasonic 27-inch TV hooked up through normal RCA video in. I get jitters at the beginning of all the usual suspects (Nurburg pre-race as well). I do have my brightness jacked all the way up and I plan on messing with that tonight to find the "optimal" value.

I like the music-deletig idea and am going to try that.

Me and 2 of my friends have already had slow-down issues during pitting in LAN (we still need to turn network traffic to HEAVY - I don't know what the hell that affects though... ) but once I get together with all 5 of them, I'd like to know the most optimized configuration for everyone to run the game, in hopes of not having any slow-down issues. Also I could see this coming into play for online racing via x-link in the very near future.

I get the jitters and I'm using optical out. I also have no music playing as I use a manual transmission. If i put the game in 480p mode, absolutely no jitters. 1080i mode seems to have them, but they are far less noticable since there are so many more lines of resolution.

OK OK. I only notice this problem when there is a lot going on in the game and picture is dark. Lots of cars, like at the begining of the race. In the dark, like in the shade or a tunnel.

It happens on all PS2s and all TVs. I personally think it is a glitch in the game. Anyone care to expand on this. I have had enough of everyone saying it's the cables...

Just wanna let you know that setting the brightness to "0" on the SCREEN SETTINGS in GT4 worked for my NO MORE JITTERS/Screen BOUNCING weird effects..

My setup:

25" SONY WEGA - NTSC
PS2 Version 9. the latest model of the Fat ones .. with integrated IR and Progressive scan dvds.
SONY component Cables for PS2.

👍 👍

thanks!

..i've come to the conclusion that everyone that said that it was from FPS.. i have to say they were right, because it always happens at certain times, and its always constant; meaning that at that same camera, everytime i watch it, it always jitters...

so i guess it is a way of solving the FPS drop (btw, brightness doesnt help lol.. maybe a tad less, but not really noticeable)

I too think it is a glitch in the game. Does anyone else notice similar jittering on the scrolling text at the bottom of the screen, especially when it is a long line of text?

I think its some kind of bug where the loss in framrrate is not compensated for during interlacing. I really have no idea how it all actualy works, this is just a guess.

OK, this problem has been bugging me since I got the game a week ago. Running through the standard cables into a Toshiba 27" CRT, haven't tried the "Brightness" solution yet. Jitters really bad in B-Spec, but I hardly ever use it. Usually happens at the beginning of a rolling start in A-Spec, but I have had it flow over into the start of the race, but it goes away once I hit the first turn. Has happened only once in the middle of the race, can't remember the track though.

I did e-mail Sony about this asking if there was a solution or if there was a fix in the works. Below is the reply:

"Thank you for writing us.

The graphics in Gran Turismo(TM)4 may experience some "jittering" only during instances where there are a maximum amount of graphic elements rendered on your screen at the same time. With the goal of pushing the PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system's graphics to unprecedented levels, the developers of Gran Turismo 4 have attempted to eliminate the "jittering" as much as possible without
compromising the superb realism, graphics, and stunning gameplay which no other racing game has ever achieved. The developers hope this problem is minimal and does not bother the dedicated fans of Gran Turismo 4.

Sounds like it was a lot worse before release. Probably one of the reasons it took so long to release.

Guess we're probably stuck with the "jitters." :grumpy:

In other words, 'tell somebody who cares'. :D Thanks for posting that jsalda, nice to see Sony acknowledging the problem, at least...
