Just saw this on yahoo and I think it's due to apple maybe releasing a console sometime down the line. Just wanted to see if it's anything that could be interesting.

Vita TV

Smallest game console world ever see

This will fill the gap for those that want to stream ps4 but don't have a vita. It's seems a good idea, but not sure how it will fare long term.

I think it's a great idea. I've been thinking about buying a vita but I may get one of these instead.

This looks awesome. I plan on buying it in the new year along with a ps4.

I like the idea. There have been some games that I've been very interested in on both the Vita and the PSP, but I'm not exactly a huge fan of handheld gaming. This might just do the job.

Only 2 issues I have with it..... Vita UI, lack of 1080p video playback, this should be no problem for a 4 core A9 cpu. The Vita needs PS4's UI, that would be great.

Imagine if they make it in black, then i will look silly next to PS2, PS3 and PS4 standing all vertically next to each other. :sly:

So Sony annouced that Vita TV (now called Playstation TV) will be coming to the US and EU. $99.

I'm kinda excited about it even though I don't have a PS4 because it will do all the Playstation Now stuff and play Vita games. Does anyone know if it will do PS3 remote play as well?

@Robin. I think it's reasonable to assume it'll do PS3 remote play, but I somehow doubt it'll be a headline feature given that the only game I ever had any success playing that way was Pixeljunk Shooter and they just gave away the updated version of both Shooter games on PS4 and Vita for free this month. Which other games were compatible? Tokyo Jungle, other Pixeljunk games, are there more?

In any case, given that the PS TV supports DualShock 4s (the Japanese ones do, apparently, and I can't go back to the DS3 now), I'll probably pick one up. The funny thing is I have still yet to find a Vita exclusive game that I actually like, but as a Netflix/PS One/PSP/Super Crate Box/Remote Play/PS Now player I think it's worth the price.

Yeah the PS3 > PSP feature was criminally under used probably due to the PSP not really having the oomph to make it smooth and useable on AAA games. By the time the Vita rolled round the PS3 wasn't really a priorty anymore but I think its still useful in that it will play all PS1 games and some media. It's good they have made RP mandatory for most PS4 games.

It will be great for Vita games and Playstation Now, just depends on what its going to cost to stream all those PS2 & 3 games.

I managed to stay awake long enough to watch the Sony presser on replay, and yes, it can play PS1, 2 and 3 in addition to streaming the current PS4 game that you are playing. I suspect, however, you can get PS1 classics just like you would on your Vita, so none of my PS1 classics that I bought (16 of them) and PS2 classics will be left behind.

Day 1 purchase for sure.

I didn't say stream as far as PS Classics are concerned. If they are designing this as an one big Vita without the touch pads, and they are, then you should be able to download and purchase PS Classics off the Vita store as if you would if you purchased them off the vita itself. I'll give you the fact that it would have to stream PS3 games because of their large size, but PS Classics as a whole, shouldn't matter as you are storing the data on Vita memory sticks. That should mean that you could interchange sticks that have Vita data and play them on PSTV with little issue and vice versa.

The fact that the bundle package includes a Vita memory stick with the Lego Movie game voucher should be proof enough.

Its a very interesting device. One will most likely end up under.my tv.

Very useful for me as i play my Ps4 on a 46(7?) Inch tv setup next to my couch with my racing chair, but have a 65 as my.main household tv. This will make.life a little easier if i want to play on the big tv.

I said a while ago somewhere else on the forum that PSNow tech (and the presumably equivalent MS system that will follow) will end consoles as we know them.

If this will indeed support PSNow as a future standalone feature (which this article suggests, couldn't find an English source, will keep looking), then we will see the end of consoles over time. Not immediately, but I do doubt that we'll ever see a PS5 or an XBox(Guess The Number).

We've known for some time how much the big publishers loathe the resale market, they'll love the idea of keeping the software/saves on their servers and will likely support this very strongly.

Dodgy Translation
But besides this relatively limited functionality, the TV will be mostly connected to Playstation Now, the future streaming gaming system designed by Sony and Gaikai. The principle is simple; the game runs on servers managed by the game companies and simply streams to the player.

This technology allows users to play games that require a high technical capacity but on a much less powerful system. Playstation Now will, at its launch, play a hundred titles of the Playstation 3, including some of its most popular titles.

Just realised something.

Can this box stream your PS3 from one room to another?

So PS3 in one room and you can use it will any screen in the house?

It does it via remote play, so anything you could remote play to a PSP/Vita, you could send to another tv.

Oh, thats not great then because there is nearly no support for PS3 remote play.

I thought it might do it a different way like act as a decoder to send the info over the local network (ethernet cable etc). In the same way you can get cable box repeaters.

I don't think so. I'm just guessing, but I think the reason the PS4 can broadcast remote play regardless of the game but the PS3 is limited to just a few games is because the PS4 has a hardware encoder, like the NVEnc hardware in Nvidia's Kepler GPUs, and the PS3 has to do it in software which takes up a lot of processor time. The Vita is obviously capable since it can receive remote play from the PS4 regardless of the game, but the PS3's hardware won't allow it.

So the official EU release date for Playstation TV has been announced, the 14th November. The US date is 14th October.

Yet again we getting ripped off. £85 in the UK, only £60 in the US.

For £85 in the US you also get a DS3 and we won't even be offered that bundle.

It's like they wanted me to completely lose interest. £85 with a DS3 would have been nicely priced.
