Can someone clue me up on the black tar-like stuff that creeps onto Spidermans suit and turns it black, what is that, and does it tie in with the Venom or Carnage storylines at all?

Great trailer btw.

It was the origin of the whole Venom/Carnage/Weird stuff.

It's the Spiderman symbiote. In the comics, it's an alien organism that draws sustenance from Peter Parker while providing him a suit that's instant, self-repairing, and which generates its own web.

When Peter realized it was sucking him dry, he tried to get rid of it. I'm not sure, I think he finally electrocuted it off. I then latched on to some loser Spiderman-hating serial killer and became Venom.

God knows how they're going to explain an alien symbiote, or what good it's going to do him as the Movie Version Spiderman already shoots his own web biologically instead of through boy-genius Peter Parker's web-shooters.

Will definitely watch this, though.

Yes this looks like it could be the best yet, I already have the other two on DVD, so this will get added to the collection in 2008 :D

I also have the other 2 on DVD and have watched them many times. I cant wait until this one comes out in May 07. 👍
Good teaser trailer too.

I actually held out on buying the other two on DVD. Once I heard there were next gen HD formats coming out, I haven't bought on DVD since. I'm waiting until good HD movies are out :)

I can't really tell if it's going to be good or bad from that trailer, but it was pretty cool. Sounds like a lot of fans were dissapointed by X-Men 3, I hope Spidey 3 will surprise us in a good way.

The thing about X-Men 3 is they had a different director. The previous one, who finally got everything right in X-Men 2, was hijacked to do Superman.

^^^ Uhh, X2 was a good movie, but I'm pretty sure he didn't "finally get everything right". It was good, but a long shot from right.

Superman, by far, was the better of the two movies. In fact, IMO, Superman was better than all 3 XMen titles...but htat's just personal preference.

The 1 thing I'm looking forward too is how Parker's friendship with MJ will turn out, or with many people in the city given some of them and MJ now know his identity.

Spiderman 2 easily topped the first imo, but it should be interesting to see Venom and Sandman's roles as well as what Harry has up his sleeve now that he has found his father's Green Goblin secret.

Venom.

We go way back to "secret Wars" a 12 issue limited series that had all the heroes and villians being spirited off earth to another planet. They were forced to conduct a war. During that war, PP's red suit was destroyed. THe other heroes had found a room that would regenerate suits, and PP went to find it. Instead he found a small room with a black ball held suspended in mid-air. He touched it and The symbiote spread across him.

He was fine, until he realized the symbiote was making him function at night, and it was violent.

He attempted to kill it by using sound. PP swung into a large cathedral with clanging bells, and the sound killed the symbiote. Unbeknowst to PP, the symbiote leached down through the cathedral and found a new host. Eddie Brock (IIRC).

Brock was another photographer whos career had been ruined (unintentionally) by PP, not a serial killer. EB carried a hatred of PP and when the symbiote found him, they joined up together to become Venom.

While incarcerated, Eddie Brock was cellmates with Cletus Cassidy. A serial Killer and all around deranged guy. During the symbiote rejoining with EB, and breaking him out of jail, it spawned. The time on earth had altered the symbiote, and therefore the spawn had evolved a bit from the original creature. CC and the newly spawned symbiote joined together to become Carnage.

It is interesting that they are introducing the Black Cat/Gwen Stacy into the storyline.

Yes, I have these comic books...

My mistake... sorry, yes, it was sound. The Fantastic Four use ultrasonic guns against Venom in the comics.

RE: X-Men2 finally being right... yes, it was far from perfect, but in that movie, the director and actors had finally gotten to terms with the story and characters. By the difference between X1 and X2, it's understandable that we could've expected much more frm X3, given the same director.

And if Superman is a hell of a lot better than any of the X-movies, that just proves my point... bummer.

👍 Thanks for the excellent clarification. I can't wait to see this movie even more.

Venom.

Excellent. All you left out was his occasional reluctant hero roles when not trying to kill Spidey.

Wiki pretty much lays it all out in great detail for anyone who wants to spend the next half hour reading up on it.

Are they hitting on the Black Cat or just Gwen?

Yes, I have these comic books...
As should everyone.

So, for villains we can be sure that we have Sandman and Venom. They have to touch on Green Goblin or Harry finding his father's stuff in the second movie is pointless, so I am sure we will have the second incarnation of the Green Goblin or possibly Hobgoblin, depending on how they want to play it.

They have said there will be four villains. Current rumor has it as being either the Lizard, because we have seen Dr. Connors, or the latest rumor is Bruce Campbell playing Mysterio in a small part that doesn't play into the main storyline.

Gwen is listed only in the IMDB credits as "Gwen Stacy". Gut feeling is there will be some inclusion in the fourth movie. Perhaps the black cat is only there as an intro for the fourth movie?

The trailer has Sandman, Venom and Green Goblin in it. IMDB does list Dr. Connors as being in the movie. Perhaps, this is where we find out about the lizard/connors and gwen/black cat in preperation for the 4th movie.

Yes, I'm very interested in seeing this movie.
IMDB plot summary
Harry Osborn's insanity drives him the edge and transforms him into the Green Goblin. In an effort to destroy Peter Parker he hires Flint Marko to aid him in his quest. Meanwhile Peter must balance his relationship with Mary Jane and the arrival of a new love interest, Gwen Stacy. The final showdown then pits former best friends against each other as a new villain looms on the horizon.

All around I hope not as every Superhero movie that attempts to introduce the female love interest/superheroine comes off horribly. Perhaps to give her her own movie it works, but I fear this idea of inntroducing Black Cat into the Spiderman movies.

Here is a spoilerish rumor I found. DISCLAIMER: THIS COULD BE SEEN AS A SPOILER BY SOME. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.

The giddy laughter would be mine.

Looks like we finally get some symbiote action. No signs of Venom, though, unfortunately. Sandman looks cool, too.

Anybody have any expectations or thoughts about the movie and trailer?

Ahhh... but there is a sign, or at least a hint...

IMDB.com lists Topher Grace starring as Eddie Brock. Whish seems like an odd selection as Venom always sported a rather musclular frame.

Yeah, but there is no solid visual evidence of Venom in the trailer. That's agreeable, no?

I think what Sam Raimi is going for here is an anti-Peter. Topher Grace is very Toby Maguire like in body and shy nice-guy attitude.

Since Eddie Brock was a competitive photographer who was always jealous of Peter it could be playing on that and having him snap in anger at Peter's success. This is when the symbiote joins him and he becomes Venom, which is essentially the anti-Spidey.

Of course I also never thought I would see a buff Toby Maguire but he pulled that off.

Correct, there is no actual shots of Venom. That said, Kirsten Dunst had a blonde moment and said Topher Grace was a villain, Eddie Brock is Venom, and Sam Raimi has said that we will at least see four villains in this film. Of course, that could mean that Brock becomes Venom at the end and we focus purely on the Green Goblin and Sandman.

Story line rumors that I have heard (SPOILER) include Harry hiring Sandman to kill/hurt Spiderman and then taking on the Green Goblin persona when that doesn't pan out. Duriong this time Peter uses the symbiote suit but realizes it is changing him and so he gets rid of it and Eddie Brock puts it on, becoming Venom. After Venom kidnaps Mary Jane Harry, as the Green Goblin, helps Spiderman save Mary Jane, dying in the process.

I honestly think that a Green Goblin repeat might bore a lot of fans. and they need something bigger. Plus, teasing us with the black suit and no Venom may lead to a backlash.

I think having Venom happen at the end is the way to go, with Sandman, the Green Goblin and another villain, Raimi is risking way overcrowding the film. It sounds great, but try finding them all in meaningfull roles in a 2 hour film.

I think the complexity of it all is what makes Spiderman tick. If he didn't feel like his life was falling apart then it wouldn't be Spiderman.

That and I refuse to wait two years after this to see a Spidey vs Venom fight.

Yeah but the more characters you focus on, the less interesting they are, the less of a story they all get and the less you care you care about them. I'd rather a really goo dfilm now and another if a couple of years, than a below par end to the Spiderman trilogy now. Ofcourse, I'm not saying including Venom WILL do that, I just don't think many super hero films have worked when they've included too many characters because they all become less interesting with the lower screen time they have.

It isn't as if Sandman were all that interesting to begin with.

I'll just have to wait and see. But I want Venom.

Of course, I want a lot of stuff in movies that I don't get. :(

Apparently this is one that I will get.

According to IMDB:
Plot Outline: A specimen from the moon gives Spider-man new powers and a black suit, while Spider-man must battle the Green Goblin 2, Sandman, Venom, and other dangers.

And this picture is up at IMDB and is called SM3_venom.jpg

On the official Spiderman 3 Web site you have to text "Venom" to a certain number to get the mobile content. Too many things point at Venom being in the film for me to let this go as nothing.

Well that's definitely Eddie Brock, I just hope that Venom is either the main guy in the film (barring Spiderman) and the other villains are more sub plot matrial, or that Vemon is hinted at as more of a sub plot until right at the end and he takes over Eddie.

Having too many bad guys and characters all being focused on can spoil a film imo.

I'm sounding a bit negative here, but however they chose to do it I just want it to be a good film.
