The Civic, my young and uninformed friend, is a very good tuning platform. From hitting 9s on the drag strip, to conquering the Pikes Peak hillclimb, to winning AutoX and Road races, it's done it all. It's multipurpose, simple and cheap to modify... A bit like the 30's Ford Roadster.
It's got a double wishbone, 4 wheel independant suspension... the kind of stuff you'd find on an expensive sports car, in an econobox!
Go to an autocross, and check out how many Civics/CRXs/Integras (yup, they're based on the Civic platform) you'll see. They're very good race machines, if you tune them properly...
Of course, in most case, and especially with people as young as Mr.Sam, impressing the ladies is primordial... Which is why there are hundreds of fully decked out, vinyl covered, riced out, automatic Civics... Then again, not everyone's like that, and you'd be surprised at how many sleepers you can find, if you look closely.
