And that caused it to spin? What's he got, hydraulic brakes?
No, I think what they said was - his front brakes failed, which meant he only had working rear brakes. That meant his brake bias was now effectively 0:100 to the rear, so when he braked, the rear brakes pitched the car sideways and then he was just a passenger.

He's lucky to be alive, as was the Audi driver in the chicane:

I've always wondered about the safety of sports cars and this crash answers my question. They're not safe

This crash is very spectacular looking, but I've seen similiar crashes just as bad or worst where the driver walks away unhurt. I've heard that in this crash he had a compound fracture of his ankle and broke spinal vertebrae...unacceptable for a crash like this where the car had plenty of time to lose energy before hitting the guardrail.

This almost reminds me of Petit Le Mans 1998 with the Porsche 911 GT1, Le Mans 1999 with Mercedes-Benz, and 2000 with the BMW V12 LMR... only this is much worse than any of these flips and crashes. I wish Stephane Ortelli the very best and a speedy recovery. Hope he can get well before Le Mans (if he'll be starting at Le Mans this year). Get well soon, mate!

They're not safe? Guh? How do you know his injuries are from hitting the guard rail, and not from, you know, hitting the dirt quite hard and being whiplashed around?

He could have injured his ankle just from his feet whipping around and hitting the inside of the footwell, and from the reports I've seen, he has no back injuries.

To further correct your statement, Ortelli did only break his ankle, and did not injure his back. He was out of the hospital already on Monday.

Jamie Campbell-Walter on the other hand did injure his back in an accident during qualifying on Saturday when his Creation became briefly airborne and eventually hit a barrier head on. He suffered two hairline fractures of vertebre.

I see nothing however to indicate that these cars are unsafe in comparison with any other top form of motorsport out there.

As far as I can tell LMP's are some of the safest race cars around. When was the last time someone died in a LMP crash anyway?
Now, that crash was massive... It is amazing he got away with so little injury. Goes to show how strong modern LMP's are built 👍

Gordon Bennett! How did that miss the Audi? The car seemed to pirouhette around the Audi's spoiler without contacting it at any point... Massive shunt for a tiny injury...

It's really a testament to the design of these cars to allow for minimal injury or harm. He only broke his ankle, but it could have been much worse if these cars had pathetic safety designs and regulations. I always say that I'm not excited about crashes and that I have no reason TO be excited. However, I always want to know just how safe cars can be "when it all goes wrong." So I sometimes imagine how the driver would feel in an intense crash while racing. Fortunately for Stephane Ortelli, all he suffered was a broken ankle. I hope he's able to recover because he is a very good driver.
