Stockyard?

Since I'm lazy, rather than looking it up, can someone explain the purpose of the "Stockyard"? Any Pros or Cons? Does it cost me money to retrieve cars from the stockyard?

The garage limit is 500 cars, but the stockyard is a place where you can put in even more cars. The number of cars the stockyard can hold is said to be 9,999. The stockyard is free to use. The only disadvantage to the stockyard is that it takes a while to load and save when you open it up.

Also, a while back, people have been saying cars you put in the stockyard tend to disappear, but I have never had that happen to me. It's probably something that affects only the earlier versions of the game.
