Subaru will unveil 2017 Impreza sedan and hatchback at the NY auto show

I'm getting Infiniti Q30 vibes from that teaser shot, minus the LED lighting.

Here we go:

Picture taken from Subaru USA's Facebook page. I do think it looks great, if a bit conservative. It doesn't stray too far from the concept car so that's good.

That interior looks like a massive improvement over the current car. The infotainment system still looks like it could use a lot of improvement, but, if it has Apple Car Play or Android Auto integration... Might not matter that much. Curious to know what they did with the gearbox, here. Not that the CVT was all that well improved, but, at least in my experience, the 5-speed manual was never all that great, either. Subtle improvements there could go a long way, even if the engine itself doesn't change much. Otherwise, its a bread-and-butter car that'll do well for most people.

I think this is the part where we start to wonder how long these reasonably attractive looks take to get on the Legacy/Outback.

Wow, I'm really impressed, here. They've managed to remove a lot of the stodgy bits of the outgoing car and give it a much more (and much appreciated) European flavor. It very well might be the most interesting car in the segment thanks to some pretty significant improvements.

A lower center of gravity and revised suspension systems contribute to the biggest-ever leap in Subaru's performance evolution. The double-wishbone independent rear suspension mounts its rear stabilizer bar directly to the body, which helps reduce body roll by 50 percent compared to the outgoing model.

Better handling across the board is going to be fantastic, a much needed improvement for the non-WRX models going forward. Although, they'd need to get the steering right. Here's hoping they bought a Mazda 3 for some benchmarking. And they're also doing this:

Taking full advantage of the new stiffer platform and more powerful engine, the Impreza 2.0i Sport, now available in the Sedan as well as 5-Door, delivers a more fun-to-drive performance feel thanks to exclusive suspension tuning, 18-inch machine-finish alloy wheels and Active Torque Vectoring.

Knowing Subaru, its probably a proper torque vectoring system, right? Not one of those silly ABS-based systems... Hopefully.

The 2017 Subaru Impreza will be offered in four trim lines: 2.0i base, Premium, Sport and Limited. The 2.0i starts with an extensive roster of standard features that includes a 6.5-inch multimedia touchscreen, Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™, power windows with auto up/down on both driver and passenger sides; 60/40-split fold-down rear seat; power door locks and side mirrors; multi-function display with fuel economy information; tilt and telescoping steering column; security system with engine immobilizer, carpeted floormats and more.

Well, hot damn. They've gone and jumped into the appropriate standard features set, too. So then, the mysteries boil down to two things for me:
  1. Did they fix that damn 5-speed manual?
  2. Hows the steering?
Assuming those points were addressed, man, the new Impreza looks like it is really taking it to the Honda Civic as potentially one of the better options out there.

This is probably the best looking Impreza since the GD. The interior looks to be finally up with the rest of the pack too, and that presents an interesting problem: Knowing what the new Impreza looks like, and if you wanted a WRX, should you get an outgoing one that is based on the now-previous generation Impreza or wait for the next gen WRX?

I don't think the next WRX STI is going to be on sale for at least another 2 years, the current WRX/WRX STI started production 3 years after the 4th-Gen Impreza. Anyone wanting a WRX is better off getting one now.

Best version in my opinion. Would happily purchase this but probably won't come to the UK.

The current Impreza is on sale but only with a normally aspirated 1.6. :indiff:

I think Subaru could be onto a winner if they bring the Impreza Hatchback to the UK with the 1.6 Turbo from the Levorg and pair it with a 6-Speed Manual. Plus, the turbocharged engine means it will come with a hood scoop! :dopey:

I thought it was a Kia Forte for a second. Where's a new WRX STI when you need it?

Wouldn't a coupe mess with BRZ sales?
Not really if there's differences performance wise. It seems that the BRZ remains as NA screamer, and Impreza will keep getting turbo goodies.. So it would be similar to Cayman/911 relationship.

At a glance, it looks almost the same as my WRX. I'm sure there's difference but I would think all new would be, well, all new.

I think the new Impreza Sport hatchback was designed to be viewed from this angle, looks much classier than its predecessor.

I very rarely log in to my account, but I feel the need to ask why you guys are all praising this car? It's so bland looking. It's a little improvement over the last, but it doesn't really seem all that special design-wise.

Personally I think the current Impreza is disappointing in the looks department, but the new model takes cues from the WRX STI which has made the front look a lot better. It's not the first car I would go for in this class, but it is moving up the ranks.

If you still picture the Impreza as a rally-bred Saloon/Wagon, then yes, it is dull in that respect. Think of it now as a conventional hatchback/saloon with four wheel drive and it can hold its ground against the competition.
