Got V8 Superstars this weekend. I only did a couple of laps at Portimao and Monza so not much to say right now. However, I'll say this:

a) Overall ... I'm liking it;

b) Pity we can't change the FFB settings (G25) I would like it stronger;

c) Monza is too narrow;

d) Nice to have tyre wear and physical damage;

It's probably my destiny to like underdog games :dopey: but I think I'll have a lot of fun with this one :D

To be continued ...

I am back on the prowl for LAN racing games. I love F1 in LAN mode but am looking for more. In most cases I won't have internet access so offkine LAN is preferred.

GTI Club?
Supercar Challenge?
Motorstorm 2?
Dirt2?

does anyone know?

Matt

sorry for the horrendous bump, but i must disagree. i'm off work for the week, and i've been delving deeper into V8 Superstars

imo its very good 👍

After another couple of hours with this game, I must agree with this. V8 SS strikes you as a bit odd in the beginning, and it's surely not a game for people that are put off by the lack of cockpit view.

But, I'm not the kind of guy that plays only one game, I like to try several and keep my options open. However, as we all know, when we spend too much time playing the same game, when we start playing another the things we notice most (at first) are the ones we don't like. So, it's always good to keep at it, giving every new game a fair chance of being appreciated for what it offers, not where it lacks.

I did all challenges last night, they are too easy and that's a shame, many hours of play could be spent there and, instead, it's much too easy to win them all at platinum level.

After completing those, I felt that the AI should be easy also so I went straight to the Championship, setting the AI on Legendary.

Got my 🤬 kicked as soon as I realized I was SECONDS off the pace ... in free practise 1 :dopey:

The more I play and drive, I get used to the oddities of the game and I start to understand the complexities of the physics provided.

And having tyre wear and mechanical damage takes the racing experience to a completely different level. You must take good care of the car and the way you drive it. And that really changes the way you race.

Indeed, and like RacerPaul said, very good. 👍

Just started on this. Not enjoying it too much but I've started it now and I will finish it. There is absolutely no sense of when a car is going to understeer or when it grips. When the rear does break loose, it just looks and feels completely wrong.

I did all the licence tests and figured if I can platinum all those without any problems I should get through a championship no problem. I can't even qualify first on easy let alone the 10 seconds behind I am on legend. I expected some kind of continuity in the difficulty.

Then there is the issue with using the G25. An absolutely enormous dead spot in the middle. The dead spot in scc was nothing in comparison.

Anyhow that's all for now. Will go practice some more.

Doubt it helps I just started this after previously playing scc.

J-Pap, I am currently doing the full championship in simulation settings and with AI set on "Hard". Chose the Jag, because it's beautiful and because I want to chase the better guys (Audis and M5s) , not replace one of them. I'm doing it with real duration and I have been using almost the entire length of the free practise sessions and the quali session (that amounts to 90 minutes of testing for each race) to find my setups and to learn the tracks properly. Then I have races with circa 13 laps just to be sure any cock up by me isn't recoverable. And ... I'm having a blast with this game.

You say you are 10 seconds behind in Legend mode. Was nearly the same with me, and initially I was maybe 4 seconds off the pace in Hard. However, when you start to go after those few seconds, you get to understand how the physics aren't that wrong, in fact they are quite good.

I think both understeer and oversteer are well recreated and come as a natural consequence to your own actions as a driver. Maybe the game is a bit "too forgiving" (compared to FC/SCC that's noticeable) but other than that, very good.

About the Force Feedback (I also use a G25). At the beggining I felt it to be closer to GT than to FC/SCC (more smooth, no "kicks" and low FFB), but with the deadzone. So, the worse of both worlds.

However, with time and pushing the limits of the driving I found out that one of the aspects I most enjoyed in FC was also present here (although wth a lot less strengh). The wheel becomes lighter when we understeer/loose traction, and when you get that and know what it means, your driving will improve immensely.

Because (and that's the main problem with this game), the feedback (both from the wheel and also from the sound) you get is always too subtle, and that, I guess, makes us at the start feel that the cars are unpredictable and/or irrealistic.

I'm not saying you are wrong, but this is how I feel this game to be. :)

I had another stab at the game last night. Reset all settings and tried again. The car simply doesn't feel right to me with tyre wear on so I've turned it off and that has made a world a difference to my laptimes. Ie. from 2 seconds off pace on easy I am now 4-5 seconds ahead a lap. Since I reset the settings the dead spot for some unknown reason is reduced but it is still there (probably about 3-4 degrees now). I guess both those changes above contributed to the massive leap in lap times.

Still can't feel the wheel getting lighter during under/oversteer but a result of turning off tyre wear has reduced under/oversteer anyway.

I guess practice makes perfect. So will just practice some more and then try turn on tyre wear again.

edit: it is frustrating having to constantly restart the game and unplug and plug in the g25 because the buttons at random will stop working or the force feedback stops working.

I never tried to take the tyre wear off, so I don't know what other effects it will have.

I am still doing my Championship with the Jaguar, AI on hard setting and I'm glad to report I have won every race so far (had to restart it at Misano though :D ) and have reached pole in all races except Misano (again :D ) because stupid Morbidelli stole it from me by one hundreth of a second one minute before the end of the session (that's what you get for being condescendent and think you have the pole bagged already).

I'm facing now the last championship race, and it's my home race at Portimao. Funny I saw those cars racing exactly there this year (supporting race for the ELMS race) and I'm pretty confident I'll win it also (and get pole).

I think the real settings of the offline mode in this game make it truly great, you feel you are actually racing a real life series.

My usual routine (in a 1 event per night mode) is:

Free Practise 1 (30 minutes) - I load the quali preset tuning the team offers me and go for it with soft tyres, with the purposes of: a) learn the track overall layout and check the optimal braking points; b) understand what gears are too short/too long for what I need with my kind of driving; c) fine tune the car; d) check the AI pace.

I usually find myself, at the beggining, 2 to 3 seconds off the pace. Then I work on car setup and try to make my driving more precise. Usually I end Free Practise 1 with a good car for quali and topping the time sheets. I save the car setup at the end.

Free Practise 2 (30 minutes) - In this one I fit the car with the harder tyres, and try to establish (again) braking markers and if the gears need some tweaking for "race" condition. Don't care much about the time sheet since the AI cars seem to be - again - in quali mode. When I'm comfortable I consider my work done and press the "advance time" button. I also save this new setting.

Quali (30 minutes) - I load the Free 1 setup, go for it and when I reach P1 I advance time (5 minutes each time you press the button) one click, check the time sheets, another click ... etc. until the session ends. Only had to "go out" again twice.

Race (real duration, somewehere close to 15 laps) - I load the Free 2 setup and do it.

Of course this can change if weather changes (and it does, very often). At Misano both the practise sessions and quali were on a dry track and when the race screen shows up it's a wet race :dopey: so I had a bit of a problem there.

About car setup, I guess to each is own, but I usually like to have the brakes heavily on the front of the car (7 or 8), although this can be a problem in tracks where you have to brake while cornering (Valencia's last corner is a good example). However, when tyres start to degrade, at least you don't get afraid of braking because the rear tyres won't lock so easily.

Also, I usually put the downforce (only rear) close to maximum value. Again, I want the rear to be steady, it'll be my job to compensate the understeering.

I rarely tweak suspensions, accepting what the team suggests, but if I do, usually is to make the front a litle softer. Not sure if the outcome is the desired one, but I feel more comfortable that way.

Overall, this game has been both a surprise and a very pleasant experience.

Oh, and about buttons and FFB being lost. I never experienced buttons (but you must start using the game with the buttons on your shifter, it only recongnizes ONE controller, the one you used first), but losing the FFB happens often. Only solution, as you say, is to unplug-plug again the wheel to the PS3.

I'm on the oportunity of importing a few games from UK at very low prices (new games, sealed I mean). English language isn't a barrier for me so I think I'll get a few titles, I'm interested on Mirror's Edge at 9€, maybe also Supercar Challenge at 17€ (even if I've Ferrari Challenge already but I've beated it and I loved it) or maybe the ultimate box of Burnout Paradise as my 1st race-arcade. Don't know if at those prices they are insteresting for you, but for me they are because in Spain they are a little more expensive (Supercar Challenge at 39.90€ for example).

BUT I've seen to Superstars V8 Racing at 11€ and I though heyyy I remember a few of my mates from GTPlanet talking about this title, for 11€ it would be a nice purchase even if the game isn't as good as Ferrari Challenge.

The problem is that I've seen a few (short) videos and seems it has more loading screens that a bad Playstation port in the 90s era, and I've heard it doesn't come with internal view too. What do you think about it for 11€?

You know I just don't want to have a bad game in my collection. I've seen you mates (J-PAP, Hun) posting here recently... to be honest it's more my time than the 11€, I mean that even for 11€ I wouldn't get GRID or NFS Shift. I simply don't want to spend my time on a game that won't a decent level of quality. I don't like the arcades (I think burnout would be the only one I would bought along my GTI Club+ Cote D'Azur). Any idea of if this games deserves not 11€ but the time to be played as for example Ferrari Challenge did because of its quality?, or you suggest me to invest all the time on Supercar Challenge instead?

Hi Aero. Between SCC and V8 Superstars there's no possible doubt, SCC is on another level (best racing game available for the PS3 at the moment, in my view). Go for it. 👍

Thanks mate. Yeah at first I wasn't going to pay 39.90€ when I already had Ferrari Challenge but when I saw it at 17€ I knew I had to buy it, so I'll do it.

And even buying Supercar Challenge, would you add 11€ more for Superstars V8 Racing or it's much like GRID and you think it'll be more like a lose of time? (which errors do you see on that game apart from the massive number of loading screens and the lack of internal view?)

I would. I enjoyed that game very much, it has great tracks you don't find anywhere else (Kyalami, Portimao and a few less-known italian tracks), it has tyre-wear (adds a new dimension to the way you do your races) and it has great AI.

But, as you can see from the posts above (by J-Pap) there are very different opinions about V8 SS.

I read somewhere but can't remember where, that Milestone is working on a new version of Superstars V8 racing and will be released somewhere in 2010.
I'm sure that they have addressed some of the issues.

I hope they kept the graphics engine because for me personal, it looks gorgeous. (EDIT: I have the pc version).

If/when I find that info again, I'll post a link.

I believe they are also working on a WRC game?

EDIT: the sequel is called: Superstars Next Challenge

Rally Italian Style, WRC: Interview with Milestone's Simone Bechini
NextGame: "During the second edition of IVDC (Italian Videogame Developers Conference) we had the chance to interview Simone Bechini, Deputy General Manager at Milestone. The Italian developers studio, along with the producer Black Bean Games, recently announced the new official videogame of WRC, currently in its first steps of development
and due to hit the shelves in 2010.

The street date is still far away, and at the IVDC Milestone showed just a sneak preview of the game in the form of a trailer, but nonetheless our chat with Simone Bechini was absolutely interesting and enjoyable."

I can't say for sure because I only own SSV8 out of the two (I do have FC though), but I think that between those two games it matters greatly if you are going to do online or offline racing. By the feeling that I have, SCC is superior in online and SSV8 with it's full length season, practices, qualifys and better AI is then again better in offline racing.

Fair enough vompatti, offline V8SS is very good, especially because of the AI.

@ kikie: interesting news about the WRC franchise going to Milestone (which means Gran Turismo's license is not exclusive)

Meanwhile, there's a thread about the next V8 Superstars in the main Console & PC Gaming forum and since this is a multiplatform title maybe we should discuss it there? I already posted in that thread the press release and a screenshot of that new game.

I ordered this game the other day, since i heard the AI is ok so the single player should be good. And they are selling it nowdays for allmost free.

How about online? Is anybody there? I'm afraid not? But if you have few buddys to race with, then are you able to create private games? So you could play it nicely and whoknows maybe it would be even fun?

Is this a fair game for Wheel, i was kind of dissapointed when i realised that SCC has so much some sort of handycap for controller....that you can never compete your pad times. It's not fun to play it online because of this i think. 👎

Well, for that price i think Superstars will be a good pick even because of offline. But it would be a nice suprise if the online was ok?

hi :) its been a while since i played SV8, but from what i remember the online was free from any major problems

hey, when your game arrives add me as a friend on psn and we can have some laps 👍

Ok, sounds good. The guys on the Finnish forums also told there is a change to put AI cars in online races? That sound promising especially if there are only few ppl playing. I'll add you after i receive the game within week or two. There are also couple of guys in Finnish forums i can ask to join.

Count me in. I am totally rusty with this game but did a few free-practise laps yesterday (championship at legend) and after I got totally owned by the AI it started to to "settle in" ...

PS - And yes, you can mix AIs in online races, to fill the grid. Sadly, you can't make the lobbies private and you can't kick out any moron that gets in your own lobies ...

According to Sony's Twitter, Superstars V8 Racing is coming exclusively to PSN on Tuesday and it will feature full platinum trophy support.
