Caroll Shelby is an American. He's from Texas, not the UK. While he was certainly not the only person working on the GT40, the car itself is considered to be a creation of Mr. Shelby.

Henry Ford, Jr. had the idea of winning Le Mans by putting an American Indy 500 engine in a European race car. To that end, the first thing Ford did was simply buy two Lola GT cars and stick Ford V8's in them. Then they decided to make the GT40.

The GT40 Mk1 was made in Slough, England, but that's the only thing you're right about. Ford Advanced Vehicles in Slough was created by Ford in 1963 for the sole purpose of developing the GT40, but things weren't going well, so the company was sold in 1966 when Ford decided to have Caroll Shelby and Kar Kraft build the GT40 Mk2 in Detroit.

In the 1966 Le Mans, both the UK GT40 Mk1's and the American GT40 Mk2's ran. Even though the UK models had been in development for 2 years longer, they all failed to finish the race. The American Mk2's placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

When people talk about the GT40 (and when you race the GT40 in GT3), it's the American GT40 Mk2, not the UK one. The American Mk2's were the ones that won Le Mans, Daytona, Sebring, Nurenburg, and every other race that GT40's won.

Even if you had been correct, what reason do you have to get so fussy about it?
 
I should add, though, that the original Lola (whose body style the GT40 was based on) was designed by Eric Broadley, who was from the UK. Although, unfortunately, a team of Brits turned the GT40 into a massive failure and it had to be completely redesigned by Shelby's team. Everything was changed -- the body, engine, transmission, aerodynamics, wheels, brakes, cooling... everything.

The original British GT40 was a car that lost every race. The transmission never lasted more than 6 hours, but the sad part is that something else usually took the car out before the transmission went. When Shelby rebuilt it, it won every race, and really isn't the same car at all -- it didn't even look that much like the Lola anymore. It's Shelby's GT40 that won races, and that's why people say that Shelby made the GT40.

despite that, its still a British car at heart...you cant change history....look into the 1963 development of the GT40...erm, Slough in England, for the benefit of americans, happens to be in the UK

this is quite funny to read. my 2 cents worth i would love to own a gt40 it is one of the best cars ford has made. xy gtho phase 3 shelby gt 500 (elanor) are some other good fords. but most of the rest are ****
 
you can buy a kit to make your own replica GT40....costs about 20 grand and looks smart as fcuk...
